What is Metadata?

means “an underlying definition or description” in technology circles.
The Exchangeable Image Format or EXIF is a descriptive data (meta-data) in an image file that
include the date the photo was taken, resolution, shutter speed, focal length and other camera settings.

Lesson 8: Acquire Images from other Sources
Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
- Scan images correctly;
- Recognize and respect copyright laws relating to creating and using photographs; and
- Differentiate image file formats.
From Scanning
A scanner is an input device that scans documents such as photographs and pages of text. When a

document that can be viewed and edited on a computer.
A flatbed scanner is an optical scanner which makes use of a flat surface for scanning documents.

works; designs; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

you to use without permission. Works in the public domain are those whose intellectual property rights

1. Bitmap (.bmp)
BMP or Bitmap Image File is a format developed by
Microsoft for Windows. There is no compression or
information loss with BMP files which allow images to
have very high quality, but also very large file sizes. Due to
BMP being a proprietary format, it is generally
recommended to use TIFF files.
3. GIF (.gif)
GIF or Graphics Interchange Format files are widely used for web graphics,
because they are limited to only 256 colors, can allow for transparency, and can
be animated. GIF files are typically small is size and are very portable.
4. PNG (.png)
PNG or Portable Network Graphics files are a lossless image format originally
designed to improve upon and replace the gif format. PNG files are able to
handle up to 16 million colors, unlike the 256 colors supported by GIF.
