h2 − h1 1145.187 − 970.05

COPactual = 0.55 × 3.72 = 2.048

Problem 2 A R-12 refrigerating machine works on vapor compression cycle. The temperature of refrigerant
in the evaporator is -20℃. The vapor is dry saturated when it enters the compressor and leaves it in a
superheated condition. The condenser temperature is 30℃. Assuming specific heat at constant pressure for
R-12 in the superheated condition as 1.884 kJ/kg K, determine
COP of the machine.
Solution
T2′ = T3 = 300C = 30+273 = 303K
T1 = T4 = - 200C = -20 + 273 = 253 K
Cp = 1.884 kJ/kg K

From R-12 refrigeration table

Enthalpy at 2
h2 = hg2 + C𝑝 (T2 − T2 ′ )

h1 − h4 342.682 − 228.540
COP = = = 4.08
h2 − h1 370.687 − 342.682
COP = 4.08

Problem 3 A vapour compression plant using R-12 operates between 35℃ condensing temperature and -
5℃ vaporisation temperature with saturated temperature leaving the evaporator. The plant consists of twin
cylinder, single acting compressor with 100mm diameter and 120 mm stroke running at 300 RPM. The
volumetric efficiency is 85% and the mechanical efficiency is 90%. Assuming isentropic compression.
Determine i)COP ii) Power required iii) Tonnage capacity of plant.
