Skatetime Fun

The students at Cortland Elementary School look forward to the annual “Skatetime Program.”
The program is implemented during a three-week period in physical education classes which are held
on Mondays and Fridays. This year’s program will start on Monday, January 10th and ends on Mon-
day , January 31st. The students are fitted with their own pair of skates and are taught the proper tech-
niques of skating. Witnessing the improvement in our students’ skating abilities as they progress
through the grade levels here at Cortland is highly rewarding.
Our students are afforded the opportunity to learn a great way to exercise and have fun while
learning to skate. Due to the efforts of many such as our P.E. teacher, Mr. Bob Wood, and a host of
volunteers, this program has been a huge success. We look the gym floor throughout the skating unit.
We also want to say thanks to all the volunteers who help with this program that the students
thoroughly enjoy. Lastly, we cordially invite you to attend to watch your child/children or grandchild/
grandchildren zoom around the gym floor on eight wheels during their designated times below:
Monday and Friday, January 10th. 14th, 21st, 24th, and 31st

Donuts for Dads

On Wednesday, January 19th Cortland Elementary and our P.T.O. will be hosting “Donuts
for Dads” in the gymnasium starting at 7:30 A.M. and ending at 8:00 A.M. Cortland Elementary
School and our P.T.O. would like to cordially invite all Cortland Elementary School fathers/guardians
to come enjoy food and fellowship with your child/children. Come enjoy some complementary milk,
donuts, and quality time with other fathers/guardians and your/their children.
We are going to have parking in the grassy area and the playground area on the east/
southeast side of the school. We ask that if spaces are available in the grassy area or the east/
southeast playground area when you arrive that morning that you park there. (We will have
the east/southeast playground entry doors unlocked that morning so that those who park in the
back of the school can walk through the school to the gym.) If that parking area is fully utilized
it will make the front parking area less congested for student drop off traffic and bus traffic. If the
east/southeast parking area is full, then we can use some of the lot on the west side of the gym.
That morning our custodian, Denny Plumer, a teacher volunteer, and I will be out directing traffic
toward the east/southeast parking areas. Thanks in advance for your cooperation on the parking issue.
We look forward to seeing the fathers/guardians and their child/children on Wednesday, January
19th .

Cortland Christmas Hat/Glove Drive and Canned Food Drive

On behalf of Cortland Elementary School I would like to express our deepest appreciation for
the generosity displayed during our “Hat and Glove/Mitten Drive” and our “Canned Food Drive.” The
response to both drives was absolutely overwhelming as we ran out of room on the “Hat/Glove Christ-
mas Tree” and had stacks of canned food items ready for pick up by the 96.3 Cool Bus. Thanks to all
who have given of their time, talents, or funds to initiatives here at Cortland School. The Cortland
School Family always steps up in a big way when there is a challenge or when there is need. I extend
a heartfelt thanks to the Cortland School family members for giving of yourselves throughout the
years.
SCHOOL CLOSING ……
If school is to be closed because of bad weather remember to listen to our local radio
stations they will announce it as soon as they receive the message from our school officials.
Also, if it would be necessary to close school early on a school day our local stations will
also announce that. When the weather forces the early closing of school, we will go by the
emergency dismissal forms that were filled out before winter break. If there is a 2-hour
delay kindergarten students will report to school like the others students at 10:00 and will be
dismissed at 11:45.

Tune in to local radio stations WZZB (1390), WKKG (101.5), and QMIX (107.3) for school closings or delays. Or Television
stations rtv 6, WLKY Channel 32, WHAS Channel 11, WTHR Channel 13, Fox 41, WISH TV 8, Fox 59,
WB4
Or set up for email or text alerts on DynaCal.

PLEASE HELP US ---Make dismissal safe and smooth.

1. Keep the way your child goes home the same every day unless there is an urgent
reason.
2. If you must change the way your child goes home, a written note, email, or call to the
office is best. We will take phone call changes until 2:05. Changes after this time will not
be given to the teacher until after 3:05, unless it is an emergency, so that instructional time
is not disrupted.
3. Do not pick up your child early unless it is an emergency. If you must, please send a note
in the A.M. w/child asking for the teacher to send them to the office at a specific time.
3:05 – Early busses only
3:10 – School Officially over
3:15 – Car Rider Dismissal
3:45 – Late Busses
If you pick your child up before 3:10 it will be noted on attendance. Lately we have had a
large number of parents picking up their children early and calling last minute to change
their ride arrangements . This disrupts classes, prevents teachers from using the whole day
and can cause a child to get on the wrong bus or go to the wrong place. The earlier the
better in regards to such calls.
