    Fast food restaurants often add ice to drinks to cool them down. Ice cools drinks because it absorbs the drinks' thermal energy as it melts. The temperature of the drink transfers to the ice, which has a higher heat capacity and heat of fusion than the liquid. This causes more cooling than simply adding cold water. Using ice cubes is more effective for cooling than cold water alone because the heat absorbed by the ice cubes as they melt lowers the drink's temperature more than an equal amount of cold water would.

    The temperature of water is lower when Ice is added to the


    substance, I will now go on to explain why this happens.
    Temperature is in fact a type of energy inside an object, the
    more that particles (or photons) move, generally results in
    higher temperature. Temperature will always flow from the
    hotter to the cold this means that the hotter liquids energy will
    be passing into the ice that is needed to melt it. However this
    also means that the air temperature will gradually bring the
    liquid back to its original hotness. (if the temperature is +)

    Specific latent heat


    The specific latent heat of something is the energy required to
    raise 1kg of that mass by 1oc. The definition of Specific latent
    heat is: "The amount of energy per kg (unit mass) required to change ice(4)
    to water without change in temperature."

    The specific latent heat of Fusion


    The specific latent heat of fusion is 336,000 J (J for Joules). This is the (4)
    amount required to change 1kg of ice to water and vice versa. This can
    also be simplified to 336KJ/kg.

    Specific heat capacity


    Specific heat capacity means the amount of energy required to
    change the temperature of 1kg of a mass by 1 oC. Different

    substances have different specific heat
    capacities.
    The specific heat capacity of water is 4.184J/G, which is exactly
    equal to one calorie. However the specific heat capacity for
    water in a solid form (Ice) is only half that 2.97 (0.50 cals).
    This means that ice requires far less energy to heat and should
    melt quickly in the(8)drink.
    The cooling of a drink with a cube of ice is more effective than
    using cold water because of the energy extracted from the
    drink to melt the ice (heat of fusion). The liquids change in
    temperature will be far greater than if cold water was used.
