3. What happens at the end of the story? Is it a happy ending? Why or why not?
At the end of the story, Stanley is feeling quite sad because he is tired of being flat. Arthur re-
turns Stanley to his original shape using an old bicycle pump. The Lambchops celebrate with
hot
chocolate. The ending is a happy one because Stanley is happy to be back to normal.
The main problem of the story is that the main character, Stanley, is flat. At first, it seems that
Stanley’s new shape is a good thing, because he is able to help others and do things he
couldn’t do when he was round. Eventually, though, Stanley becomes tired of being flat and
is teased by others because of his shape. This makes Stanley very unhappy. The problem is
solved by his younger brother, Arthur, when he comes up with the clever idea to use a bicycle
pump to return Stanley to his old shape.
