Was it the embedded gang that didn't want it? There was a separate argument as well - "it's difficult to build boost" - I don't accept that. We're catering for serious developers here! And besides, it's not difficult. Can it go on a -D? Surely if it's easy to disable or enable then the only issue to discuss is whether it's a useful feature.
