It was brought to our attention that we had a typo in the Nine Points email address.  In our effort to ensure
an ongoing conversation with our readers, here is the publication with the corrected address.  If you have
sent any communication to Nine Points in the last 24 hours it may not have arrived; please resend any such

Editorial
Welcome to the spring edition of Nine Points. As I sit here in England
overlooking the Lancashire hills I can just about make out some daffodils; it
has been a hard winter here and spring has felt a long time coming. This time
of year always feels like the real beginning to the year to me, and it is in that
frame of mind that I approach this exciting new task.

My name is Peter McNab, I am a Self‐Preservation Three, and I have the
privilege and honour to be the new editor of Nine Points. It has been quite
daunting launching this latest edition from scratch but I have been
overwhelmed by the support and generosity of the people I have approached for contributions;
many thanks to all of them.

Vision
From my vantage point high up in the hills and a long way from anyone else who has even
heard of the Enneagram, I have been thinking a lot about how I'd like to see Nine Points
develop. It seems to me that although we are a community, we are a community that is
scattered across the globe, and for that reason I see Nine Points as one of our main vehicles for
keeping in touch with one another, learning from one another, helping one another. There is a

lot of diversity within our community, which I always see as a great strength, by the way, but
there is even more that connects us. I'd like Nine Point s to help with all of these.

Of course, the other way in which we maintain our community is through the Conference. Last
month we held our Board Meeting at the hotel in Fort Lauderdale where the conference will be
held in July. It was wonderful to be in the warmth of Florida overlooking the Atlantic from the
opposite side and I can't wait to be there again in July. The conference organisers have really
pulled the stops out and there is a fantastic line‐up of presenters this year, the best of the
established teachers and a whole host of people making their debuts. I think it promises to be a
wonderful event so I'd suggest that you book your flights soon.

I've got lots of ideas abut how we can go forward but I also genuinely hope and pray that you
will also contribute to this dialogue: what do you want to contribute to the community? What
would you like to gain from the community?

Here are some of my ideas:

Themed Issues
As we are incredibly busy, I'd like to give people a lot more notice about the sorts of
contributions that we shall be asking for and I thought that Themed Issues might help with that
and also focus our minds on how we are using the Enneagram. Some of the themes I'd like to
suggest are The Enneagram and:
v Spirituality
v Organisations
v Coaching
v Levels of Development
v Families & Children
v Careers
v Innovation & Creativity
v Learning, Teaching & Training
v Health
v Sub‐Types

The next themed issue, which I am hoping to
bring out in June 2011, will be The Enneagram &
Spirituality. The issue following that one will be The Enneagram & Organisations. I'll let you
know about future themes in the next edition but would love to hear your suggestions.

Global Perspectives on Type
As a British Self‐Pres Three, it has often struck me that there are some very
specific cultural differences with the Enneagram, the main one for me is that
American Enneagram teachers and colleagues think that I have mistyped myself
because I am very different from American Threes. This was something that I
talked about a lot with European Threes at the Enneagram Conference in Denmark last year. It
seems to be a common theme and so I'd love to hear from anyone from around the globe on
their own experiences of Type within their own cultures.

This does also help Mario and I in developing the first IEA publication, Views on Type. We are

http://campaign.r20.constantcontact.com/...p2zScgrJyZTa_r4EX-vOIS9M-AwyPhkImLyIvEQuomV8NmdN3aYMqb2sCfeVVFu40Q%3D%3D[20/04/2011 13:12:16]

editing a book containing only the views of the types themselves and are still looking for more
contributions.

Sharing Exercises
As a trainer I am always creating and developing exercises around Type and would be happy to
share some of the more successful ones that I have used and was wondering if others would
like to contribute to this. In the spirit of sharing, I'll be including an exercise that I call The
Stones Exercise in the issue on The Enneagram & Organisations, that helps to get corporate
types into their emotions and sharing in the shortest amount of time that I know.

The Media
The Enneagram is being mentioned increasingly in the media but I often miss it. I thought it
would be really useful to all of us if we could share anything that we notice and I can spread this
to the membership. I find it a really good convincer for people; if it's in the news it must be
good. The reference to Eye Movement Patterns in the Hollywood movie, The Negotiator, helps
me to overcome obstacles when teaching NLP.

Movie & TV Reviews
References to movies and TV always bring workshops alive and I'd like to
invite you to share your favourite characters and why you think they might
be a certain Type.

What would you like to see in Nine Points?
Please get in touch and let's get the dialogue going.

President's Address
The five inches of snow I returned to in Philadelphia did not diminish the
warm feelings with which I left the IEA Colombia conference in Cali last
weekend. More than 200 people gathered to hear speakers from seven
countries give talks on their use of the Enneagram, and the enthusiasm of
the audience attending Colombia's first international event was both
infectious and inspiring.

In addition to Colombia, I've had the great pleasure since June to attend
Enneagram conferences in Spain, Denmark, and the 2010 International
Conference in San Francisco. The conferences represent what I love best
about the International Enneagram Association: People from across the globe coming together
in a strong sense of community to learn from each other and share their experiences with and
knowledge of the Enneagram. The conferences have allowed me to meet interesting and
accomplished people that I would have never met otherwise; through our shared experience in

Translations at the Conference
For the first time ever, we shall be offering simultaneous translation in to Spanish at several of
our sessions this year. We'll have more details about this in the next issue.

Introducing
As someone who presents fairly regularly at conferences, I know that one of the biggest fears is
that no one will turn up to your session, particularly if you are presenting for the first time and
no one knows who you are. As ever, our presenters will be travelling from across the globe to
be with us and at their own expense, and I'd like to thank them in advance for making the 2011
IEA Conference such a great success. I thought I'd also help them out by inviting them to
introduce themselves to us. What has fascinated me has been the ways in which they have
responded to the invitation and how, not just the content, but also the style in which they have
chosen to introduce themselves, or not, reflects Type. I have found this really useful in deciding
which presentations I will be going to:

Arthur Kranz
Catalina Rico
Dixie Land Holton & Martha Land Young
Jaime Larraine
Jeff Lyons
Joan Mitchell
Luis Miguel Valderrama Ochoa
Patt Lind‐Kyle
Renee Rosario & Leslie Hershberger
Ruth Shell
Susan Olesek
Zitta de Fries

If anyone else would like the opportunity to introduce themselves to the membership and
ensure that the most appropriate people attend their sessions, please get your copy to me by
the end of June 2011.

Articles
We have two very different articles for you in this issue and, as you would expect, they offer us
very different aspects of the Enneagram and should stimulate lots of discussion. If you would
like to respond, you can, of course, write directly to the author, or start a dialogue on these
pages.

In the latest edition of Enneagram Monthly, our President, Mario Sikora responded to an open
letter to our organisation by setting out his ideas for the future and how the current Board is
working towards achieving these aims. I thought that the membership would like to read this
letter and the editor of Enneagram Monthly kindly gave his permission for us to reproduce it.  If
you have any comments or feedback please send to me at ninepoints@internationalenneagram.org .

Thanks to these conferences, the IEA is well on its way to

becoming what it has envisioned itself to be since its inception: a
global learning community of people working to increase their
understanding of themselves and their compassion toward others.

The conferences are not the sole focus of the IEA, of course.
Earlier this month the IEA board of directors held its semi-annual Conference Recordings
meeting in Ft Lauderdale (site of the 2011 International Conference)
to plan our initiatives for the year. At a high-level, the board is
focused on three major areas:
· Supporting a global Enneagram learning community;
· Providing effective governance practices for the 19
(and growing) country affiliates; and
· Promoting awareness of the Enneagram.

http://www.internationalenneagram.org/home/Message_from_the_President.html[20/04/2011 13:12:30]
Message from the President - International Enneagram Association

Fitzsimons (Secretario, Alemania), Gail Barber (Tesorera, USA),
Isabel Salama (España), Lynda Roberts (USA), Deni Tato (USA),
Susanne Povelsen (Dinamarca), y Peter Mc Nab (Reino Unido);

Eneagrama sea ampliamente comprendido y constructivamente
utilizado.

SINTESIS EJECUTIVA
CONGRESO INTERNACIONAL DE AUTO
CONOCIMIENTO, DESARROLLO HUMANO Y LIDERAZGO

conferencistas, panelistas, expositores, participantes e invitados
especiales.

My hypothesis is that there is a Hidden Path in the Gurdjieff

advertisement segments on this path. The first segment represents a journey of
self knowledge, to know they self in all the three triads. This first
stage of the work is represented by the central triangle in the

that are different from your own style. This second stage of the
work is represented by the hexagon in the Enneagram. The third
segment of the work is to realize that you and the other are One

Traditionally, writers and storytellers familiar with the Enneagram

Enneagram typing and breaking down characters within stories by
core styles, wings, subtypes, etc. This is not new news; enneagram
practitioners who are also writers and/or storytellers have been
using the Enneagram to develop characters for novels, plays, and

that traditional Enneagram approaches cannot stand alone in

The Enneagram-Story Bridge™ is such a methodology. Beyond

until years later that I put into perspective the conversion of
advertisement Essence into the development of personality that begins in early
infancy.

As a gestalt therapist I first encountered the Enneagram nearly forty

years ago in a course given by a friend at the Gestalt Institute of
Toronto and I instantly fell in love. My lifelong insatiable curiosity
about the human mind and behavior was the incentive that made
me want to learn all I could about this marvelous new tool that so
neatly categorized human motivational thought and behavior. The
concept of addictive ways of being, ways of seeing things from a
limited and predictive position, fit in very well with my work as a
therapist, making it easier and quicker to begin work with clients.

However it was the spiritual aspect of the Enneagram as a
universal symbol that has kept me enthralled over the years
wanting to put everything new I learned into a context that would fit
within the Enneagram symbol. Reading Ken Wilber’s Spectrum of
Consciousness back in the eighties was another pivotal moment in
my spiritual awakening especially as I discovered that the Spectrum
fit around the Enneagram with amazing meaning. It also occurred
to me at this time that the natural evolution of man in general, as

our soul nature.

Later, in reading the following quote from Kabir Helminski’s book

Living Presence, ‘The qualities latent within our own Essence are
Divine Attributes. It is because the Divine Compassion exists to
reveal itself to us that there exists the possibility of knowing the

place where we must start, but it is only the beginning of the journey

which means guise, façade, front, and so we must go beyond the
façade to discover our true nature and purpose, our Essence.

Since personality is where we reside and what we know, it was Knowing others is wisdom

In this IEA conference seminar ‘Divine Aspects of Consciousness’, I will

introduce the nine aspects, (which I call the essential elements of
consciousness emanating from Divine Love), they being, Luminosity,
Compassion, Integrity, Creative Life Force, Discernment, Truth, Joy, Will
and Serenity. And while like personality we encompass aspects of all
types, you will discover the Divine Aspect you are meant most to
embody. You may be surprised!

For those of you who do not know me, I partnered with others in
developing the 1999 IEA conference in Toronto and was president of
Enneagram North, an Ontario chapter of IEA for five years.

Along with my Gestalt therapy practice, I have developed and led

numerous seminars, workshops and retreats built around the
Enneagram, the spectrum of consciousness and evolution, spiritual
precepts from various traditions and meditation over forty years of
helping individuals to come to ‘know thyself’ at the deepest levels of
understanding. I am currently working on a book entitled The Essential

All the information and experience received during my personal life,

information from adults that reaches our subconscious and stay

related to adult life. If we don’t discover them and work towards

Yet, this is easier said than done. In our work with our students

facilitate practices which help them relax into Presence and allow

Many years ago Flemming invited me to join him in teaching a

expressing themselves through the body. There is only one success
- to be able to spend your
“How am I going to do that?” I thought (I had not yet met Andrea :- life in your own way. -
)). “The only way I know how - I will ask a lot of questions and Christopher Morley
observe people - just like when I prepare for creating a play, a
show or a musical”. But I did not have a manuscript – so I had to
make my own.

I interviewed all the types, and many different people with the same
type :-), about how the theory expresses itself through them. I
asked them to describe situations in real life; how the reactions, or
actions, look like, feel like, and what they are thinking, what words
are they using, what kind of props do they use, etc.

The questions I asked are what an actor would have to ask the
creative team, before they start rehearsing a character - to become
the character.

I also asked how they moved their body in the situations, how they
used the room, how they sat down, where in the room they liked to
be, how their body acts or reacts when they are around other
people, friends, colleagues, husband/wife, children and what tempo
they have in different situations.

My manuscript became the Enneagram, the knowledge of the

types, together with all the answers and my own observations.

As an actor you can work from the inside out – or from the outside
in.

In the workshop “The Enneagram – LIVE!” I chose to work from the

outside and in.

http://www.internationalenneagram.org/home/Zitta_de_Fries.html[20/04/2011 13:15:55]
Zitta de Fries - International Enneagram Association

I set up different real life situations that the type sometimes finds
herself/himself in - it could be a situation where you are alone or
with one or more people - then I direct and choreograph you to
move in the "correct" way with the "right" intention. I give you direct
feedback and correct your body language and keep you in our
knowledge of the type. I give you things to think about and I give
you the words the type would have inside of them, and you say the
same words to yourself. All that put together will give the same
energy in you, as it would in the type we are looking into.

But it will only happen if you give yourself a chance to let go of any
judgment toward the character/the type and yourself and stay in the
situation with empathy and curiosity - only then you will get a strong
sense of the type.

You will also experience how the talent is "working" in your own
life. Are you using this talent or is it often shut down in you or do
you suppress it or do you not listen to it, is it something you hate in
you or do you judge yourself when you have this energy, these
thoughts or feelings or … ?

Our body is lot like an old record where the pickup is stock in the
same vein, now you can stop yourself and remove the pickup and
you can move in another way, and get a new perspective.

I love to dance - and we will dance - to get in touch with the inner
body and we will put feelings and images into the movement and
maybe some thinking and vision into it or not.

In the workshop in Fort Lauderdale – we will have time to

investigate 2 or 3 types together.

And after that I hope we will meet again in another “rehearsal room”
and explore more about life.

was truly innovative, and important, and would, with an appropriate
level of authentic participation among participants, revolutionize the
way members of our Kentucky public school district’s leadership

We became school district administrators at the same time; Gary

having been promoted from a school principal position in the same
district, and Tom coming from a role with the Kentucky State
Department of Education. There were elements of our new jobs in
which we reveled; however, there were also those that repelled us
both in different ways. Gary would balk at the polychronic nature
of some colleagues’ views of time; Tom would internally (and
occasionally externally) retreat after lengthy meetings filled with Conference Recordings
what he viewed as inauthentic interactions. With each other,
communication was transparent. It seemed that upon meeting we
knew how to bolster and motivate each other, but we also quickly
reached a point where honesty was valued over any well-
intentioned, but ultimately false or shallow, praise for a “job well
done.” Any workplace would surely benefit from the kind of
synergistic communication and teamwork that resulted from our
partnership. But we recognized that asking our colleagues to

inappropriate.

While considering all of this, Gary recalled a “personality-typing”

tool that he and his wife had used during marriage preparation
sessions. We delved into the model in the hopes that it would
illuminate our behaviors and reactions to workplace situations, and
also ways toward better versions of ourselves. Reminding Gary of
his “One-ness,” and assisting Tom with understanding personality
traits common to the Four that he soon understood he was, the
Enneagram did both.

At the same time, Tom was seeking a resource for one of his BUY NOW!

books abounded, but Tom’s interest in the Enneagram was taking
precedence and informing the rest of his work, his doctoral studies
being no exception. Ginger Lapid-Bogda’s Bringing out the Best in
Yourself at Work became Tom’s book of choice for his doctoral
work that semester, and it soon became just the impetus we
needed for what would become a major district leadership initiative.

urban systems. However, we feel the goals are universal to any - Anthony de Mello
public school district – or even organization – and that this
communication and training model can be differentiated to meet
varying needs.

Proposal and Goals

As with any initiative, we began with a proposal to our

superintendent. We wanted to demonstrate how engaging in an
Enneagram study would result in our articulated ultimate goal:
higher-performing leadership teams. In our school district, the
word “teams” held contextual meanings depending upon members
of the gathered group. One team was comprised of members of
central office administrators. Other teams included school-level
administrators (e.g., principal, assistant principal, curriculum
specialists). Still another team was the synthesis of the two
aforementioned teams into one, and it was this latter team on which
we focused initial efforts.

The main problem with communication within and among the team
members was that it was predominantly one-sided.
Communicators knew how to speak, but the listening component
necessary to make communication authentically whole was
oftentimes missing or lacking. A speaker formulating his or her
next words masqueraded as listening. Additionally, this one-sided
communication was planned, inflexible, and too often manipulative.
In the spirit of the honest communication we wanted to foster, we
articulated this to our superintendent. He agreed to allow an
introductory session during our summer leadership retreat.

Procedure

Initially, Gary and Tom purchased Riso-Hudson Enneagram Type

Indicator (RHETI) licenses from the Enneagram Institute for all of
the leadership team retreat participants. Each participant took the
assessment before the retreat began and sent their results to Gary
and Tom. At the same time, we purchased copies of Lapid-
Bogda’s book for each team member with which we would utilize a
book study approach. We wanted to have an initial idea of the
range of personality types represented before beginning simply for
planning purposes and for the time allotted. This approach had
obvious aforementioned advantages, but one disadvantage for
which we had not planned was the apparent mistyping and
resulting over-identification with type of one our team members. In
our more recent work with small groups we have allowed
participants time to reflect on each type and then pair that reflection
with Lapid-Bogda’s Enneagram Typing Cards followed by a
supplementary administration of the RHETI. The results have
appeared more conclusive. See Table 1 for a representation of
initially-identified types.

We then immersed participants in a one-and-a-half-day Enneagram

study during which they learned the very basic history of the model,
its immergence as a personality-typing model and the key points of
each type, drawing heavily on The Wisdom of the Enneagram, by
Riso and Hudson. Utilizing characteristics of highly-effective
professional development for adult learners, we allowed for a
combination of direct instruction, individual reflection, small group,
and whole group learning.

Once participants had a general knowledge of the whole model,

and a working knowledge of their individual types, we led them
through the “How Each Type Communicates” chapter in Lapid-
Bogda’s book. We watched in delighted awe as work-like partners
(officemates, or principals and curriculum specialists) shared
powerful, honest dialogue and revelations with one another. Of
course, as with any group learning, some participants fully engaged
in the work, while others complied at a surface level. All team
members participated during this and subsequent follow-up
session, although some would truly use the knowledge gained to
inform their work throughout the school year, during which we
followed up in monthly leadership team meetings with either another
chapter study from Lapid-Bogda’s work or with tools that we
developed ourselves. Throughout that school year we also typed
guidance counselors and classroom teachers to aid them in
informing elements of their work, and the next school year Tom
introduced Enneagram studies to students in two high school
classes of Advance Placement Psychology.

Reflection on Results and Next Steps

While we have since left our positions with this school district we
both continue working with the Enneagram, separately in our new
duties and collaboratively for conference presentations and in
private consulting. We both contend, too, that this is the most
important work in which we have ever engaged for at least two
reasons. First, because it changed the way people saw each
other, and mostly for the better. We tempered our communication
and interactions with each other with the knowledge of both who we
were and who we were striving to be. And second, because it
changed how we saw ourselves and made many of us individually
strive for healthy growth and development in an office culture
where such had never before existed. One school curriculum
specialist articulated it as follows to Tom on his last day in this
school district: “That (Enneagram study) didn’t just change how I
worked, it changed my life.”

May the authentic engagement in Enneagram study continue to

transform us in our schools, in our offices, in our homes … in our
lives.

among the nymphs, for whom he showed no interest. One nymph,

rudely rejected. In her sham and grief, she perished, fading away,
leaving behind only her responsive voice. The Gods, in deciding to
grant the nymphs’ wish for revenge, contrived that Narcissus would
also experience the feelings of an unreciprocated love. One day,
looking into a clear mountain pool, Narcissus espied his own image
and immediately fell in love, thinking that he was looking at a
beautiful water spirit. Unable to tear himself away from this mirror
image, and unable to evoke a response from the reflection, which
disappeared every time he attempted to embrace it, he gradually
pined away and died. (1986)

Healthy narcissism is the ability to love yourself and to regard
yourself positively. It is critical for the development of self-esteem.
Narcissistic manifestations are displayed in varied ways across the
life cycle and across cultures and need to be evaluated in context
before being deemed pathological. For example, we might be
properly delighted when a three-year old spontaneously stands
before a group and begins to sing and dance. On the other hand
a thirty-year old performing at every opportunity to get attention and
admiration might be considered a bit exhibitionistic and grandiose.

Individuals with excessive narcissism have difficulty maintaining

a realistic concept of their own self-worth. On the one hand they
have an inflated and grandiose sense of self-importance. On the
other hand, they may experience a profound sense of
worthlessness and propensity toward shame. Their grandiose
fantasies of magnificent achievements and their posture of
superiority over and contempt for others are compensatory
defenses to cover their feelings of unlovableness and vulnerability.

People struggling with narcissistic issues have an excessive

need to attain outside support for their self-esteem. Other people
function to inflate and shore up the narcissist’s esteem. This
inability to provide an inner support leads to a self-centeredness
and arrogance that obscures a subjective experience of emptiness,
inferiority, and shame. The experience of shame is different from
that of guilt, which reflects the belief that one has committed a
wrongdoing. Shame is the experience of being exposed as not
good enough or weak or small. With guilt the inner voice is within
the self (the superego); with shame, the audience is outside the

self. You are losing to the competition and everyone can see it.

Narcissistic individuals have relationships with others that are

often superficial and shallow, lack emotional depth, and are not
mutual. They may have little capacity for empathy, can be
insensitive to others’ needs, and are exploitative in their behavior.
Remorse and gratitude are frequently absent from their response
repertoire. They may seek out associations with individuals whom
they perceive as perfect, basking in the glory of their intelligence,
success, or fame. This is what Heinz Kohut meant by “idealizing”
the other in relationships. Or they may search for admirers who
can gratify their need for affirmation. Kohut described this as
seeking “mirroring.” Relationships become organized around the
person’s needs for attention, with little acknowledgment that others
may have needs and interests markedly different from their own.

Psychodynamically oriented theorists have offered their opinions

about the etiology of narcissism. Freud, whose drive model has us
pushed from within by sexual and aggressive impulses, attributed
narcissistic problems to a withdrawal of libido from the outer world
into the ego. The individual retreats from attachments to others to
a state of self-absorption. This may be caused by trauma or by
frustrations in relationships with others. He thought an infant
normally evolves from a stage of autoeroticism or self-love to a love
for others.

Heinz Kohut, whose interpersonal model has us influenced by

our caretakers, thought about pathology in terms of environmental
deficits, provisions that were lacking as we were growing up. If our
early relationships didn’t provide us with adequate mirroring or
someone to look up to or someone to feel similar to, then we lack
the validation, admiration, and modeling necessary for the
development of healthy self-esteem. We then become vulnerable
to feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy and turn to others for
affirmation. When we receive adequate mirroring, idealizing, and
twinning, then the natural grandiose omnipotence of the two-year
old eventually gets toned down to the healthy self-respect and self-
efficacy of the twenty-year old.

Which Enneagram Styles Are Narcissistic?

Relying on Theodore Millon’s description of the narcissistic

personality, Claudio Naranjo (1994) refers to Enneastyle Seven as
the narcissist.

According to Millon (1981), narcissism conveys a calm and self-

assured quality in social behavior. The narcissist’s seemingly
untroubled and self-satisfied air is viewed by some as a sign of
confident equanimity. For others these behaviors reflect immodesty,
presumptuousness, pretentiousness, and a haughty, snobbish,
cocksure, and arrogant way of relating to people.

Narcissists are cognitively expansive and place few limits on

either their fantasies or rationalizations. Their imagination is left to
run free of the constraints of reality or the views of others. Or as a
Seven recently said: “I’ve never felt constrained by logic.”
Narcissists experience a pervasive sense of well being in their
everyday life, of buoyancy of mood and an optimism of outlook.
Their affect, though based often on their semi-grandiose distortion
of reality, is generally relaxed if not cheerful and carefree. Should
the balloon burst, however, there is a rapid turn to either an edgy

irritability and annoyance with others (a trip over to the downside of

the One Enneastyle) or to repeated bouts of dejection that are
characterized by feeling humiliated and empty (a visit to the
downside of the Five Enneastyle.)

Many of these characterizations of narcissism fit the Seven

Style.

Naranjo also attributes some narcissistic tendencies to

Enneastyle Three which he labels the “Marketing Personality,” using
the typology of Erich Fromm. In his presentation of the Three,
Naranjo quotes Karen Horney’s description of the narcissist:

“I take (narcissism) here in its original descriptive sense of being

in love with one’s idealized image. More precisely the person is
his idealized self and seems to adore it. This basic attitude gives
him the buoyancy or the resiliency entirely lacking in other groups.
It gives him a seeming abundance of self-confidence….He has no
(conscious) doubt; he is the anointed, the man of destiny, the
prophet, the great giver, the benefactor of mankind. All of this
contains a grain of truth. He often is gifted beyond average, with
early and easily-won distinctions, and sometimes was the favored
and admired child. This unquestioned belief in his greatness and
uniqueness is the key to understanding him. His buoyancy and
perennial youthfulness stem from this source. So does his often-
fascinating charm. Yet clearly, his gifts notwithstanding, he stands
on precarious ground. He may speak incessantly of his exploits or
of his wonderful qualities and needs endless confirmation of his
estimate of himself in the form of admiration and devotion. His
feeling of mastery lies in his conviction that there is nothing he
cannot do and no one he cannot win.” (1991)

These descriptions certainly resonate with some characteristics

of the Three.

What Are Some Conclusions?

So which Enneagram style is the narcissist? The Seven? The

Three? Both? Neither? Or can any Enneagram style be
narcissistic? I think it depends on whether you consider narcissism
from a developmental perspective or from a characterological
perspective. Although, this is probably a false dichotomy since
character and development interact.

If you think of narcissism as developing around ages 3-4 in the

late rapprochement-early object constancy stage (using Margaret
Mahler’s object-relations timeline) or even earlier as Kohut
suggests, then narcissism is a defensive life-style that might be
deployed by any Enneagram style since we all had those same
needs in our early years and anyone’s development may have been
arrested at that time. So Sevens and Threes wouldn’t have any
exclusive claims on this disorder. They just might manifest it in
their characteristic ways.

If you think of narcissism as a characterological issue, then

certain genetic or temperamental dispositions might have lead to a
narcissistic solution (7,3) to one’s developmental vicissitudes as
opposed to a schizoid solution (5) or an aggressive solution (8) or a
depressive solution (4), or a paranoid solution (6), or a histrionic
solution (2) or a dependent solution (9) or an obsessive-compulsive
solution (1). All of these solutions are found in the DSM-IV-TR’s

http://www.internationalenneagram.org/home/Wagner_Article.html[20/04/2011 13:16:55]
Narcissism and Enneagram Styles - International Enneagram Association

section on Axis II Personality Disorders.

Object-relations theorists would remind us that these disorders likely
originate during particular periods of our developmental journey.

I think there are enough varying theories about the etiology and
portrayal of narcissism that you could probably argue for any
position you’d like. The Enneagram theory developed without the
assistance of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual and the DSM
didn’t know about the Enneagram types when it was formulated.
So any compatibilities and overlap between the two systems may
lie as much in the mind of the correlator as in the individuals being
diagnosed.

My slightly skeptical stance also suspects that any research

would only confirm the paradigm of the researcher. Any measures
of narcissism would be based on the test constructor’s theory of
narcissism just as Enneagram assessments are based on the
premises of Enneagram inventory constructors. So given the
somewhat subjective status of our knowledge of narcissism and the
Enneagram, I would be cautious and humble about declaring who’s
a narcissist and who isn’t. My own narcissism inclines me to
believe, of course, that this conclusion is the correct one.

Second, I’d like to address a couple of specific issues in Carl’s
advertisement
email: the annual conference and the idea of a Center for
Enneagram Studies. I’d also like to take this opportunity to let the
community know the direction the IEA is taking toward the future
and some of the initiatives that will help us get there.

The heart of Carl’s letter was his belief that we should not hold the
conference every year. He stated in his letter that once he came to
that conclusion he went in search of evidence to support it; I’d like
to give the rationale for why I disagree.

The short answer to why the IEA holds the International Conference
every year is because it is what our members want, and they

than we’ve seen in many years. The conference committee has
made great strides to select a diverse selection of topics and
presenters, and this year 16 “new voices” will be presenting, many
of whom are from outside the US. Yes, to Carl’s point, the
conference is an opportunity for teachers to promote their programs

hand exposure to the different teachers before deciding where to
invest their valuable time and money in deeper training.

The conference organizers also try to include programs that are

aimed at both beginner and advanced levels of understanding, so,
yes, some of the programs might not seem particularly ground-
breaking to advanced Enneagram students. But many of the people
at any given conference may be attending only their first or second

Finally, for many the conference is about more than the content—it BUY NOW!

The deeper issue that Carl raises, it seems to me, is: What is the

IEA doing besides the conference and what could it do if it wasn’t all your heart to give

and energy consuming, but is hardly the sole focus of the
organization. The recently developed strategic plan for the IEA has
identified three broad areas of focus:

v Supporting a global Enneagram learning community;

v Providing effective governance practices for the 19 (and
growing) country affiliates; and
v Promoting awareness of the Enneagram.

Specific initiatives include upgrading the website and “Nine Points

Magazine,” producing the 2011 “Enneagram Journal,” establishing a
publishing imprint, and improving the accreditation program.

As I’ve talked to members and affiliate heads around the world over
the past year or so about the IEA’s future, one word comes up
more than any other: “research.” The IEA does not have the
resources or requisite skills for conducting research but we are
forming a research task group to aggregate research, put
researchers in touch with each other, and educate people about the
research being done in the field. So if you are doing research or
know of someone who is, please let us know. We may be some
distance yet from having the capacity to form an International
Center for Enneagram Studies as Carl suggests, but this could be
a step in that direction.

The members of the IEA board of directors are all volunteers who
dedicate time and energy to doing what they can to move the
community closer to the IEA’s stated vision: a world where the
