IMPACT OF USING SOCIAL MEDIA TOWARDS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

OF GRADE 11 SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

IN SAINT AUGUSTINE INSTITUTE

INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

The world has been changed rapidly by the evolution of Technology.


Modern technology can bring a negative and positive sides. Nowadays, social
networking made an enormous change in the lifestyle of individuals around the
globe. It has already a huge contribution in the daily social routine of the people
in various types of communities. All class such as (high, middle and low) society is
now into social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Messenger, etc. Social
Media is about collaborating, networking, sharing and generating knowledge and
content (Priyanka Gupta, 2015).

These social networking sites played a big part to the global community
in terms of communication purposes. Some use these sites for gaining friends, for
engaging in relationship and for gaming purposes. But what really matter today is
the way of students using networking sites of social media. Social media plays an
important role in every student's life. Social media can be helpful among students
in the sense that they will used it in the right such as in research and other
educational purposes.
With so many social networking sites displayed on the internet;
students attempt to abandon their homework and reading times in preference
chatting online with friends. They use it for sexual and intimacy purposes. Some
use it for gambling purposes. Misuse of such sites are what makes the social
networking world hazardous and may affect all the people involved on it
especially to students of minor ages. And lastly, the use of social media really
affects one's life whether be in their social aspect, privacy, health and
performance in school.

According to Wikipedia (2013), Academic Performance is the outcome


of education. It is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has
achieved their educational goals. Academic performance, which is measured by
the examination results, is one of the major goals of a school. A direct relationship
exists between social media usage and the academic performance of students in
school. However, the darker side within technological evolution has resulted in
dilemmas such as the seat back of real values of life especially among students
who form the majority users interacting through the use of social networking
sites.

This study aims to know the purpose of Grade 11 Senior High school
students in Saint Augustine Institute in using social media and how this social
media usage affects their academic performances either positively or negatively.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to identify the impact of the use of social media to
the academic performance of the students. This study will seek to answer the
following question:

1. What are the profile of the respondents?

a. Track or Strand

2. What is the percentage of the students who use social media for the following:

a. Social Connectivity

b. Entertainment

c. Information Gaining

3. What are the negative and positive impacts of the usage of social media to the
students?

4. How does the usage of social media affects the academic performance of the
students?

HYPOTHESIS

Ho1. There is a relationship between the usage of social media and the academic
performance of the students.
SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The importance of this study will redound for the society to push
changes in the usage of social media. The result will benefit the following:

Students. The result of this study will surely partake in informing the students
particularly in Saint Augustine Institute that overusing social media will have a
great impact on their lives, and these effects would either be positive or negative
depending on their means of using the social media. Students will then change
their time schedules in using social media platforms responsibly.

Parents. The outcome of this study will take part in informing the parents of the
community to monitor the time that their children use for social media.
