Emergency overview : Corrosive. Irritates skin, eyes and respiratory tract. May be harmful by ingestion.
Health Effects – Acute
Swallowed : Considered harmful if ingested. Can cause severe irritation of the mouth and throat due to
alkalinity. Surfactant content is likely to cause nausea, vomiting and gastric pain.
Eye : Irritant. Contact is painful; and prolonged contact may damage the eye.
Skin : Irritant. Prolonged exposure can cause defatting of the skin and subsequent irritation and
itching.
Inhaled : Not expected to be a hazard due to low vapour pressure.
Chronic : Repeated contact can cause defatting of the skin and industrial dermatitis
Swallowed : Do NOT induce vomiting. Give 1 to 2 glasses of water or milk followed by a raw egg.
Transport patient to a doctor or hospital.
Eye : Hold affected eye open and flush with running water for at least 15 minutes. Seek medical
attention.
Skin : Remove contaminated clothing and wash affected area well with water. Launder clothing
before reuse.
Inhaled : Remove patient to fresh air and keep warm and rested.
Advice to doctor : Treat symptomatically.
Contain large spills and prevent from entering drains or watercourses. Absorb on inert material such as sand or
vermiculite. Collect in clean labelled containers for disposal.
Disposal : Follow all federal and local regulations for disposal
Storage Requirements : Store according to DG Class 8 requirements. Store in suitable labelled containers. Keep
containers tightly closed when not in use and when empty. Protect from damage. Store in
a cool, dry, well-ventilated area, out of direct sunlight. Store away from incompatible
materials.
Handling Procedures and Equipment : Follow routine safe handling procedures.
High pH. Alkalinity of undiluted or unneutralised material (pH >8.5) is harmful to aquatic life.
SECTION 13 - DISPOSAL
Disposal : Follow all federal, state and local regulations for disposal. Use only licensed disposal and
waste hauling companies. Disposal of small amounts of spilled material may be handled
as described under “Leak or Spill Cleanup”. Large spills must be dealt with separately
and must be handled by qualified disposal companies.
