Exercise 2.

Pair Essay
Instructions: Watch the video Typhoon Haiyan: Eye of the Storm on YouTube
(https://www.youtube.com/ watch? v=-BnahLg_LG_DmQ). Then, with a partner, write a
reaction essay on the documentary using the following questions. Limit your essay to 300-
500 words.
1. What are the impacts of climate change on meteorological patterns?

2. What pieces of evidence are presented that proves or reinforces the connection
between climate change and the changing meteorological patterns?

3. How did the documentary affect your personal beliefs and actions toward protecting
the environment?

It is universally agreed upon that for an effect to take place, there was a cause that took before
it, such as the case with climate change and its underlying impacts on meteorological events
like storms. In November 7th 2013, Typhoon Haiyan (also known as Typhoon Yolanda) struck
the Philippines and was the deadliest typhoon in the country’s history. Typhoon Haiyan caused
major and severe damages to Tacloban where over thousands lost their lives, about 4.1 million
people were left displaced from their homes, and 6 million workers were left without any way
or means to support their family and livelihood. And it just so happens to be this, one of the
most dangerous typhoons ever recorded, was caused by none other than climate change.
Many have thought that climate change had no effect on meteorological patterns and
effects, but this simply is not the case. It was found out that the rise of global temperature had
a relation to the changes in weather pattern. This means that a warmer atmosphere can hold
more moisture, therefore adding more moisture for storm systems, resulting in heavier rainfall.
Experts agree that climate change warms the waters of oceans, adding energy that can fuel
storms leading to the rise of sea levels. The rising of sea levels is also caused by the melting of
glaciers and warming of the oceans which evidently were attributed to climate change. Further,
Jeff Weber from an Atmospheric Research department claims that Typhoon Haiyan was formed
over the warmest waters on the planet. If climate change continues to produce more intense
heat waves, sea levels will continue to rise and in the next decades, deadlier storms are
expected to afflict the lands. The shocking part about these extreme weather events and shift
of weather patterns is that they are more likely to become intense and frequent with human-
induced climate change.
After watching this documentary, we were alarmed of how serious the damage of
climate change is. Climate change is caused by the excessive use of greenhouse gases. It is even
more expanded by companies in the gas and oil industry – the major contributors of climate
change. We realized that, as consumers, we do not show interest in stopping this which
encourages the big companies to continue releasing fossil fuels in the air. We are partly at fault
for the damage caused by the super typhoons. If we remain neutral to the damaging acts
against climate, then we also remain as the oppressor.
It has shifted our personal views on just how meaningful protecting the environment is.
Humanity and nature have a mutual relationship where one benefits from one another if given
positive action but also destroy each other when done negatively. Frankly we do not have the
power to retrieve what is now lost, we cannot undo the past but we can make the future. We
can protect the environment even with little by little progress and it all starts with us, humanity.
