    Q1. What is insulating oil?


    Ans: Insulating oil is an oil that is stable at high temperatures and has excellent
    electrical insulating properties.
    Insulating oil in a transformer is a medium of insulation between
    transformer windings and the main tank of the transformer in which the
    transformer windings are housed.
    Q2. Name petroleum-based transformer oils
    Ans: Petroleum based transformer oils are as follows: -
    a) Naphthenic oil
    b) Paraffinic oil
    Q3. Enlist electrical properties of insulating oil
    Ans: Electrical properties of insulating oil are as follows: -
    a) Dielectric strength
    b) Specific Resistance
    c) Dielectric dissipation factor
    Q4. What are the causes of deterioration of insulating oils?
    Ans: Causes of deterioration of insulating oils are as follows: -
     Absorption of moisture
    When load variations occur transformer oil expands and contracts due to
    heating and cooling of transformer oil respectively. Each time this happens
    breathing action takes place and if oil inhales moist air while breathing
    moisture will be absorbed in the oil thereby increasing its water content and
    reducing resistivity hence Deteriorating insulating oil consequently.
     Formation of Sludge
    Transformer working continuously undergoes continuous heating due to
    which the insulating materials such as varnishes, paper insulation etc gets
    decomposed and dissolves in the oil and forms a sticky compound called
    sludge. Which further results in reduction of heat dissipation capacity of oil
    hence Deteriorating insulating oil consequently.
     Formation of Acids
    Due to combined effect of heat, dissolution of varnishes and cellulose
    formation of inorganic and organic acids takes place in transformer oil
    thereby increasing its acidity. Further increase in acidity results in reduction
    of Resistivity and Dielectric strength of the transformer oil and deterioration
    consequently.

    Ans: Visual inspection of oil sample decides the quality of transformer oil
    based on its colour appearance which is given as follows: -
    Colour Oil Quality
    Pale yellow Very Good condition
    Yellow Good condition
    Light Brown Bad condition
    Dark Brown Very Bad condition
    Black Discardable
