Celebration Assembly
Celebration Assembly today
included a maths takeover by our
wonderful Reception class who have
been working hard on their
Mathletics. With so many winners of
bronze and silver certificates
(standing) it was no surprise that the
precious Mathletics trophy was
awarded to their class. Many
congratulations to Reception, and
who knows, in a few years some of
them may well be our Maths
Ambassadors at Bronte School?

It was our pleasure to share some

Martial Arts success with Jaya (Year
4) this morning. Her certificate and
red belt are proof that she is making
good progress in this activity. Jaya
even showed us one of her Martial
Art moves on the stage and
emphasised the importance of this
self-defence art (nobody was going
to argue with her!).

World Book Day – Report by Mrs Prescott

Bronte came alive on Thursday with all things literate. We were all completely overwhelmed by the joy and
enthusiasm of the children, as we celebrated World Book Day.

The theme this year was to create a favourite character in any medium, such as drawing, painting, sculpting, making
cakes or anything that could be used to create a character. Yesterday morning, the range and variety was quite eye
boggling, with an Iron Man made from cardboard boxes, tins and rubber gloves (and was taller than Hannah, his
creator!), cakes both baked and decorated in the shape of a character, papier-mâché, painting, drawing and many
other wonderful creative ideas.

The school assembly was alive with anticipation and enthusiasm, as the whole school came together to celebrate the
joy of books. Myself, Mrs Wood and Mr Hardwick were all involved with the judging and, whilst every single entrant
deserved an award, we finally made the very difficult decisions of finding a winner and runner up for each class.

Lunchtime Prayer
Bronte children from Years 1-6 have created their own lunchtime prayers in RE lessons this term.
Lunch time is a great time for togetherness and reflection and children have enjoyed the
opportunity to share their thoughtful words with others.

Next week it will be Jesse’s prayer (Year 5) Nyah’s prayer (Year 1) that will be shared at lunchtime
as our Prayer of the Week.
Dear God,
Dear God,
Thank you for the dinner ladies who provide
us with wonderful food that we eat.
Thank you for our teachers. Thank you
for our delicious food and clean water.
We thank you that we are lucky enough to have
food.
Amen

British Science Week

Over the coming week children will be participating in a range of
exciting activities as we mark British Science week - a nationwide
celebration of science, technology and engineering. This year’s theme
‘Journeys’ encourages children to think not only about physical
journeys but about the different scientific journeys that affect the
objects, animals and nature around us...

Pancake Races
This Tuesday was Shrove Tuesday - the day before Lent starts (on Ash Wednesday). The name
Shrove comes from the old middle English word 'Shriven' meaning to go to confession to say sorry
for the wrong things you've done. Lent always starts on a Wednesday, so people went to
confessions on the day before. This became known as Shriven Tuesday and then Shrove Tuesday.

The other name for this day, Pancake Day, comes from the old English custom of using up all the
fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. The
fattening ingredients that most people had in their houses in those days were eggs and milk. A very
simple recipe to use up these ingredients was to combine them with some flour and make
pancakes!
The traditional Bronte School pancake races
took place on Shrove Tuesday, keenly
watched by many parents. Each class from
Kindergarten to Year 6 participated
enthusiastically – flipping their pancakes to
the delight of their friends……..and leaving a
trail of crumbs on the playground for the
hungry birds!

Well done to everyone who took part and a

special thank you to Mrs Egan, Mrs Shand and
Bronte Friends for organising all the prizes.
Looking Ahead:
