DRUG STUDY MEFENAMIC ACID *Pain reliever Brand Name: Dolfenal Action: blocking production and release of chemicals that produces it and inhibits prostaglandin biosynthesis. Indication: treatment of mild to moderate pain, inflammation, and fever Dosage: 500 mg/tab q6 Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) or other non-steroidal antiinflammatory agents. Adverse Reaction: diarrhea, fever, skin rash, Feeling sleepy or unable to think clearly, Belly pain, heartburn, cramps, diarrhea, gas. Nursing Considerations: y Small frequent meals, frequent mouth care, sucking hard candy, or chewing gum for adverse reactions y Treatment should not be more than 7 days AMOXICILLIN *Antibiotic Brand Name: Amoxil Action: Prevents bacterial cell wall synthesis during replication. Bactericidal. Indication: treatment of infections of skin and skin structures Dosage: 500mg/cap every 8 hours (QID) Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins. Adverse Reaction: Dizziness, fatigue, skin rashes, urticaria Nursing Consideration: y Give in even doses around the clock for 10-14 days to ensure organism death and prevent superinfection y May give with food to prevent GI upset y Capsules may be opened and contents taken with fluid
METHERGINE *for contraction Generic Name: methylergometrine maleate Action: act directly at the uterine smooth muscles to stimulate rate, tone and amplitude of contractions. Indication: post abortal uterine bleeding Dosage: 1 tab 3x a day (TID) Contraindication: patients with severe hypertension. Hypersensitivity Adverse reaction: Abdominal pain, hypertension, headache Nursing Consideration: y Advice patient to take only as prescribed and not to exceed doses y Inform patient that abdominal cramps may be experienced
