1.6 SPECIAL AWARDS AND RECOGNISATION
Madison Media won the media duties worth Rs.20 Crore of the well-
known snacks brand, Balaji Wafers. The company’s media account was
put up for a multi-agency pitch for the first time ever. Balaji Snacks and
Namkeen will focus essentially on the print advertising. Madison
Media has been winning the media duties back to back as a few days
earlier it had won the media and digital mandate worth Rs 500crore of the
health and beauty giant, Marico.
Balaji Wafers and Namkeen is a household name especially in Gujarat for
its potato chips and variety of other savouries. The company started
by Virani brothers back in 1974 currently holds for 70% share in the
market of snacks.

2. HISTORY OF ORGANISATION
2.1 MAIN HISTORY
Balaji company started in 1976 by the members of Virani Group, when
Chandubhai and his brothers Bhikhubhai and Kanubhai migrated from a
small village Dhun Dhoraji, Jamnagar district of Gujarat. Their father
Popatbhai Virani was a farmer, who sold ancestral agriculture land and
gave Rs. 20,000 to them to venture into business.
The Virani’s invested in farm equipment, but could not succeed and lost
the money. Kakubhai and his brothers started a wafer business from a
canteen of a cinema hall in Rajkot in 1974. Until 1989, the wafers were
produced at the Virani's house and distributed in and around Rajkot city.
Supplying wafers and namkeen of local brands to the patrons of Astron
cinema, Rajkot due to the short supply of that product hey decided to
make their own products line in year 1982.
By the retail success they inspired to set a semi-automatic plant. Instead
of preparing wafers the traditional trying methods this semi-automatic
plant boosted the quality taste and more sales also. The tame of taste
reached to the whole Gujarat hence. It was time take over the whole
Gujarat so the biggest automatic plant of Gujarat came into the picture,
quenching the demand of Gujarat.

Balaji Wafers Private Limited is a Non-govt company, incorporated on 22
Sep, 1995. It's a private unlisted company and is classified as 'company
limited by shares'.
ADVANTAGES:
Member's liability is restricted to the number of shares they own.
They have limited liability.
Additional capital can easily be raised by selling shares.
The company can continue to trade even if one of its member’s
dies.
Shares can be bought and sold with director's approval.

BALAJI WAFERS PVT LTD uses mainly a semi automated technology for
their better and fast production. So that they can reach to their customers
as early as possible and can also fulfil their demands easily. Balaji Wafers
is constantly striving to upgrade its technological strengths with latest
machinery and processes. The aim is to manufacture the best possible
product, with an eye towards “green” practices and smoother work
systems for the staff.
The company was among the first to install a fully automated plant in
Gujarat.

6.5 MEASURES TAKEN TO CONTROL POLLUTION
Hazardous/Solid Waste Management
Entire quantity of hazardous waste will be handled and disposed as per
Hazardous & Other Wastes (Management & Transboundary Movement)
Rules’2016. Salt from evaporator will be disposed to secured TSDF site
for landfilling; discarded containers/barrels will be sold to authorized
recyclers. Used oil will be sold to CPCB approved recyclers. The unit has
provided isolated area with impervious flooring for the storage of
hazardous waste. Thus, hazardous waste management system provided
by the unit is adequate.
Water pollution
The company uses the wasted water in garden and also for the farms in
their area of the factory also. The unit has provided Rain water harvesting
system within the plant, for capacity of 100 Kl underground tank. During
the rainy days, they will first use rain water for process and utilities and
only balance water use form ground water source. Further, unit is using
this water for manufacturing process. So, by this we can say that the
company’s wastage of water is very less.

8.1 MARKETING POSITION
Balaji's share of the local potato and vegetable chips market grew to
13.7% in 2012, from 9.5% in 2008, according to Euromonitor. Balaji also
dominates in the western market with a share of 71%. In its home state
Gujarat, it has a share of 90%. Economic Times recognized Balaji
Wafers as 'Sultan of Wafers'.
Balaji do not advertise its products nor run any retail schemes or
promotions to sell their products. Instead of misspending on superficial
aspects like packaging and design which does not really benefit either
the company or the consumer, Balaji believes in investing on ensuring
that fresh and quality products reach the market.
Balaji does not use artificial flavor’s in its snacks and prefers to use
local spices which give a made-at-home taste to its snacks.
Balaji has affordable price unlike other popular brands almost 50%
less, despite of in cost bearing process like engaging in research,
sustainability, product innovation and new manufacturing techniques
this all is possible as Balaji makes good use of freely available
resources like water and air, it makes biogas (worth approximately 15-

20 lacs) to use in the canteen by treating waste water from the plant,
generates electricity worth 25-30 lacs which is used in the plant.
Benefits from these savings are transferred to the consumer. Apart
from all this, Balaji also concentrates on ensuring that it maintains good
relations with distributors & retailers who give the brand good visibility
at the point of sale.

9 HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
9.1 NUMBER OF WORKERS
The total number of workers in Balaji Wafers PVT LTD is around 5000
persons currently.
In this company there are mainly two type of works i.e. at operating
level & managerial level is and the basic of received candidate and at an
operating level the selection of workers in on basic of skilled & unskilled
worker.

Balaji Pvt. Ltd. accompaniers on the job training so here training is
done very smoothly and the workers gets trained and performs uniformly.
Development rings the growth of the personality help individuals in the
progress towards maturity.
Balaji Company provides most of daily wages and some workers are
provided monthly basis. It also gives bonus to the workers on festivals
such as Diwali loan with the wages.
The employee can also be dismissed for his fault. It the employee
opposes any rule then company either punishes or dismisses him.
Although Balaji Pvt Ltd. Company is having 5000 workers total here
are no trade unions. They work very co-operatively and try that do not
arise. They talk directly with the top manager, if they are having any
query.

10.1 QUALITY ASSURANCE TECH
“The Valsad unit that produces potato chips at present would also
manufacture snack products with capacity of almost 12 tonnes an hour,
which would take the production capacity of the plant to 24 tonnes an
hour. The company aims to invest Rs 50 crore for capacity expansion,”
added Virani.
The company claims to enjoy a 70 per cent market share in Gujarat while
it has 10, 15 and 5 per cent share in Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya
Pradesh respectively. To cater the growing demand in Maharashtra, the
company has set up a plant in Valsad with an investment of Rs 100 crore.
While commenting on the Valsad plant, Virani added that the production
capacity of some of the multinational companies Is 18 tonnes an hour,
while the Valsad facility produces 22 tonne wafers an hour.

“With an aim to introduce new food products in line with changing
lifestyle, the company is going to launch corn chips. We would invest Rs 5
crore to launch the product,” says Virani.
“To launch corn chips and other products the company needs to upgrade
its packaging unit. The company would set up the new packaging facility
with investment to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore. Besides, the company has
also invested Rs 5 crore to set up a food laboratory for product testing,”
said Virani. He added that such a laboratory would also be set up very
soon in the Valsad plant.
Talking about the bio-gas plant that would use the waste of potato chips
production facility, Virani said, “This plant would be operational within six
months. The wastage of the Valsad plant be used to produce bio-gas.
With commissioning of the plant, the company expects to get at least 300
cubic meters gas an hour.”

Balaji has a large no. Of distributors, so due this they cannot directly
know about the changing tastes and wants of the customers. It they
directly do marketing, and then they can easily satisfy their customers
more.
