    LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE 10

    January 7-8, 2019

    I. OBJECTIVES
    At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to perform the following with
    at least 85% proficiency:
    a. Define population and population density;
    b. Identify the factors that can cause a population’s size to change; and
    c. Differentiate exponential and logistic growth.

    II. SUBJECT MATTER


    A. Topic: The Ups and Downs of Population Growth
    B. References:
     Science 10 Learner’s Material
     Science 10 Teacher’s Guide and Science 10 Curriculum Guide
    C. Materials:
     Manila paper, graphs
    D. Values Infused:
     Alertness, Intellectual Honesty, creativity

    III. PROCEDURE
    A. Motivation
    Have you seen monitoring groups who supervise the number of organisms in
    many populations?
    Why do they do these?
    Why should we care if the number of organisms in area is increasing or
    decreasing?

    B. Development
    1. Start by defining population and population density. Include here birth rate and
    death rate, the basic reasons behind why a population increases or decreases.
    2. Then, ask questions to students related to birth and death rates.
     The human population is currently growing at an exponential rate. How can
    this be explained in terms of birth and death rates?
     The monkey-eating eagle is considered as an endangered species. What does
    this mean in terms of the birth and the death rate of monkey eating eagles?
    3. Afterwhich, introduce the two general factors affecting population’s growth, the
    density-independent factors and density-dependent factors.
    4. Show a graph to students. Let them analyze and give a follow-up question about
    the graph.
    5. Differentiate exponential and logistic growth. For better understanding, show a
    graph differentiating the two.

    C. Generalization
    What is population? Population density?
    What are the factors that can cause a population’s size to change?
    Differentiate them.
    Differentiate exponential growth from logistic growth.

    D. Application
    Group students into five for the BOWL QUIZ related to the topic.

    IV. EVALUATION
    A. Fill- in the differences of the terms in the chart below:

    B. Read each situation below. Identify if it is a density-independent or density-dependent


    limiting factor.
    1. Mrs. Rosales has 55 students in her biology class, but she has room for 50.
    Because the room was crowded, the 5 students were asked to go to the curriculum
    chairperson to change their schedule.
    2. Dinoflagellates in Laguna de Bay increase in population due to increase in
    organic substance in the body of water brought by water pollution.
    3. The oil spill in Cavite area harmed many aquatic organisms in the vicinity.
    4. A new strain of dengue virus breaks out in the country.
    5. Super typhoon Yolanda caused many residents to leave Leyte.

    V. ASSIGNMENT
    Enumerate the limiting factors that depend on population density.
