Delta Kappa Gamma, Xi State Iota Chapter News: Greetings DKG Sisters
Greetings DKG sisters, It is spring..it is spring, it IS spring...I keep telling myself as I look out my window blinded by snow showers at the daffodils, crocus and red birds. Obviously the groundhog is not in charge! The good news is...it has to get warmer by April 11th and I'm looking forward to warm camaraderie with Iota sisters. We'll have a great time meeting and greeting our XI State President, Dr. Kathie Harned. Reflections of the past year remind me of how blessed we are. Our membership has grown having 2 new members, 1 transfer member and 1 reinstatement. Yea!!! Words cannot express my appreciation for the contributions that have been made throughtout the year by Iota members from the : * informative and just plain FUN programs, * amazing musical performances, * participation by members attending events/opportunities from XI State that encourage and inform us as mentors to other teachers, * wonderfully decorated tables and divinely delicious desserts, and * time devoted and hard work by committee members has given Iota a sense of excellence with their contribution to the progress of our chapter. We want to congratulate JoAnn Smith for being named to serve on XI State Finance Committee. She is President of TRTA and has been watching over the finances for TEA, ETRTA, and her church for many years. So we'll be in good hands! Please check your calendar and mark the date for the June 6-8 XI State Convention held at The University of the South in Sewanee. We are on duty along with Beta Upsilon to decorate for the Presidents banquet on Friday. Also please bring ideas for our basket for the silent auction at XI State. Jane Bowlin, visual arts chair, designed a very attractive basket last year using the theme chosen with items members donated. Hostess Group 6 will once again prepare beautifully decorated tables and delicious desserts. Food will be catered for under $10.00. We have two special events to celebrate and a surprise

Marcy Hagan sang beautifully as her friend Charlotte Ellis accompanied her on the flute. This was Marcy's last meeting with us as she is moving to South Carolina to be closer to her daughter. We will miss you! Program by Gracious Designs inspired us to bring spring into our decor with small colorful accent pieces. Voted to pay reserved dues for our members whose families sent a letter requesting we drop them from our membership. In the March 2013 Leadership Links, Kathie Harned sent information concerning the Ceremony of Remembrance. It said that a deceased member who had dropped her membership would not be recognized at the Ceremony of Remembrance. Submitted Pat Coxs nomination for the Order of the Rose award for outstanding service to Delta Kappa Gamma.

Previously, tribes had no jurisdiction over non-tribal members, even if they are married to native women or reside on native lands.

From US Forum of DKG International CONGRESS REAUTHORIZES VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT (VAWA) The Violence Against Women Act which was allowed to lapse when it was not acted on in the last session of Congress has passed both houses of Congress and been signed by President Obama. Below is a listing of what this act does. PROVISIONS OF THE REAUTHORIZED VAWA VAWA has improved the criminal justice response to violence against women by: holding rapists accountable for their crimes by strengthening federal penalties for repeat sex offenders and creating a federal rape shield law, which is intended to prevent offenders from using victims past sexual conduct against them during a rape trial; mandating that victims, no matter their income levels, be kept safe by
Changes at Xi State For the first time ever, there will be no Visual Arts Display by the chapters at the Xi State Convention this year. The Visual Arts Display will highlight the work of the Xi State committees for the past biennium. In the past we have highlighted the handwork of Iota members, the
history of Iota chapter, and the activities during the year. This year we will be interested to see what our own Rosemary Smith comes up with for the Area Directors table! Let us know if we can do anything to help, Rosemary. Also, we had hoped to complete our raffle quilt before Xi State, but I dont have quite all the blocks back, and I would like not to have to do a hasty job of the quilting. Were going to extend this to 2014. Im looking forward to having a quilting bee with Iota members to finish the quilt! Im retiring at the end of May, so maybe there will be time at my disposal! After 42 years, there had better be! Want to Go Enjoy the Florida Sun? Come to the edge. We might fall. Come to the edge. It's too high! COME TO THE EDGE! And they came, and we pushed, And they flew.
