Course/Year/Section: BSCE-2H Score:

Directions: Answer the following.

1. Discuss the important role of science education in the development of the country.
We all know that science and technology plays a vital role in the development of a country, so science education
as well. Science education serves as a foundation for someone to excel in the subject of science and technology.
Improving the sector of science education will result in more individual that are competent and capable of thinking
critically, finding the best solutions for problems in real life situation and capable of innovating, inventing things out of
what they learned. In sum, a better development of the overall aspect of a country can take place.

2. As a student, what problems have you experienced in Philippine Science Education? What solution/s can you
recommend to address these problems?
During my days in elementary and high school, I think I encountered a lot of problems in terms of dealing with
science education. One of these problems I experienced is that the essence of teaching and studying science at these levels
of education is not clearly defined by teachers to the students and is not being considered, I think. The purpose of teaching
science is to create a competitive individual that is capable of reasoning and thinking critically and capable of solving real
life problems, so that more individuals can give contribution to the overall development of the society. During my
childhood, I thought science was boring because of the way of teaching that the teacher used was more on, first,
memorizing terms that I didn’t really understand during that time and second, note-taking and copying very long lectures
but lacked in engaging activities and real life applications. I literally questioned the role of studying science. Another
problem I encountered was lack of resources such as quality textbooks, qualified science teachers and scientific
apparatuses. This problem regarding the lack of resources leads to poor quality of teaching. Students are expected to
understand the lessons at the end of their courses but how can it be possible if the educators themselves did not able to
fully understand the subject they are teaching.
Solving these problems require a lot of time, first is to provide more qualified science teachers but to do this
teachers of today needs to encourage more students to be interested in the science subject so that there will be more
possibility that more students will pursue science related courses. If that thing happens more individuals will be able to
participate in developing the country giving a way for science education to grow bigger.

3. If you were given a chance to talk with the President of your university, what aspects of science education would
you suggest to change? Why?
Nothing really, because it is not my problem. A large number of information is now in the fingertips of everyone. All
we need to do is to make use of all this available resources for our own advantage. I am only pursuing college for
certification. I am not saying that college has nothing to do in a way of expanding my knowledge and experiences,
because it really has something to do with it. The only thing is that I am already satisfied about what they can provide.

4. How do you differentiate the science courses in high school under K-12 Curriculum and the science courses
before its implementation?
The only thing I noticed is: before a student will spend the whole school year learning a single branch of science
and after the implementation of the new curriculum, the students are now taking multiple branch of science in a school
year, one branch each quarter or the spiral progression approach.
