November has proven to be another busy month at Queensbury Elementary school. An important event of the month was our Remembrance Day. The Remembrance Day assembly was a well prepared, reflective presentation with several classes performing or providing visual images and words on the significance of Remembrance Day. We had a number of parents in attendance along with Christie Sacre, our school trustee representative, and Mr. Meindl, a veteran from the Second World War. We can all be proud of our students for their respectful listening and participation in the event. Your child will have received their first term report card yesterday. The report cards will highlight the achievements of your child in the first term and provide indicators of areas of focus for the next few months. Please take the time to review the reports and share the information with your child. Queensbury School will be having 2:00 pm early dismissal on December 3rd, 4th, and 5th to accommodate the parent-teacher conferences The excitement in the school has turned towards several upcoming events. We are looking forward to the band concert on Tuesday, December 4th, at 7:00 pm. Both Junior and Senior band, under the guidance of Mr. Toren, will have the opportunity to perform for all. Please also mark December 19 th on your calendar as we will be having a matinee and evening Christmas concert performance. Ticket order forms were included in the report card envelopes sent home yesterday. Due to fire regulations, strict seating limits dictate that we can only guarantee two tickets per family. Please be sure to get your orders in as soon as possible! We are now in the final stages of making a decision regarding our new playground structures. The committee was able to review 18 different designs from three different suppliers and narrow the choices down to four models. The staff and students have spent the past week looking over the plans and providing feedback to the committee. The final plans will be unveiled within the next week with completion of installation by the end of March! Mr. Chan Principal
Combating Lice We have been experiencing a reoccurring issue of lice in several classes this fall. While the lice do not pose a health issue, it is problematic when we are not able to deal with them effectively. To help out, please be sure to check your child on a regular basis and treat any cases that occur. Remind your child to not share hats, combs, or clothing items which may assist in the transfer from one person to another. Finally, another helpful trick is to have your child place their jacket in their backpacks at school each morning so as to not have items coming into contact in the cloakroom.
Winter weather is here! Please take some time to review the following to help
prepare for whats ahead!
Parents are encouraged to establish an emergency plan for their children in the event that schools are closed, start late, or dismiss early. Please prepare for inclement weather by dressing children appropriately. Stay a safe distance from the roadway. Parents/guardians are responsible for their childrens safe travel to school. If for any reason, there is concern that a child cannot travel safely, other arrangements should be made. Students will not be penalized for missing school; student safety is the first priority of the District. Please check out the North Vancouver Website for further information. www.nvsd44.bc.ca For the comfort of your child we suggest that a change of clothes and a pair of inside shoes be left at school.
Harvest Project
As you know, Queensbury collects non-perishable food items year-round for the Harvest Project, a local charitable organization. The Harvest Project believes in giving and hand upnot a hand out. Although we designate a specific class each week, donations from all students are always welcome. At this time of year it is especially important to make sure that all in our community have access to food and warm clothing. This is an excellent forum to discuss social responsibility with your children. Please Note: We will be asking for donations of non-perishable food items at our Christmas Concert taking place December 19.
Lost & Found Items Take a look while youre here for Parent/Teacher Meetings!
Lost & Found articles are located in the lower hallway at the bottom of the stairs. When you are in the school, please stop by or send your child to look for misplaced clothing. All items not picked up by December 17 will be donated. Please remember to tag clothing with your childs name.
Sick kids? ...... Please call us and let us know the details!
Cold and flu season is upon us. When calling to report your childs absence due to illness, please indicate what symptoms your child is showing. Vancouver Coastal Health is requesting schools to track and report increased school absenteeism due to illness. This will also allow our custodial staff to do a thorough cleansing in classrooms affected by a higher number of absences.
NVSD Artists for Kids offers a wide range of art programs after school. Spirit of Christmas
Queensbury students have been busily preparing for the Christmas Performances scheduled for Wednesday, December 19th. We will be having a matinee performance at 1:45 pm and an evening performance at 7:00 pm. We encourage parents who are able to make the matinee performance to attend in the daytime to help even out the demand for tickets. Due to the limited seating we are only able to guarantee 2 tickets per family. Families may request additional tickets (maximum 2), but the request will only be honoured if we have unused tickets. These additional tickets will be distributed through a random draw. Every family will be eligible for their 2 tickets, provided they return this form to the school between 8:30am Monday, Dec. 3rd and 3pm Friday, December 7th. Please return all orders directly to the school office. Tickets will be sent home (stapled to a copy of the original order) on Tuesday, December 11th. If available, additional tickets will be distributed Thursday, December 13 th.
We will be collecting non-perishable food donations for the Harvest Project at the door.
Any donation will be most welcome!
