The battle of Trenton

The Colonist, and general George Washington were chased out of New York and into New Jersey, to make things even worse the Continental army had less then 6,000 men left at their side. The troops for the continental army were starting to lose hope, and George Washington had to inspire them to fight, or they might not ever gain their freedom. Well General George washington had found a way to inspire his troops, but if his plan had failed he might have discouraged himself to. Some of the british troops were camped out in Trenton New jersey, if he could defeat them he might inspire the rest of his troops to fight. Well George Washington did capture and defeat that group of troops but there were still many redcoats that needed to be defeated, before the colonist got their well earned freedom. The battle took place on December 25 and December 26 1776, in Trenton New Jersey. After the hessians had finished their big Christmas celebration they were exhausted, so when the continental army made their surprise Attack on the hessians, they won in less than two hours.Though the morale at the beginning of this battle was low for the continental army, After General George Washington inspired his troops the morale was high in the continental army. If this battle had not happened then we might still be ruled by the British today.

The Battle of Saratoga

The over all British plan was to move General William Howe to New York and up the Hudson river. But General Howe didnt receive the message so he remained where he already was, which ruined the British plan. Well this affected this battle because instead of there being two armies to fight in Saratoga, there was only one. This made the win easier for the continental army. General Howe was a general fighting for the British army, his role in this army was to listen for messages from the other generals, and to patrol the british and patriot armies. Another one of the British generals was general Burgoyne his role in the British army was to keep the british moving and targeted, he also was incharge of sending the message to General Howe to go to New York and up the Hudson river. The battle of Saratoga took place in 1777 after the battles of Trenton and Princeton. The battle of Saratoga was a significant battle of the revolution because the continental army was one step closer to their freedom.

It was now winter and the British army had found the perfect place for a new head quarters. It was right between the British troops in New York and the ones in Philadelphia, this prime location was in a place called Valley Forge, which was in Pennsylvania. When the continental army heard of this it did not make them happy. Of corse the patriots wanted that land back so they set out for Valley Forge. The camp was dreadful, it was freezing cold and the colonist were going into starvation. Well there was a man named Baron Von Steuben and he joined the continental army at its greatest time of need. He believed in what was stated in the declaration of Independence. George Washington was a general in the continental army. He was respectful of his troops and refused to move into better shelter than a tent until all of his troops were housed. This battle took place in Valley Forge, in the year of 1777. This battle was significant for the continental army because they took away the prime headquarters for the British army.

the Battle of Yorktown

The battle of Yorktown began on September 28 1781. It was very important that the continental army won this battle because it was the battle that decided the outcome of the American Revolution. There were 3 key factors that gave the continental army a very good chance at winning. The first one was that now the Americans were teamed up with the French, and together their army was 16,000 men. the second was that the British now had a small army of only 7,500 men. And the third was that the British entrenchments were strong enough to withstand attack, but could not weather a lengthy siege. the role of General Washington was to look after his troops and too lead his army to victory in the end. There was a man called General CornWallis and his role in the continental army was to go to port city and to build fortifacations for defense. and to wait for more help.

President George Washington

After the Americans finally gained their freedom, George Washington became the very first president of the United States. At first Congress tried to govern them through their charter, given to them in 1781. but that would give them power over them. After that most power was given to individual states and their independent laws. But their was to much chaos so they thought of a higher form of goverment. after lots of arguments they met in Philadelphia and came up with 3 branchs of goverment, executive, legislative, and judicial. After a new constitution was made the electoral college had the unanimous vote of the first president of the United States of America... George Washington. On april 30, George Washington was sworn in as president.
