It had me at the beginning and the last half hour or more is superb, but Phillips earnest, deliberate efforts to tie it into the DC Comics universe and heavy-handed stab at making it germane to socioeconomic issues hurt my suspension of disbelief.

Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, is the worst kind of bad film. It’s a technically proficient and gorgeously presented falsehood. One that rejects responsibility as it strives to understand and empathize with the stereotypical white mass murderer.

The modern Taxi Driver. This movie could have only been made, with an A list actor, by loosely being glued together by superhero lore. This is a film with a lot to say about the current state of the world in terms of mental health and social engineering. Phillips is kind of a genius, not necessarily in terms or writing or directing, but for selling a genuine movie underneath the guise of another lame pop shtick blockbuster that would otherwise never be made.

As a psychotherapist and a person with mental illness, I can say subjectively, that anyone who's suffered mental health issues will understand the depth of this movie. It's slowly paced, but it is a brilliant take on severe mental illness and how society treats those who are mentally ill as "outcasts". To those who have an empathetic nature, has gone through mental illness (and is aware of their illness, aka not in denial), Joker will resonate with you as it depicts a character who you may see in yourself.
