Critics Consensus

Joker gives its infamous central character a chillingly plausible origin story that serves as a brilliant showcase for its star -- and a dark evolution for comics-inspired cinema.

Lawrence Ware New York Times What the film wants to say — about mental illness or class divisions in society — is not as interesting as what it accidentally says about whiteness. Rated: B Oct 13, 2023 Full Review Ben Sachs Chicago Reader Joaquin Phoenix, in another outstanding performance. Mar 9, 2020 Full Review J. Hoberman Tablet Not only an intelligent throwback to the feel-bad shock cinema of the 1970s, Joker is all but unique in its social realism... Feb 6, 2020 Full Review Eddie Harrison film-authority.com …over two films, Joker looks rather different from the edgy-origin story this was taken to be on initial release. ..the second film amplified the messaging but that corrosive message about the dangeous direction society was heading was here all along... Rated: 4/5 Oct 12, 2024 Full Review Sarah Vincent Sarah G Vincent Views It had me at the beginning and the last half hour or more is superb, but Phillips earnest, deliberate efforts to tie it into the DC Comics universe and heavy-handed stab at making it germane to socioeconomic issues hurt my suspension of disbelief. Oct 4, 2024 Full Review Joonatan Itkonen Toisto.net Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, is the worst kind of bad film. It’s a technically proficient and gorgeously presented falsehood. One that rejects responsibility as it strives to understand and empathize with the stereotypical white mass murderer. Rated: 1/5 Jul 5, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Miguel T Amazing movie! You must watch this movie. Joaquin Phoenix's acting is great. The time flies by, and by the end of the movie, you end up wanting more. I recommend it to friends and they love it too Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/07/24 Full Review Amanda T Loved this movie! Jaquan Phoenix was seller as the clown Joker. Watched it a few times just wonderful Rated 5 out of 5 stars 10/04/24 Full Review Nick R Joaquin is fantastic and the movie has on the edge of your seat with what he's going to do next, even it it overshadows the deeper themes going on. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/20/24 Full Review wraiii t The modern Taxi Driver. This movie could have only been made, with an A list actor, by loosely being glued together by superhero lore. This is a film with a lot to say about the current state of the world in terms of mental health and social engineering. Phillips is kind of a genius, not necessarily in terms or writing or directing, but for selling a genuine movie underneath the guise of another lame pop shtick blockbuster that would otherwise never be made. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/15/24 Full Review Irene P As a psychotherapist and a person with mental illness, I can say subjectively, that anyone who's suffered mental health issues will understand the depth of this movie. It's slowly paced, but it is a brilliant take on severe mental illness and how society treats those who are mentally ill as "outcasts". To those who have an empathetic nature, has gone through mental illness (and is aware of their illness, aka not in denial), Joker will resonate with you as it depicts a character who you may see in yourself. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/12/24 Full Review Rich B Loved it ! A must see. Has a Taxi Driver vibe at times . Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
