Subject/Grade: Science/ 2/3 Lesson/Date: Nov.

Stage 1: Desired Results

Lesson In this lesson students will learn through an experiment what the word condensation means.
Overview: Students will make their own hypothesis on what will happen to water when it is boiled and
then they will watch a kettle boil and be able to see the steam that will come out of it. After
this, the teacher will put a cold spoon in the steam to show students how condensation works.
Students will then draw pictures of their findings and write down their answers for two
conclusion questions.
GOs: Students will: learn about the nature of liquids and the interactions of liquids with other
materials.
SOs: Students will:
Students will:
1. Recognize and describe characteristics of liquids:
 recognize and describe liquid evaporation

Learning Students will:

Objectives  Make a hypothesis on what happens when water is heated
 Demonstrate an understanding that water evaporates when it is heated
 Demonstrate an understanding that water boils at 100 degrees Celsius
 Demonstrate an understanding that steam can return back to its water state when the
temperature is cooled.

Stage 2: Assessment Evidence

Assessment Assessment

Stage 3: Learning Experience

Prior to  Have kettle filled with water Resources:  Science workbooks
Lesson: and plugged in  Water
 Have spoon in freezer  Kettle
 Frozen spoon

Introduction:
2:30- Review of Previous Concepts/New Learning:
2:35  Discuss what some big science words have been that we’ve been
learning about (density, viscosity, hypothesis, surface tension)
 Introduce our new big word “Evaporation” ask for predictions on
what evaporation means

2:35- Transition: Have everyone come close to the desk (but being extra careful
2:37 because its hot)
Body:
2:37- Direct Instruction: Hypothesis and Definitions Formative
2:50  Explain what evaporation does, and that we’re going to get to see assessment can be

 Have everyone make a hypothesis on what is going to happen to the of the lesson to see
water when it is heated and write it down on their worksheets (Set who remembers the

wrong because it’s an educated guess last lesson.

2:50- Transition: Have students move to around desk, ensuring that everyone is
2:52 extremely cautious.
2:52- Learning Activity: Run Experiment
3:10  Have they kettle start boiling, ask students to make observations on
what is happening to the water on the inside of the kettle and what
is coming out of the kettle. Explain to students that the water is
boiling and that this only happens once water reaches a certain
temperature and that temperature sis 100.
 Take frozen spoon and hold it above the steam. Have students
notice the water droplets that are forming. Explain that this happens
because it’s the hot steam meeting up with the cold spoon and this
leads to condensation
 Have students return to their desks and draw what just happened
during the experiment
3:10- Transition: Have video ready to show
3:12
3:12- Learning Activity: Worksheet Conclusions Formative
3:23  Show students video (show the first minute and then skip ahead to Assessment: can be
the 5:00 mark to show the water boiling) done by looking at

 Explain again that for the water to get to this boiling point it has to to make sure that
reach 100 everyone is
 Have students write the conclusion for “What happens to water at following along and
100 degrees?” (Give students a timer to finish the first question and has a grasp on the
then repeat for the second one new topics.
 At the last question ask students to recall what happened with the Differentiation:
spoon. Explain that steam can turn back into water, but it must cool Writing the answers

students who are
struggling.
3:23- Transition: Have students bring their attention to the front

Consolidation:
3:25- Review of Key Concepts/Point to Next Class:
3:30  Review the big science word of the day “evaporation”
 Review other big science words that we’ve been learning about
 Review what temperature it is that water boils at
