Section A (Question 1) 16 marks

A student carries out an experiment to investigate the relationship between the length of
the pendulum, l and its period of oscillation, T, for a steel pendulum bulb. An inelastic
string is tied to a retort stand and the other end of the string is tied to a steel pendulum
bulb. The length of the pendulum is adjusted to 70cm. The arrangement of the apparatus
is as shown in diagram 1.1. The pendulum bulb is displaced at a certain constant distance
then it is released so that it swings. Time taken for 10 complete oscillations, is taken
with a stopwatch. This step is repeated to get the second reading, . The actual readings
for the first and second reading are shown in diagram 1.2. This experiment is repeated
with different lengths of pendulum which is 60.0cm, 50.0cm, 40.0cm and 30.0cm.
Readings of the stopwatch for each of the lengths are shown in diagram 1.3, 1.4, 1.5 and

e) Heat insulator material is used to wrap around the beaker so that no heat is lost to
the surrounding.
Question 3 Wave
When two coherent waves that has the same frequency and phase or difference
between phases, interference of wave will happen. For 2 coherent sound waves, loud
sound and soft sound can be heard when walking pass the source of the sound waves.
A student carries out an experiment to investigate the distance between 2 coherent
sources and the difference of distance between nodal line and anti-nodal line. He uses 2
loud speakers as 2 coherent sources like in diagram 3.1.

Use the information in the box above and the result of the experiment;
a) Make a suitable inference (1 mark)
b) State a hypothesis that is suitable and can be investigate (1 mark)
c) Describe how you can design an experiment to test your hypothesis. Use the suitable
apparatus like stroboscope, ripple tank and others. In your description, state clearly the
following;
i) Aim of the experiment
ii) Variables involved in the experiment
iii)List of apparatus and materials
iv) Arrangement of apparatus
v) Procedure of the experiment, which includes the method of controlling the
manipulated variable and method of measuring the responding variable
vi) The way you tabulate the data
vii) The way you analyze the data
(10 marks)
Answer :
a) Difference of distance between nodal line and anti-nodal line depends on the distance
between 2 coherent wave.
b) The bigger the distance between 2 coherent wave, the smaller the difference of
distance between nodal line and anti-nodal line.
c) i) To investigate the relationship between the distance between 2 coherent wave and
the difference of distance between nodal line and anti-nodal line.
ii) Manipulated variable: Distance between 2 coherent sources
Responding variable: Difference of distance between nodal line and anti-nodal line
Constant variable: Depth of ripple tank
iii) Apparatus and materials: Ripple tank, stroboscope, meter rule

iv) Arrangement of apparatus:

v) Ripple tank is fixed and the depth of the water is made sure to be the same. 2
coherent sources are placed in such that there is a 2.0cm difference between them.
The shape of the interference of the wave is observed using a stroboscope. Value x
which is the difference in distance of 2 nodal lines are measured.
The experiment is repeated with 3.0 cm, 4.0 cm, 5.0 cm, 6.0 cm and 7.0 cm for the

distance between the 2 coherent sources respectively.

vi)
vii) Graph of x against a is plotted. The x decreases as a increases. The hypothesis is
proven true.
Question 4 Light
Diagram 4.1 shows student A that is standing in the swimming pool looked shorter when
another student, student B, looked at him from the side of the swimming pool. This is
because the height of the legs of student A that is observed by student B is the apparent
height of his legs instead of his real height of his legs.

Use these information;

a) Make a suitable inference (1 mark)
b) State a hypothesis that is suitable and can be investigate (1 mark)
c) Describe how you can design an experiment to test your hypothesis. Use the suitable
apparatus like glass blocks with different lengths, pin and others. In your description,
state clearly the following;
i) Aim of the experiment
ii) Variables involved in the experiment
iii)List of apparatus and materials
iv) Arrangement of apparatus
v) Procedure of the experiment, which includes the method of controlling the
manipulated variable and method of measuring the responding variable
vi) The way you tabulate the data
(10 marks)
Answers :
a) There is real depth and apparent depth because of refraction of light
b) Refractive index is the ratio of real depth and apparent depth
c) i) To investigate the relationship between real depth, apparent depth and refractive
index.
ii) Manipulated variable: Real depth
Responding variable: Apparent depth
Constant variable: Type of glass
iii) Apparatus and materials: Glass block, pin, cork

iv) Arrangement of apparatus:

v) Apparatus are arranged as shown in the diagram above. Length of the glass block is
measured and recorded.
Observed the pin O through the block. Pin I is moved back and fro until the position of
the image is the same as pin I and pin O. Distance of pin I from the side of the block is
observed and recorded as apparent depth.
The experiment is repeated with different length of glass block.

vi)
vii) The table is completed. It seems that all of the glass blocks have the same refractive
index.
