B. Performance Standard
The learner writes a 1000- word critique of a selected text on the basis of its claim/s, context, and properties as a
written material.
C. Learning Competencies/ Objectives
Identifies claims explicit or implicitly made in a written text
EN 11/12 RWS-IIIij-6
D. Specific Learning Outcomes
At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to:
1. Determine the explicit and implicit information/claim in a given text.
2. Write the explicit and implicit information/claim in a given text/ picture.

II. SUBJECT MATTER

III. PROCEDURES
A. Activity
 Preliminary Activities
Drill on how to read commonly mispronounced words.
 Activity Proper
Presentation of the Lesson
B. Analysis
o As a group, let the students fill in the given table. The pictures on the activity will be their basis for them
to be able to fill in the table. Let them give 2 impressions per picture. Allot 2 minutes for presentation per
group.

o Discussion Part
Explicit Information/ Claim
 Explicit information is any idea that is stated.
 With explicit information, you see the text explained!
 Since you are looking for explicit information in what is read, the explicit information will be written
in the text. There is no need to look for clues. Just read. If the information is written it is explicit.
Example:
1. All living things are made up of cells. Since humans are alive, we are also made of cells. Cells make
our body tissue. Tissue makes our body organs. Organs make our body systems. Cells are the building
blocks of our bodies.
Here are 2 explicit questions to answer:
1. What are made of cells?
2. What is the main idea of the article?
Implicit Information/ Claim
 Implicit information is understood but it is not stated. To find implicit information in what is read,
you will have to think about what you read. Look for clues as you read.
 Implicit information is not written. But the idea is there. Implicit information is using what is read to
make an inference.
 Inferences
 An inference is a statement about the unknown made based on what we know. It is an
assumption we make where something that is believed to be true based on something else.
 Inferences = evidence from text + background knowledge
 Inferences drawn while reading are much like inferences drawn in everyday life.
 Inference = NOUN. A conclusion.
 Infer – VERB. The act of drawing a conclusion.

HOW TO MAKE AN INFERENCE
1. Read the text and find a clue.
2. Analyze the clues - “reading between the lines” strategy.
3. Decide what inference (what conclusion) is justified based on text.

Example:
1. All living things are made up of cells. Since humans are alive, we are also made of cells. Cells make
our body tissue. Tissue makes our body organs. Organs make our body systems. Cells are the building
blocks of our bodies.
Here are 2 implicit (inferential) questions to answer:
1. How do you know that birds are made up of cells?
2. What will happen to the body if cells are destroyed?

C. ABSTRACTION
Ask students to differentiate explicit information/claim and implicit information/claim based on their own
understanding.
D. APPLICATION
Identify the explicit and implicit information/ claim from the given selection.
1. The alarm rang. Beth jumped out of the bed. As she passed her brother’s door, she saw him still fast asleep.
She shouted at him to wake up or he would be late again.
2. One day, in a small town a magician was showing many tricks. Everyone laughed and clapped loudly. He then
placed his hat to the ground and the people threw pieces of coins in it.

IV. EVALUATION
Identify the explicit information and the implicit information as based on the image.
