    Thank you for coming to First Presbyterian Church of
    Orlando this morning! We worship together as a church
    family in four services on Sundays: Traditional worship in
    the Sanctuary at 8:15am and 11am, and Genesis worship
    in the Sanctuary at 9:45am and in Lee Fellowship Hall at
    11:00am.

    Our Genesis services utilize an environmental lighting effect


    called haze, a theatrical humidifier to thicken the air to enhance
    lighting. Both Lee Fellowship Hall and Sanctuary hazers are
    water-based and safe.

    NOTES
    Traditional Worship
    The name, Joshua, in Hebrew, means Yahweh is
    salvation. If we were to translate this Hebrew name
    into Greek, it would be Jesus. Joshua was a type of
    Christ figure in the Old Testament. He was the one
    who led the Israelites across the Jordan River into
    the Promised Land. The Jordan River in some ways
    represents the crossing over from death to eternal
    life, to the Promised Land, to heaven. Jesus is the
    one who makes this passage possible. The Old
    Testament was a shadow of the New or as some have
    said, “The Old Testament is the New concealed and
    the New is the Old revealed.” Jesus was the ultimate
    fulfillment of Joshua’s role. Not only did He lead
    all God’s children (us) into the Promised Land, He
    bore the sin of all the people of the world to make
    transition through death possible. He endured the
    scourging of a flesh-shredding whip with physical
    abuse and verbal mockery. Whereas Joshua was
    promised “I will be with you,” Jesus experienced
    separation from the Father on behalf of His people.
    The whip on the cross in the front of the sanctuary
    is a visual testimony to the depth of Christ’s love,
    courage, and determination to do His Father’s will.
    Truly in Jesus is our sole hope of salvation. Our
    opening hymn is one glorious acclamation of praise

    THIS WEEK'S DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
    1. What is the bravest thing you have ever witnessed?
    Who is the bravest person you have ever met?
    2. Although Moses has died, God’s promise to the
    Israelites remains. What exactly is that promise and
    what does it mean for the Israelites?
    3. In verse 5, God promises that in the same way He
    was with Moses, He will be with Joshua. He further
    promises that He will never leave nor forsake him.
    Considering what comes next, why do you think this
    assurance is important?
    4. The Israelites are finally about to cross the Jordan
    River into the promised land, as promised to their
    ancestors? Why do you think it has taken so long for
    this promise to be fulfilled?
    5. Some have said that God answers prayers in three
    ways: Yes, no, and not yet. Can you think of a time
    when God’s answer to your pray was “not yet?”
    Why do you think this was His answer to you? What
    happened to you as you waited?
    6. In verse 7, God warns Joshua (and the Israelites) to
    “be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses
    gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the
    left, that you may be successful wherever you go.”
    Why do you think faithfulness and obedience are
    important to God?
    7. Verse 9 concludes with “Be strong and courageous.
    Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord
    your God will be with you wherever you go.” God’s
    active presence among His people is not specific
    to the Old Testament (see contextual note on John
    20:21-22). What does it mean to have God ever-
    present, wherever we might go?

    MAUNDY THURSDAY
    Worship with us on Thursday, March
    29, at 6:30pm in the Sanctuary. We will
    observe communion, and the Chancel
    Choir will lead worship with a creative
    presentation of the Fauré Requiem.

    GOOD FRIDAY
    Worship will be a Tenebrae service
    on Friday, March 30, at 6:30pm in the
    Sanctuary. The service will make use of
    gradually diminishing light through the
    extinguishing of candles. Each candle
    will symbolize the events that occurred
    in Jesus' life from the exuberant
    entrance into Jerusalem on Palm Sun-
    day, through the night of Jesus' burial
    on Good Friday.
