Was I ready to give up on Michaelides yet?
When I started reading some of my Goodreads friends mixed reviews, I became concerned. I rearranged my question from ‘was I ready to give up on Michaelides yet’ to, should I even bother to read this one?
Well, I decided to read it, especially when a friend donated the book to my Little Free Library Shed.
What was I in for?
The narrator, Elliot Chase, lets readers know right away that “this is a tale of murder.” But he is also clear in his telling of this story, that he is an unreliable narrator. So, there are lots of moments in which readers are left to wonder, did this really happen as he is describing?
Still, so much of the plot seemed like a movie I had already seen or a book I have already read. How many times have we been told this story?
And unfortunately, how could readers become invested in it with such a floppy plot, and unbelievable, one-dimensional characters?
It didn’t take long for me to stop wondering who was going to be murdered or why. I just didn’t care any longer. As far as I was concerned, murder the lot of them! No one was particularly likable!
Lastly, ‘the fury’ refers to a malign Aegean wind. But, by the end of this soppy mess, I think the real fury was me, angry I had wasted my time.
Maybe you will feel differently.

Fantastic review, Karen. I gave this one a generous 3 stars. This book, to me, felt like the last few seasons of the TV show "Lost". The book, just like the TV show, is too heavy on backstories and takes you out of the present atmosphere on the island, which was supposed to be what the book is about!

I wanted the island, but, instead we got this....I think this is the last book I am going to read of this author! The disappointment has been overwhelming. 🥹

Oh no!! So sorry you didn’t enjoy this one. I actually liked this one (a bit more than you), but that’s okay because we can’t win them all!! This review says it all!! I was extremely disappointed with this one, given the previous two were so amazingly written. Haha I was angry too by the time I finished it. Honestly, this book was a complete mess and sucked.

I gave this 2 stars as well. Gave up caring due to the unlikeable characters too!

Nothing is as good as The Silent Patient. I did think it was better than The Maidens. Great review Karen

😂 your comment about your fury is clever 🤣 I absolutely LOVED this book but really enjoyed reading your review. I also have nothing else to compare his work. I haven’t read his other novels. I have The Silent Patient on deck.

I liked it, but I also liked the Maidens. I can definitely see why those who loved The Silent Patient were disappointed that his subsequent books weren't at all similar.
