Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

STEWARDSHIP OF TIME

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT
In todays Gospel, we hear that a number of Jesus followers left him because his message was too difficult for them to accept. In essence, they did not believe in him. He then asked the Twelve if they wished to leave as well. Peter responds by making a profound profession of faith in Jesus as Lord and Savior. The Twelve made a choice and stood by their choice, remaining loyal to their commitment to Jesus. A good question for our reflection might be this: Are we satisfied with the stewardship we exercise over our baptismal commitment? Are we just along for the ride? Are we keeping Christ in front of us as we make decisions about our daily activities, our relationships, our parish, issues in the workplace, issues such as peace and justice? What is the quality of our stewardship?

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE

Ten Commandments for Eucharistic Reverence

These Ten Commandments are taken from Our Reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist; O Come, Let Us Adore Him by Fr. Charles M. Mangan. Take time this week to work on this one commandment. We will continue to print one commandment each week. For an archive, please view previous bulletins on our website: www.ctklombard.org. IV. Enjoy the silence to which the Holy Eucharist beckons us. Grandiose or plaina majestic, ornate basilica or a sparsely appointed prison chapel, any space that houses the Blessed Sacrament is special and unique from other locations. There we act differently than in another place. We maintain a respectful decorum before the Holy Eucharist. Before, during and after Mass, we avoid useless talking in the presence of the Tabernacle so as to worship and focus our attention on the Risen Lord Jesus. Christ is summoning each of us to reflect quietly before His Body and Blood. Who is He? Who does God want me to become? Unnecessary chattering in the hallowed presence of the Holy Eucharist spoils the golden opportunity to learn much at the Masters Feet. There is a time for opening our mouths: responding to the prayers, singing, greeting our neighbors before and after Mass outside of the church and in the churchs vestibule. But when in the church proper we love and adore the Eucharistic Jesus by opening our hearts and ears and closing our mouths so to listen to His pearls of wisdom. Silence helps us to bask in the Blessed Sacraments indescribable glory.

Ministry of the Faith Formation Commission WEDNESDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY SEPTEMBER 5
This long, hot summer is winding down and its a good time to start thinking about fall and the coming season at Christ the King. The Wednesday Evening Bible Study Group will kick off the 2012/2013 season on September 5, in the East Room at 7 oclock. We are a small Christian community of about ten parishioners who meet on the first and third Wednesday evenings to discuss the various books of the Bible. To start this season we will study the Parables using Stories of the Kingdom by Amy Welborn as a guidebook. We have lively discussions and its a fun group of people. Please bring your Bible (although the Bible is not mandatory) and plan to join us and learn about the Parables and other stories of the Scripture. If you have questions please call Don at 630-629-3028.

Contemplation Across the World's Religions

Sr. Judith Sutera, OSB, will discuss "Contemplation Across the World's Religions" at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16, at the Rectory Assembly, Immaculate Conception Church, 7211 W. Talcott (at Harlem), sponsored by the Chicago Chapter of the International Thomas Merton Society. There is ample parking and admission is a freewill donation ($5 suggested). Sr. Judith Sutera, OSB, Here is a description of the talk: Merton was a groundbreaker in promoting the universal truths of contemplative living. Today, the dialogue and sharing of what is common in the spiritual quest is often lost in concerns about differences. As a member of the North American Board of Monastic Interreligious Dialogue, Sister Judith will look at the hunger for transcendence of all humanity and its importance in a troubled world.

Womans Choice Services is very happy to announce that our 2nd Annual Walk of Hope and Healing was a success!

Dear Fellow Parishioners, For those of you who may have missed the article last week my name is Rose Isaily and I will be hosting a table at Hospitality on September 2nd to share information on the Leukemia & Lymphoma Societys Team in Training organization. This week I would like to share how I became involved with TNT. Alone I was an Athlete I joined TEAM IN TRAINING and became a HERO! How did I come to join Team you ask? Well it all started back in 2002 when I picked up a flyer in one of the sporting goods stores which promised to train me for a Marathon, Triathlon, Half Marathon or Century Ride and take me to exciting destinations! How cool I thought this would be to do something like this with my husband so I brought it home and shared it with Mark. He seemed very interested in one destination in particular (Hawaii) but was skeptical whats the catch. Even though he suspected a catch he signed up to attend an info session anyway. When he returned from the info session which he attended alone, since I worked for a CPA firm at the time and it was tax season, he was very negative saying the catch is you have to commit to a training schedule and to raise money which of course we couldnt do that. Well they had our names and address so we continued to receive flyers and postcards about 3 times a year all of which went into the recycle. This was not something we were ever going to do we were busy people and how do they expect us to raise money! Well life happens and things change the first change that happened was Mark and I bought bikes. Our first bikes were hybrids that we rode on the trails of IL and then we were introduced to rode riding and had to buy Rode Bikes. The second thing that happened was the CPA firm that I worked for partners split and I was no longer employed but self employed and had a little more time. The third thing that happened was a flyer came in the mail! I signed up for an info session and dragged Mark along with me. The event I was interested in was a semi local century ride (ACC) so the fundraising was minimal and I signed up then and there. Since we began rode riding all Mark talked about was completing a century so this was going to be my chance to shut him up and do something that not only would force me to exercise but would enable me to fulfill a dream I had of helping others. So we joined Team In Training for the Apple Cider Century (Fall Season 2008) and have continued to participate in each event since either as a participant or support volunteer. Why do I continue to ride season after season? The reason I continue to ride is the mission, my teammates and of course it still forces me to get off the couch. Of the three though the Mission is my driving force for continuing to fundraise and train so one day when a parent hears that their child has leukemia they will also hear but its okay we have the cure! I AM COMMITTED TO TRAIN - ENDURE - ACHIEVE MATTER (TEAM) Rose Isaily

Womans Choice Services held their 2nd Annual Walk of Hope and Healing on Saturday, August 4th, 2012 at Gebhard Woods State Park in Morris. The 60 participants walked two miles, then gathered at the pavilion for food and family fun. The event featured Nancy Kreuzer, Regional Coordinator of the Silent No More campaign, as guest speaker. She shared her emotional testimony of abortion, forgiveness, and healing through Jesus Christ. Everyone at Womans Choice Services would like to extend a very special thank you to members of the Immaculate Conception Parish family in Morris for making this years walk a success. We also would like to thank our sponsors, Wal-Mart and Nestle Waters. We are grateful to all who walked or donated time, food and money, and to all those who keep us in their prayers. Womans Choice Services couldnt do our life-saving work without you!

Nancy Kreuzer from the Silent No More awareness campaign shares her testimony before the walk.

Calling All Ladies of Christ the King Parish

Ladies, did you know that as a member of Christ the King Parish you are already a member of the Council of Catholic Women? Well, you are, and we are happy to welcome you to the 2012-2013 year. Our goal is to serve our community as faithful stewards of Christ. Our meetings are usually held on the 3rd Monday of most months. There is a short business meeting followed by either a program or a social event. We sponsor various collections for worthwhile organizations, such as Undy Sunday in October for Catholic Charities and Operation Support Our Troops in November. The profits from our fundraisers are given to various charities and Christ the King Parish. There is a Board of 14 women who plan the CCW events, and a host of loyal, active members who participate in these activities. I hope that you will consider joining us for at least one evening. Once you do, Im sure youll be back! Make sure you stop at the CCW table at the Hospitality Weekend (September 1 & 2) for more information or to pay dues ($10) to become an active member. In June we asked members of CCW via email for suggestions on how to encourage members to become active in CCW. We asked for their thoughts, suggestions, and any questions that they might have. One member wanted to know what CCW does with all the money it raises. We answered, quite simply: we give most of it away! Take a look at what we have done:

Disbursements
Catholic Charities Back to School Fair Christ the King Piano Fund NCCW Campaign for Human Dignity CTK East Room Renovation Catholic Relief Fund Water for Life CTK Mortgage Reduction Programs for CCW meetings NCCW & JDCCW dues and events CCW Operating Expenses $625 $200 $200 $370 $152 $190 $275 $635 $420

We would not be able to do as much as we do for the community and Christ the King if it were not for the support you give! We thank you for your continued support of our fundraisers and all CCW projects. We hope to see you at our annual Salad Supper on Monday, September 17. It promises to be a fun, fulfilling evening! Mary Ellen Clish, CCW President (630)495-1339

VOCATIONS SURVEY
A recent study of men who were ordained in 2011 resulted in some interesting findings that might affect the way we approach vocations in our parishes: 66% were encouraged by their parish priest. Do not underestimate the importance of your invitation. Family plays a significant role: four in five have parents who are both Catholic; one-third have a relative who is a priest or religious; more than half report more than two siblings nearly 25% have more than five siblings. 71% were altar servers. Catholic education has had a strong impact on the ordinandi. In comparison to the average adult Catholic population, they are more likely to have attended Catholic elementary or high school. Of those who attended college before entrance into a seminary, 67% attended a Catholic college. More than half of the ordinandi are between the ages of 25-34. Over the last 5 years, the average age of ordinandi has been trending younger. Thank you for your faithful witness of priesthood. Please invite the young men in your parish to consider priesthood. Or feel free to pass on their name and contact information to me and I will be happy to contact them. God bless you, Fr. Burke Masters, Vocation Director

Adoration Sign Up Sunday

In his first homily as pope, Pope Benedict XVI stated, "In the Eucharist, we ourselves learn the love of Christ." It is timely to meditate on this profound statement, especially while hearing the Bread of Life discourse in our Gospel Readings during the month of August. "In the Eucharist, we ourselves learn the love of Christ." Father Peter, myself and the entire staff at Christ the King invite you to learn the love of Christ by rededicating yourself to a greater devotion to the Eucharist. As we approach the Year of Faith, we invite you to take time for Eucharistic Adoration in your life. What is Eucharistic Adoration? The Holy Mass, the Celebration of the Eucharist, is the source and summit of the Churchs actions. Everything we do is centered around the Liturgy. We consume the Bread of Life on Sunday, or daily, and it is this great Sacrament that gives us the grace to live our lives as Christ commands. Pope Benedict tells us, "...adoration is an intensification of communion (The Ratzinger Report" 1985 Ignatius Press). It brings us even closer to Jesus. It builds up the personal relationship with our Lord. Adoration can take place anytime you are at church. The Blessed Sacrament is always present in the tabernacle. When we arrive at church, take time to acknowledge the Real Presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Make an attempt to arrive early for quiet prayer; or to stay for a few minutes following mass. We are also blessed at Christ the King to be able to offer the solemn Rite of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. This is when the Blessed Sacrament is placed in the monstrance, a large gold cross with a window in the center to allow you to view the Host. During Exposition, it is required that there be someone present in the church at all times. The exposed Host can never be left unattended. We are currently in need of more people to commit to one hour of prayer weekly to ensure that Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament continues in our parish. If you are willing to make this commitment, we ask that you fill out the card in your pew, or contact me personally at the rectory office. Thank you to the hundreds of dedicated people who have committed to this time of prayer in the past; and thank you to all those who have been behind the scenes in the organization part of this ministry. Let us all learn the love of Christ by taking time for Eucharistic Adoration. Bill Runge Director of Music and Liturgy
