PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD Leamers who are assessed as competent against this unit standard will be able to plan and set out for LIC water and sanitation works, understand and explain basic LIC methods, Perform Labour intensive water, sanitation, and appurtenant works, and identify faults and perform LIC water and sanitation repair and maintenance works. ‘These competencies complement the generic technical and supervisory competencies and forms part of the Elective leaming. It contributes to the development of a professional community of Construction Supervisors, The contribution to The National Skills Development Strategy is the key developmental interface between learners and new competencies to be achieved. It contributes to socio-economic transformation in that learners would be able to undergo RPLrassessment and thereby receive recognition for previous learning and experience. UNIT STANDARD RANGE 1. Water and Sanitation Labour Intensive Construction activities include a broad spectrum of works involving the excavating of trenches in a variety of materials, laying and joining of water and sanitation pipes and fittings, loading, handling, hauling, unloading, spreading, placing, mixing, levelling, and compacting of various natural and manufactured construction materials 2. Maintenance includes : routine, periodic, and preventative, as well as unscheduled and emergency maintenance. 6. Fittings include : tees, hydrant tees, bends, end caps, valves, reducers, compression fittings, couplings, repair couplings, junctions, channels, and both pressure and non-pressure joints, and flanged joints. 7. Water, Sewer and drain pipes include : uPVC, HOPE, earthenware (Vitrified clay), and fibre reinforced cement. 8. Trench excavations include for battering of side slopes in non-cohesive soils, and for shoring. 9. Cleaning of sewer and drain pipes includes rodding, and jetting, 10.
