According to Siddha System, Nature is man and man is nature and therefore both are essentially one.
Man is the microcosm and the Universe is Macrocosm, because what exists in the Universe exists in man
The earth is the first element which gives fine shape to the body including bones, tissues, muscles, skin, hair etc.
Water is the second element representing blood, secretions of the glands, vital fluid etc. Fire is the third element that gives motion, vigor, vitality to the body, it also helps digestion & circulation. Air is the fourth element, which helps in respiration. Above all, ether is the characteristic of man's mental and spiritual faculties.
The 5 senses of man correspond to the 5 elements Hearing is caused by the element ether
Smell by the element air Seeing by the element fire
These three cardinal humours Vatha, pitha, kapha - are responsible for a persons mental / physical qualities and dispositions.
The fingers of the hand represent these five elements individually. The thumb represents fire,
The index finger represents air, The middle finger represents space,
The ring finger represents earth &
If these 5 elements are in harmony with one another in the body we are healthy. Imbalance in these 5 elements leads to imbalance in tridoshas which leads to disease. Treatment is aimed at the restoration of equilibrium of the tridoshas.
