COLUMNS

Dianne Mae M. Magomnang

Columns

• Is a long, slender member that carries an

axial compressive load that fails due to
bulking.

• At bulking the load will not reduce, the

column collapse.
• This must be avoid
What if the column buckle and didn’t
collapse?
• What’s on the column?

• Modulus of Elasticity of the materials

• What if the column is loaded
“ECCENTRICALLY”?
3 FORMS OF COLUMNS (end forms)

1. Pinned-end Column- is guided so that the

end cannot sway from side to side.
2. Fixed-end Column- against the rotation at
the support.
3. Free-end Column- ex. flagpole
Effective Length

• The manner to support of both ends of the

column.
Le= KL
End Fixity

• Ends of column are supported.

Radius of Gyration

• The tendency for a column to buckle is

dependent on the shape and the
dimensions of its cross section, along
with it length and to the adjacent
members or support.

Slender Ratio

• The ratio of Effective length of the column

to its least radius of gyration.

Example 1

1. A column has a solid circular cross

section, 1.25 inches in diameter; it has a
length of 4.50ft and pinned at both ends. If it
is made from AISI 1020 cold-drawn steel,
what would be a safe column loading?
Example 2

2. Determine the critical load on a steel

having a rectangular cross section, 12mm
by 18mm and a length of 280mm. It is
proposed to use AISI 1040 hot-rolled steel.
The lower end of the column is inserted into
a close-fitting socket and is welded securely.
The upper end is pinned.
