What is Acceleration?

Introduction: The final quantity we will investigate in one-dimensional motion is acceleration. Acceleration
is often a quantity that individuals use incorrectly. Sports announcers will occasionally say that an athlete is
accelerating if that athlete is moving fast. Yet, acceleration has nothing to do with moving fast. A person
can be moving very fast & still not be accelerating. Acceleration has to do with changing how an object
moves. If an object is not changing its velocity, then the object is not accelerating. Before we continue,
let’s recap what we have explored so far:

o one-dimensional motion- motion along a single, straight path

o position- an object’s location
o motion- a change in position
o distance- the length between 2 things, a scalar
o displacement- a change in position, dependent on direction, a vector
o speed- the rate of change of distance, a scalar
o velocity- the rate of change of displacement, a vector
