History
ThemajorinterestsoftheAIEEwerewirecommunications
(telegraphyandtelephony)andlightandpowersystems.The
IREconcernedmostlyradioengineering,andwasformedfrom
twosmallerorganizations,theSocietyofWirelessandTelegraph
EngineersandtheWirelessInstitute.Withtheriseofelectronics
inthe1930s,electronicsengineersusuallybecamemembersof
theIRE,buttheapplicationsofelectrontubetechnologybecame
soextensivethatthetechnicalboundariesdifferentiatingtheIRE
andtheAIEEbecamedifficulttodistinguish.AfterWorldWarII,
thetwoorganizationsbecameincreasinglycompetitive,andin
1961,theleadershipofboththeIREandtheAIEEresolvedto
consolidatethetwoorganizations.Thetwoorganizations
formallymergedastheIEEEonJanuary1,1963.
