GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR CONSTRUCTION AND TESTING MATERIAL LABORATORY

 ALWAYS wear safety glasses or a face shield when doing any operation that may endanger your eyes
 When cut or injured, report it at once to the instructor.
 Horseplay such as playing and running around will not be permitted.
 Don’t talk or bother any person who is operating a power machine.
 Never use power tools or any power equipment without securing instructor’s permission first.
 Be thoughtful and helpful towards other students in the class.
 When lifting heavy objects, have someone help you and lift with your arms and let muscles to avoid back inj
uries.
 Store and stack your project work carefully in assigned areas.
 No more than four students should work on one wood bench at a time.
 Apply and handle finishing materials only in approved areas and disposeof oily rags and other
Combustible materials immediately or store them in an approved container.
 Keep the floor free of nails, sawdust, and wood scraps to keep from slipping.
 Water or oil should be wiped up immediately if split.
 Carry cutting tools with the sharp edge down.
 Only use a tool for the sole purpose for that which it was designed.
 Always keep vises closed when not in use and the vise handles in a vertical position.
 Never leave a machine running when not in use.
 Report any tool or machine that is out of order to the instructor.
 Whenever possible, mount the work in a vise, clamp,or special holder especially when using chisle gouges,o
r portable electric tools.
 Hold a tool in the correct position while using it and make sure the cutting motion is away from yourself and
other students.
 Never allow edged or pointed tools to extend out over the edge of the bench.
 Before starting a machine, make sure all safety shields are in place.
 Don’t wear loose clothing around machinery.
 It is advisable to weara shop apron that is snugly tied, but if none are available roll up loose sleeves and tuc
k in loose clothing.
 Long, loose hair must be tied back so that it will not get caught in the machinery.
 No student will be allowed to operate any machine until he has been instructed on its proper use.

3.Discussion:

Fine aggregates are small size filler materials in construction. While Coarse aggregates are larger
size filler materials in construction.
The bulk density or unit weight of sand and gravel is the mass or weight of the sand and gravel that
required to fill a container of a specified unit volume.Unit in kg/m3 or lb/ft3.

4.Resources:

4
 Gravel
 Sand
 Potable water
 Weighing Scale

 Metal Container
 Tamping Rod

5.Procedure:

For fine aggregates:

1. Make 3 closed cylindrical paper container with 1 in.diameter and 2 in.height.Fill each container with sand.
2. Measure the mass of each cylinder.
3. In measuring the volume, fill a graduate cylinder with 600 ml water then put one cylinder.Read the final volume.R
step for the other cylinders.Get the difference of final volume and initial volume for the volume of each cylinder
4. Compute for the density:

5. Get the average density then compute for unit weight of the aggregate:

For coarse aggregates:

1. Fill the metal measure one-third full with gravel.
2. Rod the layer of aggregate with 25 strokes.(Do not allow the rod to strike the bottom of the measure)

7.Conclusion:
In this laboratory activity, we conducted an experiment to determine the density of fine aggregate (Sand

we get the difference between them.By that we can compute for the density of sand and we did that in 3 tr
compute the density for gravel by getting first its mass and volume. We also compute for the unit weight of sand a
Based on the data gathered, the sand is more heavy than the gravel. Also, sand is more dense than gravel.

should be used to fill the mold.
5. Fill the mold with 1/3 sample using a scoop and tamp it 25 times to ensure the distribution of
samples.
6. Fill it again with another 1/3 sample and tamp again 25 times.
7. Fully fill the cylindrical mold.Further distribute the concrete by use of a tamping rod prior to
consolidation.
8. After consolidation, finish the top surfaces by striking them off with the tamping rod where the
consistency of the concrete permits,or with a wood float or trowel.

C. CURING
1. During the first 24 to 48 hours after molding, all test specimens shall be stored under conditions
representative of the concrete in the structure or pavement.Cure the specimens by putting it
under water.Cure the 4 specimens for 28 days,another 4 for 14 days,and last 4 for 7 days.

Experiment No.8
COMPRESSIVE AND FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF WOOD
1.Objective(s):
The activity aims to be able to determine the compressive and flexural stress of wood.

2.Intended Learning Outcomes(ILOs):

The students shall be able to:
 Know how to determine the compressive and flexural strength of wood.
 Determine the relevance of compressive and flexural strength of wood in civil engineering field..
 Apply the techniques and skills in determining the compressive and flexural strength of wood to
professional engineering practice
3.Discussion:

4.Resources:

 4–2 in.x 4 in.x 8 ft.wood(different kind)

 Crosscut saw
 Universal Testing Machine(UTM)
 Measuring tape/ruler.
5.Procedure:

COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH TESTING:

1. Cut three pieces with 8 in.length samples from each kind of wood.
2. With the help of the laboratory technicians, set the UTM in compression.
3. Place the wood sample perpendicularly in the machine and begin testing.
4. Once the testing is done, record the results.
5. Repeat test for the other 2 wood samples.
6. Compute for compressive strength of each wood using the formula:

FLEXURAL STRENGTH TESTING:

1. Cut another three pieces of samples with 22 in.length.

2. With the help of the laboratory technicians, set the UTM for flexural testing at 3 point
3. Place the wood sample perpendicularly in the machine and begin testing.

24
4. Once the testing is done, record the results.
5. Repeat test for the other 2 wood samples.
6. Compute for compressive strength of each wood using the formula:

Where:

F–average load at failure(N)

L–length of sample(mm)

b–width of sample(mm)

d–depth of sample(mm)
