H

anuka or Hanukkah or
Chanukah (spell it any-
way youd like there
is no one right way to spell a
Hebrew word that contains a
sound not found in English) is
the Jewish Festival of Lights.
Many mistakenly think that it is
the Jewish Christmas, but that is
not the case; other than occur-
ring at the same time of the year
and involving gift-giving, these
two holidays have nothing to do
with each other.
So what is Hanukah? The
word Hanukah actually trans-
lates to dedication and it
recalls the miraculous military
victory of the pious Macabees
over the Hellenists who were
restricting Jewish life in ancient
Israel. When the Macabees won,
they rededicated the temple in
Jerusalem to the service of God,
hence the name of the holiday.
There is a legend that as the
Macabees prepared the temple,
they found only one cruise of oil
fit to be used to light the
Menorah for one day, but that
they lit it anyway and it miracu-
lously burned for eight days until
more oil was available for the
Menorah. This is why Hanukah
is known as the Festival of
Lights and is commemorated
with the lighting of a
Hanukiyah, a nine-branched
candelabra to commemorate the
eight-day holiday.
The annual observance of
Hanukah reminds us to remain
dedicated and true to God. The
light of the Hanukah candles
reminds us that miracles can
happen. Recalling the Macabees
reminds us of the importance of
fighting for what we believe in,
for religious freedom. As
Americans, we have much to be
grateful for we live in a free
nation that promotes religious
tolerance, but with freedom
comes responsibility. We need to
support our troops that defend
these freedoms around the
globe. We need to help those
who live in other parts of the
world that do not have these
freedoms, most notably many
African nations. And we need to
share the bounty that is ours
with those less fortunate here in
our own communities.
Hanukah is a home-based
holiday that gives us the oppor-
tunity to gather with family and
friends to celebrate, to remem-
ber and like the Macabees
to try to make a difference, even
though the odds are overwhelm-
ingly against us. May the light of
the Hanukah candles motivate
you to make a difference and
may 2013 be a year of health,
happiness and peace for one
and all.

P
eople engage the advice
and expertise of a retire-
ment and estate plan-
ning specialist to better serve
themselves, their spouses and
their families financially. It is
my goal in this column to help
the readers of Life and
Leisure circumvent the pot-
holes that line the financial
road by answering the ques-
tions that you or your neigh-
bors have about the task of per-
sonal financial management.
When weve used up the allot-
ment of days given to us by
God, most people would
choose to endow their loved
ones with as much wealth as
possible to lessen the financial
burden of their journey
through life. For me as a father
of four, this component of
proper retirement and estate
planning is the most urgent
matter.
My children were born
into a much different America
than I was one with fewer
opportunities for success and
with a greater cost to prosper
and survive. I find it impera-
tive to do my best to provide
for my kids future to the best
of my ability. In addition, the
challenge to provide for ones
own financial future, resulting
in a golden retirement, has
become a struggle for more and
more people approaching 65
today. The fastest growing seg-
ment of our population is peo-
ple over 90! There are tens of
thousands of people exceeding
age 100 and the insurance
industry mortality table now
extends to age 121 imagine
that! A great deal of people
will outlive their money, but
not if they own longevity
insurance! Ever heard of it?
Education pertaining to
profitable retirement planning
never materialized in the pub-
lic school system, probably
because they couldnt find
qualified people to teach the
classes. But, they can teach
students how to conjugate a
verb in four languages and
make at least two years of for-
eign language studies a require-
ment, when the only foreign
language that is necessary to
master is spelled M-O-N-E-Y!
Money management must be a
mandatory course in high
school. The fact that it isnt in
the majority of school systems
amazes me! Therefore, every
high school graduate must get
the necessary financial educa-
tion somehow and somewhere
else in order to survive!
December begins the gift-
giving season. I would like to
suggest the perfect universal
gift that no one I know has
ever been unhappy with or
returned. The perfect gift
wouldnt break the budget, yet
it would offer a level of securi-
ty and peace of mind that has
no equal. What Im describing
is financial security through
the purchase of, or upgrade to,
your current life insurance pol-
icy. A properly designed policy
can offer many benefits to both
the owner and the beneficiar-
ies, today and in the future. It
can be designed with one sin-
gle premium or funded annual-
ly over a period of years. The
policy would offer tax-free
accumulation of cash, access to
the cash in the event of an
emergency, a tax-advantaged
retirement income for the
owner and ultimately, a tax-
free death benefit for the bene-
ficiaries. It truly is the gift that
keeps on giving and has some
amazing unparalleled opportu-
nities.
My advice is to take a
moment to call and ask me
how the magic of life insur-
ance can benefit all of the
people on your gift-giving list.

insurance policy any more; you

Hurricane Sandy came
upon us like a thief in the
night, robbing us of power,
light, heat, electricity and all
those precious things we take
for granted. For many of us,
the storm broke into our
homes, wrecked them and
destroyed valuable contents,
just like a brutal and deter-
mined thief.
Hurricane Sandy has
escaped, but coming behind
her destruction is the certain-
ty that others lie in wait to
pounce upon and further hurt
the victims of Sandy. These
are thieves of another sort:
people who seek to prey upon
the weak and weary, victims of
the storm who are in desper-
ate need of repair services as
they try to get their lives and
property back to normal.
For those needing con-
struction services, here is
some advice: although many
contractors are reputable,
when there is a disaster there
are simply not enough compa-
nies to service the consumers.
This is the time that unethical
contractors will solicit you.
We at Azrak &
Associates can help you if you
are considering doing business
with a known or unknown
contractor with an offer of
materials or services for home
and property repair, recon-
struction and restoration
work. Do not proceed or pay
any money in advance with-
out a written contract, and
have that contract reviewed
by our office. At the same
time we have the ability to
research suits against contrac-
tors for fraud or failure to per-
form the promised work.
It is times like these
when people are most vulner-
able and desperate to get their
lives and homes and property
back to normal. They are most
likely to be victimized by
unscrupulous contractors
tempted to take advantage of
the situation by charging too
much, promising too much,
and delivering too little or
nothing at all.
In addition, you can be
in need of our services to work
through the complex issues of
your insurance coverage. We
expect arguments by insur-
ance companies and their
attempt to exclude damages
including property damage
and vehicle damage. To pre-
serve their cash reserves, your
homeowners insurance or
flood insurance company may
attempt to claim that cover-
age is denied and force you to
deal with federal agencies
when, in fact, it should pay
the claim.
We can help to make sure
that your storm losses are not
added to by either unethical
contractors or complex exclu-
sions of insurance policies that
may not be applicable to you.
Call 973-839-9062 for a free
consultation and to discuss
your situation. It might be all
you need to avoid confronting
another thief in the night.

T
ooth sensitivity affects
most of us during our
lifetime. It can be a
temporary, intermittent symp-
tom indicating dentin hyper-
sensitivity. Tooth sensitivity
can also be a prolonged, chron-
ic problem indicating perma-
nent nerve (pulp) damage to
the tooth.
A reversible pulpit, as
described in part three, is a
short, temporary, sharp pain
that stops when cold or heat is
removed from the tooth. Many
patients have felt similar sensi-
tivity when theyve had a
deep filling or crown (cap)
placed on or in the live tooth.
This temporary inflammation
can last a few weeks, and in
many cases, Advil, ibuprofen,
Aspirin, or other over-the-
counter anti-inflammatories
relieve the pain quickly. When
medication does not help, or
there is irreversible pulpitis
with serious, permanent dam-
age to the pulp, the best treat-
ment is to remove the nerve
during a root canal treatment.
This treatment may save the
tooth indefinitely when
restored with a crown.
Unfortunately, the only other
way to treat a tooth that has
abscessed is to remove it.
Nowadays, the constant
use of teeth whitening products
may be dangerous to the health
and sensitivity of a tooth in the
future. Whitening products,
whether-over-the-counter or
given by a dental professional,
end up dehydrating the water
in the dentinal tubules. This is
a side effect of whitening.
Constant use of these products
can cause permanent dentin
hypersensitivity, pulp damage,
and brittle teeth in later years.
There are very few studies that
back up this statement, but it is
the new hot topic in the dental
profession.
Treatment of dentin
hypersensitivity is done in vari-
ous ways. They all act to close
or to block the dentinal
tubules. The sensitivity tooth-
paste Sensodyne contains
potassium nitrate, which
appears to act on the nerve,
blocking its pain signal to the
brain. Other treatments
include fluoride, varnish,
GLUMA, dental resins or
adhesives (bonding), lasers, fill-
ings, and calcium hydroxide.
All of the above treat-
ments are available in my office
and may be used according to
each individuals necessity.
Tooth sensitivity is a com-
mon problem when it persists.
It should not be ignored. Call
us today if you are finding that
tooth sensitivity is bothering
you.

The Ys Abram B. Cohen Nursery School celebrated Thanksgiving with a great big Feast! Parents and
teachers helped to make sure every child was served turkey and all the fixings.
Blow, blow, thou winter wind, thou art not so unkind as mans ingratitude.
William Shakespeare
I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the
bone structure of the landscape - the
loneliness of it, the dead feeling of
winter. Something waits beneath it,
the whole story doesnt show.
Andrew Wyeth
M
ost people who are
talking about or
inquiring about cat
urination behavior are having
some undesirable issues at
home. No one really discusses
this when his kitty is using the
litter box as it should. Its when
it starts doing its business right
outside the litter box, on the
couch, or on your laundry in
the bottom of the closet that it
becomes a concern.
Believe it or not, if you are
troubled with house-soiling,
you are certainly not alone.
This is the most common
behavioral problem that cat
owners have to deal with.
Interestingly, many people
think that its for revenge.
Well, contrary to popular
belief, its not all about you! It
could be completely coinciden-
tal that your cat urinated on
the carpet at the same time you
decided to go away for a few
days. Then again, maybe the
neighbor you had watching it
forgot to give it its treats!
In all truthfulness, experts
say that cats do not have cogni-
tive abilities to calculate such
revenge. Its also important to
understand that your cat would
have to think that relieving
itself is a negative act if revenge
was the case, when really its
only the human owners who
view this act that way.
Litter Box Issues
It is quite common for cats to
avoid their litter box for
one reason or another.
Their behavior could be the
result of:
Changing Litter. Some litter
irritates certain cats. This could
be due to texture or even going
from non-scented to scent.
Some even make an unpleasant
dust cloud that your cat may
not care for.
Dirty. Would you want to
step over your own soiled areas
to relieve yourself? Well, nei-
ther does your cat. Sometimes
even felines who were fine with
their litter box being cleaned
once a day get a little more
fussy as they age and need it
cleaned more often.
Location. Have you moved
the litter box? If not, have you
moved something close to it
like suitcases, sporting equip-
ment, etc.? Cats can be very
sensitive to changes in their
surroundings.
Medical Issues
Many people get so caught up
in thinking that their cat
is being vindictive that
they fail to realize that
there could be health
concerns. Urinary tract
infections or cystitis
(inflammation of the
bladder) are often to
blame which can cause
frequent urination. In this case,
its often hard for the cat to get
to the litter box in time.
Liver, thyroid, and kidney
diseases, intestinal tract tumors
and parasites, and rectum or
colon inflammation can be to
blame as well. Its also impor-
tant to understand that as cats
get older, age-related issues like
muscular disease, disorders of
the nervous system and arthri-
tis can all make getting in and
out of the litter box a chal-
lenge.
Additional Cat
Have you brought in another
cat or could another cat you
already have be getting old and
a little bossier? Even a sweet
feline who has always shared
her litter box may be scared to
use it if her older brother is
having some territorial issues.
Quite often, adding a second
litter box in a different location
will often help with this cat uri-
nation behavior.

A
s a Penn State stu-
dent preparing to
become a speech
therapist, Melanie Adelman
has learned of the direct con-
nection between how well a
person hears and their ability
to communicate.
It is my vision to edu-
cate people about the con-
nection between hearing aids
and speech, and the great
need for hearing aids, said
Adelman, who speaks to
businesses and medical
offices to spread the word.
So many are surprised to
hear how many people who
need hearing aids cannot
afford them. Plus, people
have lost their jobs and their
insurance, which makes the
problem even more wide-
spread.
Thats why Adelman started
Hear2Help, which collects
used hearing aids and deliv-
ers them to the Wayne Lions
Club, where they are refur-
bished and donated to those
in need.
Adelman reached out to
Kristin Difidi, director of
philanthropy at Cedar Crest
in Riverdale. As soon as
she heard the goals of
Hear2Help, Difidi was excit-
ed to become involved. On
Thanksgiving, Cedar Crest
began an ongoing hearing aid
collection that will last until
after Christmas. Lots of hear-
ing aids have already been
donated by the residents and
staff.
I am so grateful for the
help that Cedar Crest gave
me, said Adelman, and I
want to thank everyone who
donated.

H
oliday shopping with
kids can be fun. Kids
enjoy giving gifts,
and bringing them along on
shopping excursions to offer
their input can make the sea-
son that much more special
for youngsters.
But bringing the little
ones along on a holiday shop-
ping trip can also be tricky, as
kids can easily grow tired or
bored at the mall. The follow-
ing are a few tips to ensure kids
and adults enjoy their holiday
shopping trips together.
Bring backup. Kids might
find shopping enjoyable at the
outset, but visiting store after
store can drain them of that
enthusiasm. To quell the
inevitable boredom, bring
along some backup, such as a
handheld video game or a
tablet or e-reader on which
kids can watch a favorite film
or television show.
Choose your shopping desti-
nation wisely. All malls and
retailers are certainly not
equal, especially when kids
will be accompanying you for
a day of shopping. Some malls
offer attractions for kids, such
as a merry-go-round or a live
performance with a holiday
theme. Such attractions pro-
vide some balance to a shop-
ping trip, giving kids some-
thing to look forward to
between store visits.
Dont be a Scrooge. An ice
cream cone, some holiday
cookies or a hot chocolate
might not be the healthiest
fare for youngsters, but such
items can make a shopping
excursion that much more
enjoyable. When shopping
with kids in tow, relax a
youngsters dietary restrictions
so they can enjoy some holi-
day treats while shopping till
they drop.
Give kids some spending
money. Kids are more likely to
engage themselves in a holi-
day shopping trip if they have
some spending money of their
own. Offer children some
money before leaving the
house, and tell them the
money is theirs to spend on
gifts as they see fit. Kids might
just enjoy looking for the per-
fect gift and hunting down a
holiday bargain as much as
Mom and Dad.

ntertaining is part of
the holiday season
when hosts and host-

many friends and family to
celebrate a time of giving and
togetherness. Gifts for the
host and/or hostess can show
appreciation to the men and
women who go above and
beyond.
A hostess gift can be as
simple or as extravagant as
your budget allows. Many peo-
ple tend to gravitate toward
food-related gifts because of
their simplicity and the idea
that they can be served at the
gathering of friends and fami-
ly. But conventional etiquette
suggests that hosts and host-
esses are not obligated to serve
the beverages or foods guests
bring and should not feel
ashamed to reserve them for
their own private use. So

guests may want to think out-
side the box when gifting hol-
iday hosts this season. Here
are some ideas to consider.
Flavored dipping oils: Herb-
infused oils lend a different
taste to prepared foods and
also can be used as a bread gar-
nish in lieu of butter. Pair a
flavored oil with a loaf of
gourmet bread and include a
decorative, shallow bowl that
can be used for the oil.
Wine caddy: The number of
restaurants that enable you to
bring your own beverages has
multiplied. This means that
diners can benefit from practi-
cal ways to transport their
favorite vintage from home to
the table. Wine caddies and
holders come in many differ-
ent designs, from some that
resemble a womans clutch to
suitcase-inspired designs.

After-dinner treat: Put
together a basket of foods that
can be served after dinner. A
citrusy palate cleanser, like
lemon-infused butter cookies,
fresh fruit and a sparkling bev-
erage may fit the bill perfectly.
Specialty stores often sell gift
towers this time of year that
package together delicious
treats.
Scented sugars: Oil isnt the
only condiment that can be
infused with aroma and addi-
tional flavor. Purchase can-
ning jars and fill them with
your favorite brand of granu-
lated sugar. Add flavorings,
such as cinnamon sticks,
vanilla beans, mint leaves, or
hazelnuts, to give foods a sub-
tle essence of flavor. Tie a bow
around the jar and present it
as a thoughtful
gift.
Garden gift
basket: Al-
though the cold
weather is here,
a garden gift
basket can still
make a wel-
come gift.
Include flower
seeds, fertilizer
sticks, a garden trowel, a pair
of gardening gloves and any
other essentials you can think
of.
Spa gift certificate: Enter-
taining is hard work and a
hostess may enjoy some time
to recuperate once the holi-
days have come and gone. A
gift certificate for a facial or
massage will provide at least
an hour of pampering.
Homemade treats: Much in
the way a hand-written
thank-you note can convey
how much you appreciate a
gift; a handmade gift can tell a
host that you were thankful to
be invited to an event. If you
prepare a signature dish, whip
it up and bring it along. Its
also easy to create some sim-
ple garnishes and package
them in a decorative tin or jar.
Think homemade salsa or a
homemade chocolate ganache
sauce.
Breakfast in bed: Enable the
host and hostess to sleep in
the next day by having break-
fast all ready to go. Put togeth-
er a basket or tray with indi-
vidual bottles of juice, packets
of tea or instant coffee and
some gourmet muffins or
scones. Add a jar of jam and
some small spreading knives
so breakfast can be served
with minimal hassle.
There are many gifts that
can treat a host or hostess to
something special as a token
of appreciation for opening up
his or her home during the
holiday season.

O
ften times, buying a
home opens up a
bottomless pit of
opportunities for projects and
improvements. While some
homeowners engage in differ-
ent repairs and fix-ups out of
necessity, many others like to
freshen-up their spaces out of
personal preference instead of
need. But even the most well-
intentioned projects can be
waylaid if budgets are tight.
What many homeowners
may not realize is that there
are many ways to make
updates and changes to a
home that do not require a
major overhaul or a large
price tag. The following are
seven projects that wont
break the bank.
1.Move around furniture.
You may be able to change
the look of a room without
spending any money. Interior
designers know how to
arrange furniture for maxi-
mum appeal, but the average
homeowner can do it, too.
Find a focal point in the room
and angle the furniture
toward it. Dont make the
focal point the television,
however. Try changing the
placement of chairs and sofas.
Simply moving a curio cabi-
net from one corner to anoth-
er may also make a difference.
2.Add lighting. Lighting at
different levels in the room
can create a vibrant impact.
Many homeowners mistaken-
ly put in a couple of table
lamps and think that will be
adequate. However, properly
illuminating a room means
varying the lighting to create
different moods at different
times. Plus, more light can
make a room feel more wel-
coming.
3.Add new pillows or drapes.
Changing a few aspects of a
room can give it an entirely
new look. If you want to add a
splash of color, think about
incorporating some new
throw pillows or change the
curtains. An accessory here
and there in a bright color
also can incorporate a new
hue without it being over-
whelming.
4.Change knobs or small
accents. Give a room a new
look by focusing on the small
details. Switch out cabinet
knobs for something updated
and modern. Take inventory
of wall outlets and light
switches and think about
selecting new ones that coor-
dinate with your home decor.
5.Use plants. Empty corners
or spots youre not certain
how to fill may benefit from a
plant. Plants are inexpensive
ways to add instant color and
visual appeal to a room. Plus,
having live plants can help
improve indoor air by filtering
out contaminants. A home
with plants also feels cozier.
6.Hang new wall art. It may
be time to look at your photos
and artwork and make a few
adjustments. Finding new
prints to hang could instantly
change a rooms ambience.
And you neednt spend a lot
of money on professional pho-
tography, either. Grab your
camera and take a few close-
up shots of flowers or take in
landscape scenery. Many of
todays home printers can
produce professional-quality
prints in minutes.
7.Try a new coat of paint.
After youve exhausted other
avenues, choosing a new
paint color may be the new
look you desire. Painting is
one of the least expensive yet
most dramatic methods of
changing a homes interior.
With dozens of hues to choose
from, and new apps that
enable you to take snapshots
of things in nature or in your
life and match them up to a
paint color, you will have
scores of opportunities to
explore fresh new colors for
your home.
When you get inspired
to make improvements to the
home but fear how much it
may take out of your wallet,
consider inexpensive tricks
that can induce a big wow
factor.

Seven inexpensive ways to update a home now
I
n April 2012, a wildfire
broke out in a compost
pile in an area on Staten
Island, NY, that formerly
housed the Fresh Kills
Landfill. Residents across the
island worried if the billow-
ing smoke rising into the sky
was toxic in nature as a result
of the years of trash that had
been buried in the soil.
Though its understand-
able to worry about contami-
nants that could be polluting
outdoor air, its important
not to overlook indoor air
quality as well.
According to the
Environmental Protection
Agency, air inside peoples
homes can be two to five
times more polluted than air
outside the home. Although
the EPA regulates the quality
of outdoor air and monitors
potential contaminants, the
air inside ones home is his or
her own domain. Oftentimes,
people do not realize how
polluted the air in their
homes and businesses can be.
Cigarette smoke, radon, car-
bon monoxide, lead-laden
dust from old paints, dirt-
filled carpet, household
cleaners, and furniture made
with wood glue containing
formaldehyde are all sources
of indoor air pollution. Even
cooking on a gas stove may
introduce high levels of
nitrogen dioxide into the air,
causing respiratory problems.
The National Safety
Council says that Americans
spend about 90 percent of
their time indoors, so poor
air quality can greatly affect
personal health.
There are several steps
that can be taken to improve
the quality of indoor air.
1.Open the windows and let
fresh air circulate. It is
important to change the air
inside of the home several
times a day to prevent the
buildup of pollutants. Even
opening windows a crack can
help.
2.Change the filters on home
heating and cooling systems
as the manufacturer suggests.
3.Routinely clean the
exhaust vents in kitchens,
bathrooms and laundry
rooms.
4.Consider the installation of
an air purification system in
the home. Or purchase in-
room HEPA filters.
5.Routinely clean bedding
used by pets and groom ani-
mals to remove shedded fur.
6.Avoid the use of toxic
cleaning products.
Thoroughly cleanse the air
by opening windows after
doing any cleaning.
7.Use natural pest control
procedures inside when pos-
sible.
8.Introduce more plants to
the home, which naturally
filter air.
9.Use detectors to test for
radon and carbon monoxide
in the home. If there are high
levels present, go outside and
investigate ways to identify
the problem and remedy the
situation.

E
ver wonder where to
get the best gnocchi?
Frustrated that you
cant find pasta fagioli
the way Nona used to
make it? There is so
much Italian culture in
Northern New Jersey,
but the most authentic
of it is tucked away.
You once had to rely
on your cousins
uncles great aunt to
share the best spots
with you, but now
New Jersey has a new
online tool, making
Italian discoveries all
the more easy. Its
called eFoti Espresso
Culture, and this site is
founded on the belief
that there are a lot of
really great things happening
for Italian culture in the
Northern New Jersey area
and that people need to hear
about them!
The founder of eFoti
Espresso Culture, Michael
Foti, Jr., was inspired by his
girlfriends father, who is the
chef and owner of Casa
Filippo on Bloomfield
Avenue in Caldwell.
Saverio cooks every
dish that comes out of the
kitchen and has an incredi-
bly loyal customer base, said
Foti. The restau-
rant has been in
business almost 12
years and has relied
almost exclusively
on positive word-of-mouth
advertising.
Everyone knows word-
of-mouth advertis-
ing is and always has been
the most valuable and cost-
effective way of getting a
message out there. But the
reach is only as
broad as the
mouths, said Foti.
I thought, what if
there was a trusted
third-party voice of
the community
someone who loves
everything authen-
tic Italian, seeks out
the best Italian
restaurants and is
involved in various
ways within the
Italian communi-
ties? He sought to
become that voice,
and eFoti Espresso
Culture was born.
The idea was to
share all the best
finds in the area
and serve espresso-
sized bits of infor-
mation about them.
The eFoti site strives to
be the most trusted, go-to
resource for local Italian cul-
tural information. Whether
youre seeking a great new
restaurant, Italian language
courses, local specialty goods,
an Italian service organiza-
tion or something else. The
sites passion explodes in
blotches of red, white and
green, eager and excited to
share whats been uncovered
so that others might enjoy it,
too.
We hope to build a
vibrant community that
shares back with us. If were
able to put a spotlight on
local businesses and organiza-
tions that benefits them, then
weve accomplished what we
set out to do, said Foti.

ture at www.efoti.com.

H
oliday hosts and
hostesses may want
to put a storage freez-
er on their wish list this year.
Having the ability to prepare
meals in advance and store
them easily for later use could
prove invaluable especially
for those who are opening
their homes for the holidays.
Food and celebrations
are unequivocally inter-
twined. While presents and
decorations may be important
parts of holiday festivities,
food is just as important for
hosts who want to throw a
successful holiday party.
Those who are welcoming
guests to their homes for the
holidays may fret over what to
serve and how long prepara-
tion will take, especially
when theyre busy with other
tasks. However, stretching out
food shopping, preparation
and cooking over a few weeks
can make the process much
more manageable.
A freezer can be a party
hosts best friend come the
holiday season. Many foods
can be prepared in advance
and then frozen until the cele-
bration. Also, having small
portions of pre-made foods
can be helpful when visitors
pop in unexpectedly and may
be hungry for a meal. Just take
something out of the freezer
and heat it.
Certain tips can ensure
foods made in advance are
stored properly and heat up
quickly.
Casseroles, baked pasta dish-
es and vegetables can be pre-
pared in advance and frozen.
Be sure to consult with any
recipes to see if items can
indeed be frozen if you are
unsure how they will fare in
the freezer.
Instead of preparing food
and storing it in one large
container, separate it into two
smaller containers so dishes
defrost quickly and dinner
time isnt delayed.
Use packaging specifically
designed for use in the freezer.
These products will offer extra
insulation against freezer
burn, which dehydrates food.
Keeping air out of the packag-
ing will help to alleviate cases
of freezer burn and potential
waste of good food.
Mark packages with the date
the foods were packaged as
well as what is inside. This
makes it easy to keep invento-
ry of what is in the freezer.
Defrost foods in the refriger-
ator the night before the holi-
day meal will be served.
Heating foods that arent still
frozen considerably cuts down
on cook times.
If food cannot be defrosted
before cooking, keep in mind
that you may have to cook
foods longer than normal.
Many desserts also can be
frozen. Freeze pies before they
are cooked. Cakes can be
frozen if you freeze the layers
separately. Then assemble and
frost the cakes before serving.
Cream pies cannot be frozen,
but you can use pudding in
place of cream in many recipes
and be able to freeze them.
Brownies and other bar
recipes will freeze and carry
well.
If you dont want to have
everything prepped in
advance and enjoy the taste of
a freshly cooked meal, consid-
er preparing side dishes in
advance and then leave the
roast or turkey to cook. Any
steps you can take ahead of
time will dramatically cut out
the time you have to spend in
the kitchen while guests are
around.
Dont feel shy about cutting
corners when possible. If
youre cooking the entire
meal, invest in pre-made
frozen appetizers to save time.

M
en and women who
have tried to sell a
home are likely
familiar with the phrase curb
appeal. Curb appeal is similar
to getting ready for a big date,
only youre not dressing your-
self up to make a strong first
impression. Instead, improving
curb appeal involves dressing
your home up in the hopes it
makes a strong first impression
on prospective buyers, many of
whom will have a strong opin-
ion about the property before
they even get out of their cars
to have a look around.
A home with strong curb
appeal can entice buyers who
are likely to believe that a
home with a well-maintained
exterior is likely to have an
equally impressive interior.
Homeowners who want the
process of selling their home
to go smoothly can improve
the propertys curb appeal in a
number of ways, many of
which dont necessitate a sub-
stantial home improvement
budget.
Clean up. The most effective
way to improve curb appeal is
to clean up the property. Many
homeowners are savvy enough
to remove toys and other items
from the yard before showing a
home, but cleaning up goes
beyond removing clutter from
the property. Make sure all
hedges are trimmed and
remove weeds, sticks and other
debris from any flower beds.
Lay mulch in the flower beds
and garden, as mulch prevents
weed growth while helping the
soil retain moisture, resulting

How to improve your homes curb appeal
continued on next page
in more attractive gardens to
catch a buyers eye.
Get an edge on other sell-
ers. Edging is another easy and
effective way to improve curb
appeal. Edge driveways, side-
walks and other walkways
around the property, removing
or trimming anything that is
hanging over the driveway or
walkways. If the boundary
between your driveway and
lawn is not distinct, consider
installing edging materials
such as stone or bricks. The
edging can be level with the
driveway or elevated, but keep
in mind that elevated drive-
way edging can protect the
lawn, preventing kids from rid-
ing their bicycles onto the
lawn or cars from driving onto
it. Adding edging is not a very
difficult do-it-yourself project.
Take to the trees. Many
homeowners grow accustomed
to overgrown trees around
their property and may not
notice that low-hanging,
unsightly branches are hiding
the home from view. Buyers
want to see the house, so take
to the trees and trim any
branches that hang too low or
obscure your home.
Clean the gutters. Leaves
and sticks hanging from the
gutters are a red flag to buyers,
who tend to associate clogged
gutters with roof damage.
Clean the gutters thoroughly
before putting your home up
for sale and keep them clean
throughout the selling process.
If your property includes lots
of trees, install guards to keep
twigs and leaves out of the gut-
ters.
Make the home accessible
through the front door. Many
homeowners enter their home
through a side door or through
their garage. If you fall into
this category, keep in mind
that prospective buyers will be
entering through the front
door, so make this area accessi-
ble. Clear any clutter, such as
overgrown hedges, away from
the front door, and consider
upgrading the door handle to a
more modern feature. In addi-
tion, make sure the lock on
the front door doesnt stick,
forcing the realtor and buyers
to immediately struggle before
entering the home. You want
buyers and their real estate
agents to get in and out of the
home as smoothly as possible.
Make sure all plants, includ-
ing flowers, are living.
Dehydrated or dead plants and
flowers are eyesores, and they
will give buyers the impression
that you didnt pay much
attention to your property.
Make sure all plants are alive
and thriving and replace those
that arent. You can replant
new flowers or plants or just
use potted plants instead.
When purchasing new plants,
choose low-maintenance vari-
eties that appeal to buyers who
want good vibrant plants but
might not want to put in much
work into the garden.
So when selling a home,
homeowners can employ a
number of tactics to improve
their homes curb appeal.

T
ired of looking older than you feel? Fed up with
creams and goops that don't work? Now theres
new help for sagging faces. Imagine looking in
the mirror and seeing yourself 10 or 15 years younger.
Thats what a facelift or K-lift
(TM)
can do for you. And
its not just for movie stars or models anymore. New
procedures and techniques make facelifts more affordable
and virtually undetectable for the rest of us. Why look
50 years old when you can look 40?
So do your homework. Research carefully. And get
all the information you can. The best way to start is to
get a free report entitled The Secrets of Ageless Skin,
a detailed account of procedures that rejuvenate the face.
Youll enjoy reading about Dr. Kassirs patients and how
much cosmetic procedures did for them. Youll also find
out if the nonsurgical K-lift
(TM)
or some form of facelift is
right for you. For a free copy of this informative report,
call (973) 692-9300 or email info@drkassir.com
anytime, 24 hours a day to find out how to turn back
the clock a decade or more and look your best in 2013.
