Curriculum News
You may be aware that all catholic schools in the Archdiocese follow the new RE Guidelines for the teaching of Religion. Jane, our APRE, oversees the planning of the RE program with the teachers. This great resource was developed by the RE team of Brisbane Catholic Education and can be accessed through the website. The Australian Curriculum documents for all other areas of the curriculum can be accessed through the ACARA website. There you will see the framework that each of our teachers work with. Jane Marrison, as well as being our APRE also is the Curriculum Support Teacher at St. Augustines. This year the teachers are spending time in twilight meetings looking at English as well as Geography. We are currently working with ACARA documents in English, Mathematics, History and Science. Geography is being introduced this year.
P&F AGM
We remind all parents that the Annual General Meeting is on Tuesday night from 6:30pm in the staff room. Amendments to the Constitution will be discussed along with the election of the Executive for 2014. A P&F levy is also on the agenda for discussion, along with P&F dates for the year. You are encouraged to attend.
Lent begins next week (5 March) commencing with Ash Wednesday. It begins with an Ash Wednesday Liturgy being held in The Mary MacKillop Centre at 11:30am. Fr John will be presiding. All are welcome to join us. Prior to Lent, children from all classes will have some quiet time to reflect, write or draw a Lenten Promise. We encourage you to speak about this ancient tradition with your family. Lent is a forty day period of repentance, reflection and prayer, a time to think about our lives and how we based them on the teachings of Jesus. Sometimes we find that Lent has gone by and we really havent prepared spiritually for Easter at all. This year again, there is an opportunity to join in a reflection/ discussion group gathering weekly in the parish. If you would like to join please ring the parish office and you will be notified of meeting times which are planned to happen in family homes this year. The annual Project Compassion appeal will also commence and several activities will be organised by our new Mini Vinnies group to help raise money for this special Catholic charity. The first fundraiser is the Pancake Tuesday Brekkie. The children (and families) will be able to purchase pancakes from 8am onwards next Tuesday morning from the Tuckshop. The cost is 50c with toppings of jam, butter or the traditional lemon juice and a little sugar. All proceeds will begin the tally for Project Compassion this year. Shrove Tuesday or Fat Tuesday as it was once known was the day when in early times, everything in the house that was considered indulgent was eaten up so that there would be no temptation during the 40 days of Lent. Times have indeed changed with
butter, eggs and sugar no longer being indulgent foods. Maybe, as a family, you could name an indulgent food that you could do without during Lent this year.
Dont seal envelopes inside each other. You can pay for all children in one envelope however, each
child needs to have their own envelope on photo day. Please indicate on the childs envelope that contains all sibling payments, the names of the children you are paying for. Family envelopes are available at the school office upon request. Please enclose correct money as no change is given. Cash, cheques, money orders or credit cards are accepted. For any enquiries, please feel free to contact us. e: sally.kavanagh@msp.com.au p 07 5520 2999 f 07 5520 2900

Our St A's Ukulele group has started again for 2014. We practice and learn on Tuesday at morning tea. We have some school Ukuleles available to borrow - it is free to attend classes and to borrow a Ukulele - or you may bring your own instrument. The class is run by Mr Pizzol and Mrs Pullen. It is open to grade 3 and above. You will need to see either Mr Pizzol or Mrs Pullen, and bring a display folder with you to store music. We look forward to seeing this group grow and seeing interested children next Tuesday at morning tea. Mrs Pullen and Mr Pizzol. Deirdre Pullen (Music Teacher)
Blue Slings
At St As we take first aid very seriously. Staff are fully qualified and training is updated an nually. We have two blue material slings that we use when necessary and BOTH of these have been taken home with needy students. They are clearing marked with St As and use Velcro to adjust to the correct individual height. If one of these has been used by your child and is unintentionally found in your home we would appreciate it being returned to school please. Thank you.
Spanish Lessons
Las classes de espaol han empezado con mucho entusiasmo! The Spanish lessons have started with a lot of enthusiasm! Our first class took place on Tuesday 18 February and we had so much fun that we didnt even notice the time going by In our first week we concentrated on learning about gender nouns and colours, which provided for a lot of fun games and colourful homework. Its not too late to join us, as each new lesson builds upon the previous one. Next week well be revising the colours and learning numbers - All Welcome! Please remember to pack a snack for our 10-15 minutes break. The children get to move around, dance to Spanish songs and eat something. Several adults have contacted me asking about the possibility of an Adult Class, which I think would be a terrific idea! Before I can commit to organising a class I need to know which day and what time would be most suitable. Therefore, I would appreciate if those interested in joining an (info@languageleaders.com.au) to let me know their preference please. Hasta la prxima vez Until next time! District Swimming Carnival
Well done to the 22 students aged 10-12 years who represented St As at the District South Carnival held at Somerset College Pool last Tuesday 18 February. Our students did very well up against exceptional competition. Congratulations to Ellena P, Damien S and Noah C who have progressed through to the Regional Carnival on the 3 and 5 March, at Pizzey Park Pool, Miami. Their performances were simply outstanding!
Winter Sport
Over the next few weeks, students in Years 5-7 will be nominating and trialing in either Rugby League, Soccer or Netball. This process will be fun, yet difficult, as some students are so keen to make a particular sport. Unfortunately numbers are both limited while others are required for other sports. The selection process will be conducted fairly by all teachers however, there will be disappointment for some. Our first round does not take place until Friday 21 March, week 8 of Term 1. We look forward to lots of fun and hopefully dry weather for this great competition.
Students wanting to start training for Cross Country or simply wanting to improve general fitness, are invited to attend morning training on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 7:50am. The first morning session will be next Wednesday 5 March. Joggers are required for these sessions (black school shoes not allowed). We look forward to seeing students involved (Years 1-7 welcome), as House Colour points will be awarded and added on to the final points tally at next terms Cross Country Carnival (Wednesday 23 April). Please meet Mr Dolan in the
undercover area outside the tuckshop. NOTE: School shoes to be worn if it is a formal uniform day for the students.
