Reflection
The Online Learning Experience: Mini-Module was created as a blended learning course
for fourth grade math students. I developed one of the six learning modules for a blended
learning experience. This online experience provides students with unit goals, objectives,
tools, and materials to be successful. I also designed a syllabus and communication
expectations for students to follow as they are interacting with others online.
Standard 3.3 states that candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and
blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student
learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and
administrators. To develop this Mini-Module, this project required me not only to design
a standards-based unit of study, rich in technology, but to also facilitate the course online
using Weebly as the learning management system. I modeled this unit as a blended
learning experience for fourth grade students, providing them with online modules with
instructional videos, goals, and activities. Each module was laid out with step-by-step
instructions for students to follow. Through this Mini-Module, students were also
responsible for keeping a blog and responding to peers blog posts, encouraging students
to extend their conversations past the walls of the classroom. As many of the unit
materials were provided online, students participated in unique learning experiences
where they could work at their own pace, learn mathematics through innovative practices,
and create materials based on their own learning.
By developing this Mini-Module, I learned that facilitating a unit in a blended or an
online class promotes new and innovative forms of teaching, learning, and assessment. It
is an excellent way to ensure units of study are planned thoroughly and all materials are
in the hands of students in a timely manner. The downside I found is that it takes much
more time to prepare.
This project directly impacts student learning at my school because it provides a plan for
students to experience math in a new, innovative structure with more face time with their
classroom teacher. It provides students with necessary materials to be successful
throughout the course, and it outlines an engaging routine and structure. The impact of
this experience can be assessed through parent and student surveys, as well as data
analysis on test scores from multiple years.
