HR Management Midterm
FALL 2020-2021
Dear Students,
Please read the following information about the midterm exam rules very carefully.
CASE 1
REST MOTORS, which is a big car dealer, is a very successful company with a Leading
Service Award. There are departments such as customer relations, service department and,
sales department in the company. The problems that have occurred in recent times reveal the
danger of losing the prize they have, and this will lead to many problems in their business
process.
The company had a lot of problems in recent years and the biggest problems have occurred in
service department. Gray, head of the service department; has been working in Rest Motors
for 10 years and defines himself as someone who creates a pleasant, cooperative and team
based atmosphere. However, problems that caused fall back in award criteria is mostly related
to this department. Gray was talking with Tim who is Human Resources Manager and said
"It's very hard to find a good employee; I lost another employee today and I might have to let
someone out next week. " Tim has recently been working with Gray to improve the
recruitment process. Despite the increase in the number of qualified candidates, expectations
from technological developments and customer service cause problems in the hiring process.
Gray is one who develops his own method of interviewing and define himself as very good at
understanding people. His recruitment philosophy is "hire people for attitude; train them for
their skills ". Gray said he hired James a year ago; have worked very well until recently, but
James has recently changed his attitude and performance. James's performance has
deteriorated, he has problems in collaborative work and has negative mood mostly. James's
behavior is causing conflicts in the service department. Gray said he tried to talk to James, but
he argued with him and quit job today. Tim asked to Gray, "Who do you think will quit in
your department next week," Gray responded "Amber, who has recently caused financial loss
and made a lot of mistakes". Gray: "I do not think she can work with this workload, actually,
we worked very well for a while, but now it is not working." Tim checked the recruitment
files of Amber and James, and realized both of their references were not checked. Gray "Both
were very good in job interviews; I hired two of the best people, talked about everything from
their social activities to their hobbies. "
Tim asked Gray to tell what he asked in the job interviews. Gray said he did not remember
and did not take notes either. Gray said that now that he does not want to deal with these
things, he has to hire someone instead of the employees who quit the job. Tim said, "Let's not
hurry up for a moment, first, we have to get through the recruitment process."
1. What kind of mistakes does Gray make during the recruitment & selection process? If
you are in Gray and Tim's position, what kind of selection plan do you make for Rest
Motors? What stages will you include? How will you organize interview process and
what kind of questions will you include?
2. If you were in the position of Tim, how did you prepare a training program for the
managers like Gray? What type of training techniques would you include in the
program? What would be the goals and objectives of this training and development
program? How did you conduct the needs analysis and the training evaluation process
and what will be criteria for these processes?
