    Phillips Monday Memo

    March 10-14, 2014


    Character Word: Determination is the firmness of purpose and courage.

    A Peek at Our Week:


    Reading: We will begin a review of how to identify and use text features in nonfiction texts. The students will take a reading test on Thursday and Friday. Math: We will work on comparing numbers with greater than, less than, and equal to. We will take a unit test on Friday. Writing: We will write a narrative to complement our art projects. Science/Social Studies: We will continue our unit on American Heroes and timelines.

    Reminders:
    Our class is in need of wide ruled notebook paper, colored printer paper, glue sticks, and pink erasers. If you are able to send in any of these items, I would greatly appreciate it! Students are encouraged to be responsible for their homework, binders, and Wednesday (red) folders. All homework is due on Friday, and Wednesday (red) folders should be turned in no later than Friday each week.

    Sound Check:
    We will be reviewing Bossy R teams this week with our sight words. We will also be working on the sounds of oi and oy.

    Getting 2nd Grade Ready:


    Neat handwriting is very important. Students in 2nd grade will be required to write across the curriculum, which means they will be writing in math, Social Studies, and Science. In order to help your child be prepared for this, please encourage neat handwriting at home. Students should not be writing backwards letters at this point in first grade.

    Sight Words and Family Words: Sight words:


    fern, bird, hurt, fur, sir

    Homework Help:
    When reading with your child at home, try the I read to you, You read to me strategy. To do this, your child would read one page (or one sentence) and you would read the next. Taking turns reading can help a child feel more successful when reading, especially when the text is difficult.
