Consultation summary

My client has come in today for a manicure with normal, dark polish.
They have had this treatment before and enjoyed it, especially the
hand and arm massage. They have no contra-indications present so all
treatments can be done. The client has no polish on their nails now.

They are expecting to have a relaxing treatment and to have nice

manicured nails that are shaped in a rounded shape. They find the
condition of their nails to be not great as a few nails do not have a
smooth surface, with chips on the nail plate. Some nails are shorter
than the others and they have ridges in their nails. They find that their
nails naturally curve over the tip of their fingers.

The skin on their hands can be quite dry but they try to apply lotion on
them in the day after they wash them to make them softer. They never
exfoliate their hands and do not apply any masks, just lotion. They do
not notice their cuticles and say they do not grow very much and so
they never push them back trim them.

They get their nails painted with normal polish every couple of weeks
usually. They think their nails get damaged from doing chores in the
house like washing up and they never wear gloves when they do this.
They do gardening and often do not wear gloves so this can make their
nails dirty and also scratch the skin on their hands.

They are happy for me to exfoliate their hands and are not allergic to
any ingredients in products so I can use a lotion to do the hand and
arm massage. They have no questions before we begin.

Full treatment plan including justification

I will be wearing my uniform and no jewellery, with my hair tied up. I will set up my
table so the client can sit opposite me. The products I will use will be laid out on the
table in the order I am using them in to save time. I will take enough lotion and
exfoliator that I will use on the client from the bottles using a spatula and put them
in a small bowl so I am not dipping in and out of the product, for hygiene reasons
so not to cross contaminate the product. I will be using clean towels under the
clients hands and to dry their hands with. All of the manicure tools will be sterilised
before the treatment and I will keep them in a sterilising solution throughout.

I will make sure the area is clean and tidy before the client arrives and everything is
set up to avoid wasting any time during the treatment. I will make sure there are no
hazards such as trailing wires or wet surfaces, to comply with the Health and
Safety at Work Act. I will do this by carrying out a risk assessment before the client
arrives. I will make sure the room is well lit so I can see what I am doing and that
the room is well ventilated so the fumes from the products do not get breathed in
by myself or the client. I will play relaxing music to help the client feel relaxed.

I will begin by greeting the client and taking their coat. I will ask if they can remove
any jewellery and store it safely away. They can take a seat and I will check if they
are comfortable. I will wash my hands and fill up two manicure bowls with warm
water and cuticle soak at the sink. Then I will place the bowls down either side of
the towel in front of the client and sit opposite the client. I will be keeping my back
straight throughout so I do not strain my back or reach over the client. I will roll the
clients sleeves up and, if they like, I can place tissues in the sleeves so I do not get
product on their clothes. I will sterilise the client’s hands and start by examining
their hands for any contra-indications, then, with nail polish remover on new cotton
pads, I will remove any traces of old nail polish on all the nails.

Then I will shape the nails into a round shape on the left hands with a nail file, filing
in one direction so I do not weaken the nail. I will check with the client they are
happy with the shape before I move on to the next hand. Then I will apply a small
amount of cuticle massage cream to each nail using a small spatula, massage it in
and place the left hand into the manicure bowl to so while I repeat the steps to the
right hand. Once I have shaped the nails on the right hand and placed it into the
bowl, I will remove the left hand and dry it with a clean towel. I will then apply
cuticle remover with a clean spatula to each nail and use a sterile cuticle pusher to
gently push back the cuticles in circular movements, then with sterile cuticles
nippers I will trim the cuticles. I will repeat this to the other hand.
Full treatment plan including justification

I then will exfoliate the hands one after the other gently to desquamate and soften
the skin on the hands and slightly up the arm. We will both stand up and go to the
sink where we will rinse out hands, I will empty and remove the manicure bowls at
this time so they are out of the way of the client as I will not use these again. We
will sit back down and I will dry the client’s hands. Using a spatula I will take the
lotion in my hands, warm it up and then apply it to the client’s hands with a hand
and arm massage to relax them and make the skin softer. With nail polish remover
on cotton pads, I will squeak the nails to remove the oils from the lotion, ready for
the base coat.

I will apply the base coat to the nails on the left and right hand before moving on to
the colour, making sure each coat has enough time to dry in between so that the
polish does not chip. If necessary I will apply two coats of the colour and then wait
for this to dry and apply a clear top coat to seal it and prevent chipping. I will take
the polish over the free edge which will also stop the polish from chipping at the
edge. I will finish by helping the client to roll their sleeves down and helping them
with their belongings. Then we will discuss after care and recommendations.
Recommendations and aftercare

I have recommended to the client to avoid any activity which can chip the
polish for the next 24 hours. If they need to do any chores involving their
hands they should always wear gloves to protect their nails and hands.

They should avoid very harsh chemicals on their hands as this can be
damaging to their nails and skin and cause irritation. They should come back
regularly when the polish starts to grow out or if they would like a different
colour and so we can maintain the nail shape.

If they want to file the nails at home they should not use a metal nail file as
these are damaging to the nail. I have recommended that they apply lotion
or masks to the hands in day and at night to keep the nails and skin healthy
and soft. They can also try a cuticle oil to nourish them.

Personal performance:

I think the treatment went well and I am happy with the nails and the client
seemed happy too. My performance has got a lot better and I only got the
polish on the skin of one of the nails so did not need to clean up very much. I
am happy I have learned how to bevel the nail because before I was finding
that after I shaped the nail and took it out of the manicure bowl, part of the
nail under the free edge would stick out and need to be file again.

Time keeping and organisation:

I managed to do the manicure and whole routine in one hour which I think is
a commercially viable time for a manicure. I did not feel like I was rushing
and I was able to spend enough time painting the nails and allowed enough
time for drying in-between coats. I think the fact I had all of my tools and
products laid out and organised next to me helped me to focus on the client
more and saved time.

Communication skills:

I think the communication was good because the outcome of the nails is
what the client asked for during the consultation as they got the colour and
the shape they wanted. I checked if the client was comfortable during the
treatment and was checking to see they were happy with what I was doing.

Areas I can improve on:

When I am offering the colours to the client, I need to make sure they are all
okay to use because this nail polish was almost finished which meant it took
a bit longer to get the polish to coat the whole brush. When I was trying to
get the polish on the brush, this wasted a bit of time. I do not think this
shows in the end result because the polish looks smooth. Sometimes when I
file the nails, part of the nail underneath does not file so I need to remember
to bevel the edge of the nails on both hands before I put them in the
manicure bowl to soak. Because I only remembered for one hand and had to
file them a bit again once I took them out the bowl.
