TDR9100

Quick Start Guide

This Quick Start Guide shows how to use a TDR9100 test set to make a basic timing
measurement of an off-line circuit breaker.

Safety Requirements
Do not skip this information!
• Always follow your own company safety rules and government safety regulations.
• During setup, always connect test leads to the TDR9100 first while leaving the free
ends lying on the ground. Then connect the free ends to the circuit breaker.
• When taking down a test setup, first remove the test leads from the circuit breaker
and lay them on the ground. Then remove the connectors from the TDR9100.
• Always connect the system protective ground first, before making any other
connections; always disconnect it last.
• Do not service the TDR9100; refer all servicing to qualified personnel only.

Step 1: Make Connections to the TDR9100

1. De-energize the breaker under test and isolate it from the system.
2. Establish a common grounding point for the breaker and the TDR9100.
3. Ground the breaker.
4. Ground the TDR9100, using the safety ground cable provided in the Doble bag.
5. Connect the power supply cable to the TDR9100 and power up.
6. Wait a full two minutes, even if the System OK LED is illuminated at some time during
that time period. After the two minutes are up, connect the TDR9100 to the PC using
the provided Ethernet crossover cable.
7. Click the Instrument tab.
• Select the Search for network-connected instruments check box.
• If the TDR9100 does not appear in the list, click Search for Instruments to
communicate with the TDR9100.
8. Select your TDR9100 from the list and click Verify Connection.
9. Connect test leads to the instrument while leaving the free ends lying on the ground.
10. Connect the remote safety switch to the instrument.
11. If required, connect the Trip/Close control cable to the instrument.

Step 2: Make Connections to the Circuit Breaker

1. Make the appropriate connections at the mechanism breaker cabinet.
2. Connect the free ends of the primary test leads to the circuit breaker. Note that the OCB
cable connector is the left most of the upper set of main contact connectors.

Step 3: Install Motion Transducers (If Required)

Step 4: Run the Test

1. To run a test, basic breaker information is required. Open an existing test plan or create
a new test plan. Enable the channels to be used for the test.
2. From the Breaker or Test Plan tab, click Run Test. Select a test to perform from the
displayed list. Click OK.
3. Follow all instructions presented on the screen. Observe status updates, prompts, and
error messages. If test configuration errors are reported, correct them and retry the test.
4. When the warning beeper sounds, press and hold the remote safety switch. The beep
becomes a constant tone. When the tone stops, the test is complete. Release the
switch. Results appear on the Results and Plot tabs. The data is saved automatically.

Step 5: Take Down the Test Setup

When testing is complete, disassemble the test setup in this order:
1. Remove all test leads from the apparatus and lay them on the ground.
2. Remove the test leads from the TDR9100.
3. Disconnect the TDR9100 from the PC.
4. Disconnect the power cable from the TDR9100.
5. Remove the grounding cable from the TDR9100.
