If required take the specific heat of steam between 0.01 bar and 1 bar as Cps = 2.1 kJ/kgK,
Cp water = 4.187 kJ/kgK, Cp air = 1.005 kJ/kgK

QUESTION 1

Majuba power station is reported to be operating optimally with three closed feed water
heaters. Steam enters the turbine at 13.5 MPa and 580C and leaves at 6 kPa. The
isentropic efficiency of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd stage of the turbine is 85% and feed water
flows through the pump isentropically. Steam leaves the condenser as a saturated
liquid. If the moisture content of the steam at exit of the turbine is not to exceed 5%
Evaluate approximate values of isentropic efficiency of the 4th stage of the turbine, the
mass of steam used for feed heating in each feed heater and the thermal efficiency of
the plant. State any assumptions made.

Demonstrate your understanding of the effect of irreversibilities on the efficiency of a
Rankine cycle.

QUESTION 2
It is a well known fact that the basic Rankine cycle has a low thermal efficiency.
Demonstrate 3 ways you would employ to improve the efficiency of a Rankine cycle.
Elaborate on how likely the efficiency would be increased by these methods despite
the fact that they bring about undesirable effects.

Your internet search on Lethabo power station reveals that the design consists
essentially of a large tubular-walled furnace, a steam drum, an economiser, a
superheater and a re-heater. You further gather that Lethabo power plant has a
maximum continuous rating of the boiler as 510 kg/s of steam generating a pressure
of 17 MPa and 550 °C. The steam is reheated to the initial temperature entering the
HP turbine before expanding in the LP turbine. The average temperature of steam in
the condenser is 39C. All turbine stages have isentropic efficiencies of 85 percent
and all pumps have isentropic efficiencies of 60 percent. Arrange the equipment in the
plant for optimum performance and estimate the thermal efficiency and power
generated. State any assumptions made.

QUESTION 3

Steam at a pressure of 17 bar (1.7 MPa) and 0.85 dry is supplied to a steam engine
and is throttled to the engine pressure of 10 bar as it passes through the inlet valves.
In the engine it does work while expanding according to the law pv = constant until it
exits the engine at a pressure of 0.7 bar. Evaluate the final condition of steam, work
done during the expansion process and the interchange of heat between the steam
and the cylinder walls stating its direction. Take Cp of superheated steam as
2.1 kJ/kg K. Also estimate the change in entropy for the process during which the
steam does work in the engine.
