To Whom It May Concern: It is without reservation that I support Scott Niemann for a position in your organization. Scott is uniquely qualified for this position. He is a strong, effective communicator, facilitates dynamic and distributed leadership, and has a proven track record of success. You will be immediately pleased by your decision to add Scott to your team, and in little time you will begin to see the positive impact of his presence on your organization. As a peer of Scotts in the principal ranks for the past six years and, more recently, as the Executive Director of Teaching and Learning for Burlington Edison School District, I draw upon a great deal of personal and professional experience with Scott in order to make such assertions. As a communicator, Scott is highly effective. I have no doubt that you have already found the quality of his written application to be quite high. This is indicative of all written communication produced by Scott. He is masterful at generating support and enthusiasm for the initiatives at his school by creating clear, concise, high quality letters, newsletters, and internal documents for varied audiences. In addition, Sco tt is a technology maven within our district. As leaders in the district we lean on Scott to help us understand the newest tools and strategies of effective communication that are housed within the Web 2.0 world. All of this said, Scott is at his best communicating face to face. Whether in front of a group of hundreds or in a room with few, Scott is comfortable and clear with his message. He communicates with a genuine passion for the work. He listens intently and always responds in a kind, respectful manner. Just as Scott realizes that quality communication leads to strong support and partnerships for our work, he realizes that collaborative leadership builds broad ownership for the success of the system. Originally, I was made aware of the collaborative leadership model that Scott implemented in his building during a presentation that he made to the Principal Leadership Academy at ESD 189. This year, I have participated in an ongoing reflective dialogue with Scott as he continuously seeks to improve the model. Scott is a strong proponent of the DuFour Professional Learning Community model. He has strategically facilitated the grouping of participants and provided the necessary support and guidance for the team leaders and the groups to achieve their goals. Scott has several school-wide initiatives in place related to high quality teaching and learning, all of which were generated by the staff through collaborative processes. I believe that Scott draws heavily upon his Oregon State Crew experience to instill the value of teamwork amongst his staff. Finally, I believe that you must follow the logic when hiring new personnel. Scott Niemann went from being the Alaska State Teacher of the Year to being a successful assistant principal to being a highly effective principal, and finally to flourishing within the Seattle University Superintendent Certification Program. Scott is an extremely hard worker who is not afraid of taking on the challenging elements of this work. Scott has worked through the difficult process of releasing a teacher that was unfit to put before students. He has worked to drastically cut his budget while providing essential support following three consecutive failed bonds. He is a member of the districts current bargaining team. Also likely harkening back to the days of rowing, Scott prepares to succeed. He does not show up on race day and hope that all goes well. Scott was effective as a teacher because he diligently planned and worked the plan in order to help students succeed. Scott will work hard to understand the expectations and procedures of this new position so that he can develop a plan for success. Knowing Scott, he has already started. Please do not hesitate to contact me for further elaboration or additional information. Sincerely,
