Development and History of Taekwondo in the Philippines

Taekwondo was introduced to the Philippines through the efforts of Kim Bok Man and
Young Man Park. Grand Master Bok Man Kim arrived in 1970 to continue Park's legacy of
propagating Taekwondo upon the invitation of President Marcos. Bok Man Kim continued to
pioneer Taekwondo worldwide and left the Philippines in 1971. In 1975, Sung-Chon Hong came to
the Philippines to continue to introduce Taekwondo again. The Philippine Taekwondo Association
(PTA) has been established by Grand Master Sung-Chon Hong. The current Central Headquarters
of the PTA is at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex. The PTA is a member of the Kukkiwon, World
Taekwondo Federation, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and Asian
Taekwondo Union. Sung-Chon Hong has devoted decades to mentoring, developing and
promoting Taekwondo nationwide and worldwide, and is popularly considered the Father of
Taekwondo in the Philippines.

It is “one of the most systematic and scientific Korean traditional martial arts that teaches
more than physical fighting skills,” says the World Taekwondo Federation on its website. “It is a
discipline that shows ways of enhancing our spirit and life through training our body and mind.”
Taekwondo is among the sports featured in the 2012 Palarong Pambansa in Lingayen, Pangasinan
from May 6 to 12.

The word taekwondo itself points to its main characteristics. It comes from the Korean
terms “tae,” which means to strike using the feet; “kwon,” which means to strike with the fist; and
“do,” which means way or discipline. The WTF defines taekwondo as “the right way of using all
parts of the body to stop fights and help to build a better and more peaceful world.” Taekwondo
is different from other oriental martial arts, according to the WTF, because it uses more foot skills
and its physical movements are aligned with the mind and “life as a whole.”

The Philippine Taekwondo Association was formally organized in 1976 under the leadership of
Grandmaster Sung Chon Hong, a 9th can Black belt and a former Korean champion.Through the
years, Taekwondo has flourished in the Philippines. It's network spans 19 regions, with respective
Regional Management Committees tasked to develop the premier Olympic martial art sport all
over the archipelago. The PTA’s vision is a nation with dynamic citizenry through the influence and
motivation of Taekwondo as a martial art, science and sport.
