5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are through with it.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this module, do not
hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always bear in mind that you are not
alone.

We hope that through this material, you will experience meaningful learning
and gain deep understanding of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master simple techniques in separating mixtures. The scope of this module permits
it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the
diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

This module deals with the simple techniques in separating mixtures.

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. identify the various separation techniques such as distillation and
chromatography; and
2. describe the various separation techniques such as distillation and
chromatography.

What I Know

3
This first part of the module is a pre-assessment activity that allows your
teacher to determine your strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills on the
different separation techniques prior to the lesson’s discussion. So, sit back and read
each question comprehensively and choose the most suitable answer by selecting the
letter inside the box. Write the chosen letter on a separate sheet of paper and submit
a copy of it to your subject teacher. Be one of the students who practice the virtue of
HONESTY.

a. Distillation c. Chromatography

b. Crystallization d. Evaporation

1. This method is used for purifying miscible liquids.

2. This is the process of separating components of mixture based on

different boiling points.

3. This method is used for separating the colored components in mixtures

and identifying the substances in the mixtures.

4. The process of getting water from salt solution refers to ____________.

5. The process of checking the presence of drugs in urine or pesticides and

herbicides in vegetables refers to __________.

What’s In

Separation techniques are those techniques that can be used to separate two
different states of matter such as liquid and solid.

Now, answer the following questions below scientifically and write your answer
on separate sheet of paper and submit a copy of it to your subject teacher.

1. What is the purpose of distillation process?

____________________________________________________________

2. While conducting paper chromatography, you observed that the chemicals

travelled upwards in different amount. Give the reason why chemicals
travelled upwards in different amount.

Note the Teachers

The teacher must consider the prerequisite skills needed in
the development of this competency including the schema or
background knowledge which may reinforce learning. This
module will help the learners bridge the gap of learning to attain
mastery of the lesson in its spiral progression.

What is New

A separation process or technique is a method that converts a mixture or

solution of chemical substances into two or more distinct product mixtures. At least
one of results of the separation is enriched in one or more of the source mixture’s

5
constituents. In some cases, a separation may fully divide the mixture into pure
constituents. Separations exploit differences in chemical properties or physical
properties (such as size, shape, mass, density, or chemical affinity) between the
constituents of a mixture.

Processes and techniques are often classified according to the particular

differences they use to achieve separation. If no single difference can be used to
accomplish a desired separation, multiple operations can often be combined to
achieve the desired end.
Salt dissolved in water. What method would you use to separate this
mixture so that you can get the salt and the water?

What is It

The separation of mixtures into their components may be done using the
following processes:
Distillation is the separation of mixtures through the continuous cycle of
evaporation and condensation of the volatile components of the mixture, which have
different boiling points. Below is the illustration of the process.

A mixture alcohol and water may be separated because the two components
have different boiling points. Through distillation, drinking water can also be
recovered from an aqueous salt solution like sea water.

Chromatography is a simple but efficient technique used to separate and

identify the components of mixtures. A mixture is dissolved in the fluid mobile phase,
which percolates through the material called stationary phase. The components of
the mixtures separate as they travel at different speeds toward the phase for which
they have an affinity. An example of a mixture that can be separated by
chromatography is the black ink of a white board marker. The different colors used
6
to prepare the ink separate depending on the affinity of the colored ink. Below is the
illustration of the process

Other separation techniques include evaporation, crystallization,

magnetization, scooping, decantation, filtration, solvent extraction,
amalgamation, and cyanidation.

What’s More
