Statistical Measures and Estimations

Exercise 1:

The following data set represents a daily record of the marked prize of 1 barrel oil over 2
months.
83.70, 63.10, 89.80, 82.10, 89.30, 54.80, 73.20, 63.70, 52.90, 77.90, 78.10, 51.40, 72.10,
66.90, 71.70, 60.10, 89.90, 89.10, 81.80, 81.10, 60.20, 77.60, 72.60, 70.40, 55.80, 72.90,
85.30, 80.60, 53.00, 78.00, 74.20, 51.40, 50.80, 79.80, 66.30, 83.60, 81.50, 52.60, 77.50,
82.30, 79.40, 59.70, 81.90, 75.80, 50.10, 69.80, 53.90, 85.30, 75.50, 88.20, 51.10, 76.50,
65.10, 65.10, 69.60, 67.30, 79.90, 79.20, 54.20, 84.30.

a) Set up a frequency distribution of the prices with 5 classes.

b) Change the number of classes to 8

c) Generate a histogram and compare the results.

Exercise 2:

The following set of data represents the monthly interest rates during a year.

0.040, 0.045, 0.170, 0.051, 0.145, 0.100, 0.033, 0.135, 0.062, 0.011, 0.073, 0.014.

Set up a cumulative frequency table with 5 classes and represent the table in an ogive.

Exercise 3:

For the data set below (representing the serum cholesterol levels of 30 individuals), find the
median and the mode. Then organize the data into a frequency distribution with 8 classes.
Use the relative frequencies to draw the respective histogram and the ogive, and sketch the
frequency polygon.

231, 228, 257, 221, 238, 196, 242, 219, 252, 235, 227, 256, 198, 240, 251, 246, 217, 236,
224, 215, 241, 226, 200, 238, 259, 231, 246, 231, 219, 256, 244, 222, 207, 259, 203, 196,
215, 222, 206, 213.
Exercise 4:

The three data sets have the same mean and range, but is the variation the same? Prove
your answer by computing the standard deviation. Assume the data were obtained from
samples.
a) 5,7,9,11,13,15,17. b) 5,6,7,11,15,16,17. c) 5, 5,5,11,17,17,17.
.
Exercise 5:

Find the variance and the standard deviation for the following frequency distribution
representing a sample of a population.

Class Frequency Midpoint

5.5-10.5 1 8
10.5-15.5 2 13
15.5-20.5 3 18
20.5-25.5 5 23
25.5-30.5 4 28
30.5-35.5 3 33
35.5-40.5 2 38

a) Draw a histogram.
b) Calculate the cumulative frequencies.
c) Draw the ogive.
d) Indicate the mean and standard deviation in the histogram.

Exercise 6:

A university course has 3 types of assessment activities, with their contributions to the total
grade being as follows.

Assessment type Weight

Project 30

Quizzes 20

Final exam 50

A student scored 83% in the tests, 76% in the project and 93% in the final exam. Use the
weighted mean to find the student's total grade.
Exercise 7:

Using the weighted mean, find the average number of grams of fat per ounce of meat or fish
that a person would consume over a 5 - day period if he ate these:

Meat or fish Fat (g/oz)

3 oz fried shrimp 3.33

3 oz veal cutlet (broiled) 3.00
2 oz roast beef (lean) 2.50
2.5 oz fried chicken drumstick 4.40
4 oz tuna (canned in oil) 1.75
