WORK PROGRESS
3.0 GENERAL:
Generally, “Internship is any official or formal program to provide practical
experience for beginners in an occupation or profession”.
An internship is a short-term professional experience related to a student‟s major
or career goals. Students generally work a minimum of eight hours per week or a
maximum of 40 hours per week (full time), usually for one academic term. The work is
performed in a professional environment under the guidance and supervision of a staff
member with expertise in the student‟s field of interest.
Through internships, students explore career options, test their choice of academic
major and develop professional skills and experience. Students may participate in
internships for academic credit or for experience only.
3.2.2 EXCAVATION:
Excavation at the site is done by using the heavy excavating equipment like
Hitachi, JCB. As the excavation depth is more hence there, we will get the different kinds
of soils and rocks at different depth levels like normal soil, soft rock and hard rock etc.
The earth is excavated and the excavated material is putted into the hauling equipment‟s
which will takes the earth material and goes to the dumping site and dumps there. The
various hauling equipment‟s used were dumpers and Volvo dump trucks. Volvo man
dump truck is a very strong hauling equipment which costs around 1.5crores. Excavation
of hard rock at the site is done by Blasting and very hard rock by the use of breakers.
3.2.4 COMPACTION:
Compaction is a process of increasin soil desity and removing air, usally by
mechanicalmeans. The following machines are used in our site:
Smooth Wheeled Rollers: It is important euipment for compaction. It consist large steel
drum in front and one or two wheel on rear end. The roller weighing around 10tonns.
Vibratory Plate Compactor: Vibratory plate compactor is used for compacting different
types of soils in narrow and conjusted area where it is not possible to use large
equipment. The compactor of weighing 7tonns and 0.5tonns. The rollers are passed over
the area having less density and less bearing capacity. To increase its density and decrease
the settlement of the structure constructed. After compacting the earth the density and
moisture content in soil is checked by Rapid moisture meter instrument by taking the core
in the different places and then determined. If the reguired density is not achieved then
the number of passings are increased before further works.

PCC can be used over brick flat soling or without brick flat soling. PCC in the
foundations used to provide a plain surface beneath the footing and also to improve
bearing capacity of underlying surface of footing or foundation. Plain cement concrete of
grade M15 is used for the floor. Generally the mix of concrete used for flooring
specification is 1:1.5:3(cement, sand, and stone aggregates) and it laid over the concrete
base (1:4:8), which is almost 3 to 4 inches thick plain cement concrete (pcc) base.
The shuttering materials are used in the site are bracers of 1.2m or 0.9m as a
vertical supports, they are connected bt cup and saws. Plywood of size
2.44m×1.22m×0.012m, U-jack used for holding the horizontal member placed over the
vertical members of depth 70mm. I, C sections are used as horizontal supports of
100mm×60mm. Square tubes of dimention 40mm×40mm. 4/3 runners of length of 2.44m
and 2/3 runner of length 2.8m, 2.4m are used. The column and beams shuttering is
removed after 16hrs after pouring concrete.
Strength of plinth beam concrete shall not be smaller then 20MPa. If concrete is
mixed manually the an extra of 20% cement need to be added to the mixture a minimum
depth ofplinth beamis 200mm whereas its width should match the width of final course of
the foundation. Here M30 grade of concrete is used as per declaration in the plan.
Formwork used for plinth beam construction should be properly installed and
adequately secured prior to concrete placement. The concrete needs to be completed
suffiviently to prevent steel bars from aggressive elements. Steel bars are recommended
to provide two bars will minimum diameter of 12mm at the bottom Of the beam.
Similarly, two bars with minimum diameter of 10mm shall be provided at the top of the
plint beam.
Reinforcement bars should be protected by 25mm concrete cover. As far as
stirrups are concerned, stirrup diameter should be at least 6mm and a spacing of 1cm
should be sufficient. Here in the ongoing project, 20 and 25 diameter bars are provided at
the top and bottom of the beam two 4,8,10 numbers are provided and bottom and top and
8 and 10 diameter bars as stirrups.
Once appointed, Construction Managers are responsible for hiring in the required
number of Carpenters, Painters, Riggers and Plasterers, as well as for coordinating the
purchase of all the necessary materials and tools.
3.4.1 LABORATORY:
Company has provided a well-equipped laboratory for testing the materials
strength, concrete strength by preparing the cubes, strength of coarse aggregates, strength
of fine aggregates etc.
3.4.3 GARAGE:
The facility of garage is also there at the site, as the numbers of vehicles are
working at the site needs a garage for its repair if something happens. The various
vehicles working on the site are excavating equipment‟s, hauling equipment‟s, hoisting
equipment‟s and also machines used in the construction.
The work that whatever is carried out at the site is well maintained in the Excel
files in the computer by the site engineer. The records are also maintained for the
concrete consumption, quantity of steel used etc.
The quality check at the site is done by the government engineers, consultancy and
as well as the company peoples too.
Maintenance of the store room includes the maintenance of the equipment‟s used
in the construction and keeping the record. Store room contains mainly the costly
equipment‟s like vibrators and electrical equipment‟s.
Safety at the site is a must thing for the both technical and non-technical peoples
over the site; hence a safety engineer use to maintain the safety works at the site.

REFLECTION NOTES
CHAPTER - 5
CONCLUSION
The main aim of studies within this project was to investigate how a structure is
constructed within its desired properties. We got to know about the basic & advanced
techniques of building construction as well as the challenges which a civil engineer has
to face during construction.
Overall it must be said that the construction methods and quality control on a
project needs a very good coordination and large quantities of man power, equipment
and funds. During the period of 36 days all the site and office staff helped us a lot to
provide all the information about any query. So, we are grateful to KNK Construction
Pvt. Ltd. for giving us the opportunity to learn and grow.
