    FACTORS THAT AFFECT POPULATION GROWTH

    1. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT – Population growth tends to have high rates in well


    develop economy especially on agricultural based societies where children are seen as
    potential income earners. In societies without state pensions, parents often want more
    children to act as insurance for their old age and often expected to look after them when
    they get old.

    2. IMMIGRATION LEVELS- Some countries biggest drivers of population growth come


    from net migration. 50% of net population growth came from net international migration
    in the UK from 2000 to 2003.

    3. AVAILABILITY OF FAMILY PLANNING- In the developing world, the availability


    of contraception is more limited, and this can lead to unplanned pregnancies and more
    rapid population growth.

    FACTORS THAT DECREASE POPULATION

    1. EDUCATION- Aware society decreases population growth with the availability of


    contraception enabling people to limit family size closer to the desired level.

    2. GEOGRAPHY- Survival rate in different places are affected by climate change, limited
    sources of food, and catastrophic disasters.
    3. SOCIAL AND CULTURAL FACTORS- India and China had strong social
    attachments to having large families. In the developed world, smaller families are the
    norm.
