ASSIGNMENT TITLE: Principles of Management Assignment 1

Management skills can be defined as certain attributes or abilities that an executive

should possess in order to fulfill specific tasks in an organization. They include the capacity
to perform executive duties in an organization while avoiding crisis situations and promptly
solving problems when they occur. Management skills can be developed through learning
and practical experience as a manager. The skills help the manager to relate with their fellow
co-workers and know how to deal well with their subordinates, which allows for the easy
flow of activities in the organization. To become a successful manager, you must master
many skills. To get an entry-level position, you must be technically competent to perform the
required tasks. Management skills are important for leading teams and driving organizations
in the right direction. To be a good manager, it is important to have skills such as technical
competence, good communication skills, decision-making skills, leadership skills, problem-
solving skills, time management, conceptual skills, human skills, motivation and Leadership
skills, etc. Managers with good management skills are one of the pillars of the organization
and have the ability to lead the company to success. In order to be successful in planning,
organizing, leading, and controlling, managers must use a wide variety of skills. The four
main type of managerial skill that I want to explain are conceptual skills, human skills,
technical skills and decision-making skills.

Page 4 BMT 1023 Individual Assignment

The first skills that I want to explain is conceptual skills. Conceptual skills are the
abilities that allow an individual to better understand complex scenarios and develop creative
solutions. From a management perspective, these skills are valuable because those who have
them can approach complicated workplace situations in a variety of different ways. No
matter what industry your company operates in, it will face challenges that require innovative
and creative ways of thinking. In these situations, conceptual skills are the most beneficial to
the organization. A conceptual leader can think through their ideas, transforming thoughts
into action-driven solutions. People see leaders with conceptual skills as strategic leaders
because of their ability to strategize about potential situations and how to resolve them. At
higher levels of management, the ability to approach a situation with a creative and abstract
approach is highly valuable, so developing conceptual skills can be beneficial if you want to
progress in a career as a manager. Apart from that, I think this skills is more important for top
manager because the managers at the top, who are responsible for deciding what’s good for
the organization from the broadest perspective, rely on conceptual skills which have the
ability to reason abstractly and analyze complex situations. Senior executives are often called
on to “think outside the box” to arrive at creative solutions to complex, sometimes
ambiguous problems. They need both strong analytical abilities and strong creative talents.

Next, the second skills that I want to explain is human skills, human skills present a
manager’s knowledge and ability to work with people. One of the most critical management
tasks is to work with people. Without people, there will not be a need for the existence of
management and managers. These skills will enable managers to become leaders and
motivate employees for better accomplishments. Also, they will help them to make more
effective use of human potential in the company. Simply, they are the essential skills for
managers. Top managers have the most choice in how they exercise any of these skills
because of their position in the hierarchy. They rely most on conceptual skills because they
need to understand the big picture and build connections between abstract ideas in order to
make strategic plans. At this level, they also need significant human skills to manage
relationships among their peers, with competitors, with partners and suppliers, and with high-
level stakeholders, like the board of directors. But the human skills are the most needed by
middle managers. They must share information and ideas up, down, and across the
organization in order to achieve their aims. They also use conceptual skills to set and adjust
goals to facilitate strategic objectives. Clearly, they require more technical skill than the
managers above them because they need to understand the work of those they supervise.

Moreover, the third skills that I would like to explain is technical skills. Technical skills
include skills that enable managers to have the ability and knowledge to use various
techniques to achieve their goals. These skills involve not only the operation of machines and
software, production tools and equipment parts, but also the skills needed to promote sales,
design different types of products and services, and promote services and products. Technical
skills can refer to the ability to perform certain tools whether tangible or intangible, as well
as the skills required to master their intended use in various situations. In this regard,
knowledge of technical skills is considered practical in nature because it allows individuals to
complete specified tasks in a real-world rather than theoretical manner. Given the growth of
technology in the global and local economies, the demand for diversified technical skills and
knowledge may continue to grow in the foreseeable future. To obtain advanced technical
skills, specific education or training is required, usually requiring hands-on learning and
many advanced topic elements. Lists the technical skills requirements of most occupational
fields, the most concentrated areas are those involving science, technology, engineering,
computing and mathematics. These skills are especially important for lower level managers,
as they are often responsible for training their team members. Lower level managers must
have technical skills, otherwise they will not be able to perform all their duties. Lower level
managers directly supervise the work of their direct reports and are responsible for their work
from a technical perspective. If we do not have technical skills within the scope of the
directly reported job, then we cannot supervise their work.

Lastly, the last skills that I want to explain is decision-making skills. Decision-making is

critical to building a successful business. Business leaders need to make the right decisions
and have firm beliefs. Fortunately, decision-making is a skill that can be learned and
strengthened. This guide teaches you how to make better decisions and provides you with a
range of skills that can become stronger managers and leaders. And I think this skill is
important for all level of managers which are top managers, middle managers and lower level
managers. Managers at all levels must make decisions on behalf of the company. The
difference between the various levels of decision-making lies in the range of choices made.
The long-term decisions that affect the entire company belong to the top management, while
the decisions that affect daily operations belong to the lowest management. All decisions are
directly or indirectly related to broader management functions: planning, organization,
leadership, staffing and control. Different management levels spend more time on certain
functions than others. Last but not the least, the person in the position of power who made
the decision should themselves be able to stick to the decision once made no matter what.
In conclusion, all businesses must have the foundation of management skills to be
successful in the long-term in a corporate society. If these extremely important skills are not
used, all businesses will be adversely affected by the loss of income and eventually end up
closing the business. These skills that managers need to implement which include technical
skills, human skills, conceptual skills and decision-making skills. Small businesses such as
businessmen and family businesses usually do not have enough people to deal with the
implementation of these skills for various reasons, but this can be changed by a few steps,
thereby increasing the life of small businesses and positive results in business.
