Linear Equations with One Variable
(Word Problem About Money)
Definition of Linear Equations with One Variable
A linear equation in one variable is an equation that can be written in the form ax + b = c,
where a, b, and c are real numbers and a ≠ 0.
For example:
2x + 4 =8
How do you solve this kind of equations?
Here’s the process:
(2x + 4) – 4 = 8 – 4 (Substract both sides with -4 to eliminate the +4 in the right side)
2x + (4 – 4) = 8 – 4 (With associative, you can move the brackets in the right side)
2x =4 (Divide both sides with 2 so you can get the x)
x =2
Another example:
To solve this kind of problem, when the coeficcient or the constant are fraction, you
have to find the least common multiply (LCM) of all denominator from fraction in the
equations. And then, you can multiply both sides with the LCM.
We know that the LCM of 6 and 3 is 6. So, the next step is we should multiple both sides
with 6. So the equations will become:
2x + 4x = 18
6x = 18
x =3
2. The cost of a pencil is 10 baht more than the cost of a eraser. If the cost of 8 pencil and 10

The Solution of Student’s worksheet
1. Nickhun bought the stamp, its price is 1,100 baht. So he bought two types of stamps: 3-
baht stamp and 5-baht stamp. And the number of 3-baht stamps are double of 5-baht
stamps. How many stamps does he have of each type?
Solution :
Suppose that the number of 5-baht stamps he bought was x.
And the number of 3-baht stamps he bought was 2x.
Then, the price is 1,100 baht.
So, the equation of this problem is:
5x + 3(2x) = 1100
5x + 6x = 1100
11x = 1100
x = 100
So, he has 3-baht stamps 200 units. And five baht stamps 100 units.
2. The cost of a pencil is 10 baht more than the cost of an eraser. If the cost of 8 pencil and
10 erasers is 170 baht. How much the cost of each?
Solution :
Suppose that the cost of an eraser is x. Then, the cost of a pencil will be x + 10.
The equation of this problem is
8(x + 10) + 10x = 170
8x + 80 + 10x = 170
8x + 10x = 170 – 80
18x = 90
x =5
So, the number of person who got 50 baht gift is 100 person. And the number of person who
got 100 baht gift is 50 person.
