If you're gearing up for trivia night at your local dive, the first action movie ever made was released in 1903, titled The Great Train Robbery. The silent film ran for 12 minutes and follows two bandits who rob a train, naturally. Fast forward to the 1970s, and action films became hugely popular thanks to a global loosening of the reins on content restrictions censoring language and violence. The birth of modern action cinema is thanks, in part, to Clint Eastwood with Westerns, Bruce Lee with martial arts flicks, and Chuck Norris with perhaps the original meme. Fast forward even further to 2022, and streaming platforms (of which there are endless) are teeming with action flicks that cross genres, feature big names, and launch cult followings. The common denominator? Let's be honest, it's weapons!

If you’ve already rewatched Pam and Tommy twice through, then give Barb Wire a try. One of Pam Anderson’s most iconic turns, this movie has gained a cult following since its 1996 release, so join the party.

This action-comedy stars Danny McBride and Nick Swardson as a pair of criminals who kidnap a pizza delivery guy (Jesse Eisenberg) and his friend (Aziz Ansari) and force them to rob a bank.

Behind Enemy Lines

Owen Wilson in an action movie–yes, you’re hearing that right. Behind Enemy Lines follows a naval officer shot down over Bosnia amid the Bosnian War. The plot is loosely based on a real story from the '90s, so the most shocking thing on screen won’t be Wilson’s voice (this time).

The Bounty Hunter

This 2010 rom com stars Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler as a pair of exes–one a bounty hunter, and the other a bail skipper. Hijinks ensue as Milo (Gerard) hunts down his ex-wife (Jennifer) after she's accused of assaulting a police officer.

Glory

This war drama from 1989 stars Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick, and it tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, one of the earliest African-American Union regiments in the Civil War. Glory ran the awards circuit in its year, taking home multiple Oscars, BAFTAs, Grammys, and a Golden Globe.

High Life

We’ll call this one a soft action. High Life is a 2018 film from A24 and director Claire Denis which follows a group of criminals sent to space to explore a black hole. The film stars Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, and Mia Goth, and it was a hit with indie lovers. If an A24 fan and a Michael Bay fan walk into a bar for movie night, they choose High Life.

This science-fiction thriller from 2012 was written by Rian Johnson, the same guy behind Knives Out. It stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Emily Blunt and follows a group of time traveling contract killers ordered to hunt down victims from the past.

Who does action better than Mark Wahlberg? Contraband follows a former smuggler working to protect his brother-in-law from a drug lord. The movie also stars Kate Beckinsale and Giovanni Ribisi, so it's a pretty stacked cast.

If you still can’t stop thinking about Everything Everywhere All At Once, then give Swiss Army Man a try. Coming from the same creative duo (the Daniels), the movie stars Daniel Radcliffe and Paul Dano and follows a man who finds a dead body while stranded on a desert island.

The 6th Day is an Arnold Schwarzenegger flick from 2000 in which Arnie meets Arnie...or rather, a man meets a clone of himself and unravels a government conspiracy involving clones taking over the world.

A modern action twist on Greek mythology, Poseidon follows a group of passengers on a luxury cruise ship facing a tsunami-level wave which causes the ship to sink. The movie stars Richard Dreyfuss, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Josh Lucas.

Did we say stacked cast before? Well this one is *super* stacked. The Expendables stars Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, and Randy Couture. The story follows a group of mercenaries tasked with overthrowing a Latin-American dictator controlled by an ex-CIA agent.
