Design Brief

Our group came up with the idea to design a low budget go kart. It will cost less than if you buy your traditional
go kart that can run you around ten thousand to twenty thousand. For this project, our group will source parts that
we find laying around a mechanic shop and our homes. Taking this plan into consideration, it will reduce the
overall cost of the go kart tremendously. In planning, we decided that we needed to source a seat, different
lengths of steel, a motor, steering wheel and a braking system. Each one of our group members possess a certain
skill set that also helped influenced our decision to build to go cart. One of us is a skilled welder who would
ensure that the project is made with the best quality. The rest of the group members are skilled in mechanic work
and very artistic. All of these attributes will result in a reduction in the cost and a fully functional kart for our
enjoyment.

1.0 Performance (e.g. speed, power)

 The top speed should be around 30-40 KM/h.

 The handling of the go kart will be able to take corners at high speed without
breaking traction.
 It will have wide tires so the power of the go kart can be used effectively

2.0 Weight and size

 The curb weight should be around 200- 300 lbs
 The length and width of the go kart will approximately be 78 inches long and 52
inches wide.

3.0 Target cost

 The target cost will be in between 5-6 thousand
 The target cost may vary because we have most of the parts and material already

4.0 Appearance, finish

 For this is go kart we are going for a matte black finish
 The colour of the rims will also be black.
 It will have a redox base coat to prevent rusting
5.0 Ergonomic issues
 The seat in this kart is going to be very light and made of fibre glass material. It is
going to be attached to the chassis by four points and can be adjusted to the driver’s
comfort. The seat implemented in our go kart provides a good combination of weight
reduction and ergonomics.

6.0 Life expectancy of the product

 Based on the material and prep work of the go kart the redox base coat will increase
the life expectancy.
 The go kart will be stored in an enclosed location so it won’t get damaged by the
weather

7.0 Safety
 The chassis will be reinforced to handle any situation
 A seat belt will be implemented for any sudden stops.
 The cart will not be in use while under maintenance

8.0 Maintenance that may be available to the product.

 The oil will be changed every 6 months to prevent engine failure
 The brakes will be changed every year
 The tires will be changed every year
